Keepitsimple Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 There have been many articles, accusations and innuendos about the importance of Afghanistan as it relates to a pipeline for oil......and that America's thirst for oil is driving the war. There is a gross misconception that the US is reliant on "Middle East" oil. In fact, the US produces about 40% of it's oil domestically. Of the 60% that is imported, only about 20% comes from the Middle East - far less than 15% of total consumption. I don't doubt that there are greedy commercial interests in the Middle East but the actual need for oil from that area is relatively small - and shrinking as conservation and alternative sources take hold. There are also large reserves - recently expanded - in the Gulf of Mexico. Alaska is another growing source. And of course, Canada - by far the biggest supplier of oil to the US - could provide more. eyeball Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I don't doubt that there are greedy commercial interests in the Middle East but the actual need for oil from that area is relatively small - What about the US's need to control or deny other countries from accessing the flow of oil or gas from the region? In some people's minds these stakes are probably even higher than their own domestic needs. Quote I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical criminal

eyeball Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 So...you're saying there's never been any need to keep ME oil from falling into communist hands? If you say so. Perhaps Argus could do a better job of straightening you out on that one. Quote I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical criminal
bush_cheney2004 Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 So...you're saying there's never been any need to keep ME oil from falling into communist hands? Nope......even Japan and Canada gets some. Continued access to supply is far more important. Quote Economics trumps Virtue.

GostHacked Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 So...China? China would be one of them. Take the oil and then sell it back to China/Russia ect and make large cash on it. Win win?? Quote
Topaz Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I believe oil was the is part of it but the greater part is the World Order. These people behind this, needs a powerful military to do it and so this is were the US comes in. The Middle -East needs to be captured and controlled and the Middle-East is fighting for their own freedoms. US has spent One Billion dollars embassy in Iraq, the US miltary is there to stay and it will be the same in Afghanistan. Quote
DogOnPorch Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 China would be one of them. Take the oil and then sell it back to China/Russia ect and make large cash on it. Win win?? So the US plans to prevent oil flowing to China? How are they going to do that? Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.
eyeball Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 The relationship between Afghanistan and oil and with most of the turmoil in the region has its roots in the Cold War. Oil was clearly a vital strategic resource and in any war securing a supply of it is only marginally more important than denying it to the enemy. But now there's never been any need to keep ME oil from falling into communist hands? Who'd have thunk it? Quote I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical criminal
DogOnPorch Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 But China already gets oil from the Middle-East. Does the US plan to torpedo some tankers? Quote Nothing cracks a turtle like Leon Uris.

Oleg Bach Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 That's just great! We lose billions in tax payers money for military supplies - we lose a couple of hundred fine young people - cripple another thousand - and in the end it's still guys like Dick Cheney sucking the life out of us..with Harper assisting in sticking in the draining tube...Yah Great - we "sacrafice" lives so some rich f**ks can keep living like gods on earth - and we like twits salute coffins like dreamers on the Highway Of Heros...boy are we ever a bunch of delluded fools...it was always about oil - military contracts and f**king dope...If it was my dead son or daughter being sent back in a body bag I would not salute - I would be full of rage and righteous indignation where no "anger management" course would quell my thirst for revenge... BUT - I am not involved in that shit - and no offspring of mine will every be sacraficed to the oil god... Quote
Wilber Posted September 8, 2009 Report Posted September 8, 2009 China would be one of them. Take the oil and then sell it back to China/Russia ect and make large cash on it. Win win?? Japan and South Korea are the largest importers of Middle East oil. Not sure exactly what it is but at last count, Russia is a net exporter of oil and is no longer a communist country. eyeball Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 So just to make sure we're all on the same page here, the confluence of oil and communists in the region surrounding the ME have never had anything to do with the west's reasons for interfering there...ever? Astounding. Quote I said now watch what you say they'll be calling you a radical, a liberal, oh fanatical criminal
