Should we Spend or Save the Surplus?
GostHacked replied to SamStranger's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't want them to cut the GST. It did help us get out of a recession. Why not just keep going with that? National Debt. And there really is no surplus to speak of. If the National Debt still exists then we really have no surplus. Surplus in terms of money left over from the budget, but any normal family would rather put that extra money on the mortgage of their house or other debts and or invest it somehow. So they do not really see that money for long. Same thing with Canada replacing the family home. We all live in this same house and we all must pay for the house. I say keep the money for now, and if it requires spending then consider it, otherwise throw it to the national debt, because overall there is no surplus. -
Iran elected Vice-Chair of UN Disarmament Commission

...which have yet to show Iran is developing nuclear weapons. Thus Iran is not yet in violation of the NPT. If that is the case. what are they in violation of then? -
You can use notepage to tidy up your responses before you post. I have had to do that on some occasions. It also helps with other forums I visit. Notepad is your friend. But not wordpad or word. Clippy is maddning.

http://www.edmontonsun.com/News/Canada/200...557811-sun.html I thought they had urban warfare centers in the US and other places to train the troops in saftey without disrupting the public, and without compromising the security and saftey of the citizens of that city. Not very comfortable with troops and guns (with blanks) and 'pyrotechnics' to simulate what it would be like overseas in an undisclosed location in 2008 09. I am glad Winnipeg is just like cities in this undisclosed area. It might be cool to watch and see your military walk around the streets acting like they are in the middle of the war. Even US troops are taking place in this training. Would there be other foreign troops taking place as well? it does not say. We should not be using our own cities as training grounds for this. We have centers set up for that and also, many run down or semi abandoned old cities and towns to get this done. In Creighton Ontarion (Near Sudbury) there is noone living there. The town was abanoned some years ago when the mine shut down. This place would be PERFECT for this training, and it would not disrupt city life in ANY WAY. Any of you in Winnipeg witness this event? Tell me your stories!

U.S. to release 1/3 of Gitmo detainees
GostHacked replied to Black Dog's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
geoffrey Not sure if they will look at the US in a kind way. For one, being an innocent, taken out of your country where you live (in some cases I would guess) shipped off to another country half way around the world, away from his family ect, and held for over 3 years without a charge brought against them and no trial. Then all of a sudden. 'Yeah you can go". Personally I would be raging and wanting to kill americans. You think a few dollars is going to remedy things? If so, how much money would it take for these people to be happy and let it all slide? Now it looks like the US is going with the mantra 'Guilty till proven innocent'. I think I used to see this in the former Soviet Union. -

Seems like Bush is ignoring laws when it is in his best interest. http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washingt...ndreds_of_laws/ I could not read the rest of the article past page two. Needs a sub. http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti.../604300462/1012 But I suppose those who support Bush are not really concerned about this at all.

Hehehe AT&T NSA Update 3. http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews....ECURITY-ATT.xml Now that AT&T is tied into everything and even the military at this poing (an assumtption on my part). And this does not seem to concern people at all. I think this is absolutely frightning. Legal or not. Warrented or not. This is a bad road to go down if the case is dismissed. This means they can tap anything and everything.

Why not? Movies like Schildler's List or Black Hawk Down depict real events and are based on the experiences of real people. Why is it okay to watch a slightly dramatized version of real life, but not something that tells the real story of real people? It seems like such an arbitray distinction to make. Films aren't all mindless entertainment, ya know. They remain a powerful medium for telling stories. i think your characterization of this film as a "dramatic moneymaker" is misguided. BD, it's Hollywood. Manking money is their thing. Making a great movie comes in second most of the time.

By your logic I can blame the incident at 3 Mile Island on the Cold War. That was in 1979. There is problems with nuclear technology. Stuff happens, and FAST if it is not under control. I doubt the Cold War had anything really to do with it. By your logic, many other Russian nuclear reactors should have failed. So this is why other countries cannot pursue nuclear technology? Because they have great risks invovled? Something at Chernobyl went wrong, just plain wrong, as with 3 Mile Island, and every other nuclear power plant disaster in history. I just cannot beleive I read your response. Little concern for citizens( or soldiers) in the Nevada desert when the US was testing nuclear weapons. I wanted to turn this into a memorial on what happened, and you really just.. ..... .. wow.

