Why do American Christians approve of torture?

Churchgoers more likely to back torture, survey finds

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The more often Americans go to church, the more likely they are to support the torture of suspected terrorists, according to a new analysis.

More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent — said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is “often” or “sometimes” justified. Only 42 percent of people who “seldom or never” go to services agreed, according the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

White evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified — more than 6 in 10 supported it. People unaffiliated with any religious organization were least likely to back it. Only 4 in 10 of them did.

There are no Christians left in America. Just as there is not a single one to be found in the Vatican either. Only deviates that are sexually and spiritually ill accept torture as a normalacy. Christianity is socialism though free will - the socialism forming in America is forced and coerced...taxing is a forced process - granting is done out of good consciousness and free will.

Why do folks in the middle east approve of cutting off of heads?

Your question shows how tall you stand - can you see over the top of that tire rut? Or would you like a rock or two to stand on?

How enlightening.

I am relieved that you and your thoughts are in the minority.

Show me proof that those funamentalist and tradtional Catholics keep the Christian doctrine and contract in tact? The movement originally in part was to sell your property and put the money in a common purse...and those that were in need were free to take when in need from the common wealth.. Look at the history and breach of contract by the Vatican for instance - they took the money and then did NOT disperse it..they simply kept the bulk..I would say that is a breach and they can not be called Christians...look at the right wing Bushites - killing in the name of God ...and the lunitic Muslims who are no better who assume the all mighty is weak and in need of help to kill...I really can not take them seriously - can you?

I am not interested in providing you with anything. You started this and I simply commented on your thoughts.

Why would I waste my time debating with you?

You know I don't debate. You also know I like to make declarations..and I know you are a bit overly institutionalized and as arrogant as myself in these regards - It would be like debating yourself or your mirror image...You represent what you have learned from a book and I represent what I have come up with on my own - so I see your point - why burst your bubble and why burst mine...do you wear a tweed jacket with leather patches on the elbows? Good morning my friend...have another coffee.

LOL!

Nice to see I am pigeon holed

I wear body armour and carry an automatic weapon - just so you can sit in your smug and self satisfied ivory tower and pontificate to the world.

Real coffee?

Would love one - but I will stick with the Arabic stuff for now.

My tweed jacket is back home in the closet and the family run the various businesses until I return - I get rich on your back - and pay far too much tax so your cheque does not bounce after the government sends it to you.

So spend that welfare cheque any time you can - at one of the family owned businesses if can - and I would bet you have - it helps reduce the over all tax burden - but tell your ex wife to keep you out of her bed - she would probably be far better off for it. And deep down you would probably agree.

My very best regards

Hey you cowboy...listen - I have been out of the system for over ten years- I don't pay anyone unless it is though sin taxes..and I do not have an ivory tower - it's more like a tree stand for hunting miserable rats..I have no money - I am an old guitar player and an artist - what ever you are doing - be confident and get back safe - yes my dad was a military man - a bit of it rubbed off on me..and no - I infiltrated the hippies but was never really one of them...as for the governmental subisdy --- I earned a bit of cash - preparing a home for an American consultant..did I declare it? The X wife was disloyal and a liar who wanted to be me and expect me to make her rich - I am no ones slave or singing bird...Borg - there is far more to me than what I present...think of me as a very creative operative - Like father like son...we all serve in our own way - and I love the welfare thing - makes me look like a losser...

Why do people make trolling threads and then act holier than thou? Why don't you define what torture is, and then the word is.

From his signing statement ratifying the UN Convention on Torture from 1984:

"The United States participated actively and effectively in the negotiation of the Convention . It marks a significant step in the development during this century of international measures against torture and other inhuman treatment or punishment. Ratification of the Convention by the United States will clearly express United States opposition to torture, an abhorrent practice unfortunately still prevalent in the world today.

The core provisions of the Convention establish a regime for international cooperation in the criminal prosecution of torturers relying on so-called 'universal jurisdiction.' Each State Party is required either to prosecute torturers who are found in its territory or to extradite them to other countries for prosecution."

reagan was such a pussy, leftwing, socialist, jihad loving, unchristian, communist, towel head!

Turn on the news: Torture in Abu Graib!! You're an American and you're a piece of sh*t!! Hey, if you're going to tell me I'm an American and I'm a piece of sh*t because I torture people...when you finally show me the pictures...it better not look like something I did in college.

Yeah you do need to if you want to be taken seriously. Otherwise you would be not aware of the debate that the US is presently having over whether non-violent, non-painful practices such as waterboarding and music constitute torture(BTW, they use waterboarding on American citizens training in the forces). And being that you are not aware of this you are simply trolling. Hint, if you don't want to get banned, at least make an attempt to cloak your trolling efforts, calling Reagan by school yard names is a little to obvious.

Anyway, your whole argument is bankrupt since American Christians disagree on torture just like they do abortion and gay marriage and many other topics.

Got anything worth talking about?

I approve of torture, im a christian, Ill pay for my own sins. No man can decide whether or not im christian or not. Thats between me and god. Ive done alot of wrong things in my life. And when it comes down to it what we do to protect are selves or our families often overrides are sense of righteousness. Its called survival. Its called protecting the things that matter to us.

there are the minority american christians who are against torture. not only because they ask themselves, "WWJD", but also because they know it's illegal.

The former Bush/Cheney administration and its apologists in the media continue to claim that it is an open question as to whether “waterboarding” (immobilizing a person, pouring water over his/her face and breathing passages, suffocating him/her and leading him/her to believe he/she will die) is torture and forbidden in U.S. law. The question is ridiculous.

* Waterboarding (as it is now called) is one of the oldest known forms of torture. In the 1500s it was used in the Spanish Inquisition.

* In 1898, an American soldier (Captain Edwin F. Glenn) used the technique (then called the “water cure”) on a prisoner captured in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War. When reported, Americans were shocked and protests led to Elihu Root, U.S. Secretary of War (now called Secretary of Defense) ordered Glenn court-martialed in 1902 and imprisoned. A general under whose command this and other tortures occurred was court-martialed and removed from the army.

* During WWII, both the Gestapo and some Japanese soldiers used waterboarding as a form of torture. The Japanese were tried after the war and at least one hung by U.S. forces for waterboarding U.S. Airman Chase J. Nielsen.

* Waterboarding was declared illegal by U.S. generals during the Vietnam War. When a journalist photgraphed an American soldier helping two South Vietnamese soldiers waterboard a captured North Vietnames soldier, and published in the Washington Post in 1968, it caused outrage across the United States. The soldier was court-martialed and dishonorably discharged from the U.S. army.

* In 1983, Texas sheriff James Parker was sentenced to ten years in prison and his deputies to four years apiece for waterboarding prisoners. When his case came up for clemency years later, then Gov. George W. Bush refused to pardon Sheriff Parker, specifically stating that no one is above the law.

i'm sure there is a person across the world saying something similar:

i approve of terrorist attacks, i'm a muslim, i'll pay for my own sins. no man decide whether or not i'm muslim or not. that's between me and god." Ive done alot of wrong things in my life. And when it comes down to it what we do to protect are selves or our families often overrides are sense of righteousness. Its called survival. Its called protecting the things that matter to us.