20 years ago today there was a nuclear power plant disaster that forever changed the world and to a greater extend a part of the Ukraine and Belarus that will not see human habitation on a large scale for centuries to come. http://todayspictures.slate.com/inmotion/essay_chernobyl/ http://www.pixelpress.org/chernobyl/ These two websites are amazing, if you do not feel a tear comming up then I doubt you are even human. Do you remember what you were doing and where you were that day? I was 14, watching TV on a saturday afternoon watching TV and the news came on with a breaking story. Yeah I was scared, and I am on the other side of the planet. I could not quite understand all that was going on, but I knew nuclear radiation is a very very serious and deadly thing. Radiation like that scares me alot. It goes everywhere. I pour one out and send my hopes and best wishes to those who are suffering to this day. Young children who did not witness the event that were born after the tragedy are suffering greatly with all sorts of cancers and other deseises running through their bodies and the air and the ground, every where around them. Let's hope we never have another Chernobyl. Let's hope we never are made to witness any nuclear tragedy again.

Here is some more information on wiretapping and how it can be used. An article over at The Inquirer says : So this NSA Wiretapping is not just for suspected international terrorists anymore, they are spying on the local American population for piracy. Wake up people, this will get worse, more news is going to come out on this. In my searching for NSA related articles I came across a few interesting things. Over at The Political Gateway it has been lerned that a tried terrorist will now go free because of the illegal wiretapping. Here is something over at Media Matters with a Fox "My Opinion" piece. Kind of scary. Watch that video please and tell me this does not alarm you. WTF ??? Well if the Americans do not like what the president is doing, they have every right to wage a 'war' on Bush. Get him out of office. Regardless of his claims that the wiretapping program leak hurt the security of the Nation and tipped off Al-Queda. Bush works for America, not the other way around. The reason why it was leaked? My guess is that some important people felt that the American population should know what their governent is doing. Not okay for it to be leaked, but ok for warrentless wiretappings by your own government. Another article here at The Jurist This should send up some red flags among you.

Lowering the flag for slain soldiers?
GostHacked replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Are you suggesting that the rights of Canadian citizens out wiegh the rights of the family. And again at what piont do we say we've seen enough...You want to honour these men then show them and thier families your support..And if you think that you are doing that by watching the funeral on TV or reading an article in the paper your wrong. And your joking right, about the media, honour has nothing to do with it, it's all about viewers and selling copies, nothing more. I believe that the government has been asked by one of the families to limit the press and cerimonies. As long as it is at the family's request then I can accept that. It should always be up to them if they want media invovled or not, this is not a thing for the government to decide, it is for the surviving people of the fallen soldier. This debate is stupid and we should just leave all those decisions with the family. OTOH, they are Canadian soldiers and should be honoured by all of Canada, they gave their life for this country, we owe them the respect. Give them a moment of silence, think about them. If you want to honour the troops, do just that. -

U.S. to release 1/3 of Gitmo detainees
GostHacked replied to Black Dog's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
It took them this long to figure it out? Here's the real kicker, though: if these guys didn't hate America before, what do you suppose they think now? UGH logins, I shall find the article. BUT anyways, yes I agree. This should create some hate for the US. Also where are they going to be sent? Will this be rendition en masse? -
Show me on map where the palestinians had a state /country prior to Israel occuping thier lands. or for that matter show me anything that proves there is a palestinian country before 67 when Israel took those lands in combat... And prior to the Israelis capturing said lands whose flag was flying over that territory. Who did israel take the territory from.? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine

Lowering the flag for slain soldiers?
GostHacked replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That's my point. Though I'll go even further: Afghanistan is not a war in the sense of being a force to force conflict, but neither is it a true counterinsurgency. There's not yet the kind or organization or sophistication in the "enemy" for this to be considered more than a glorifed policing operation, albeit one over a large, unstable area. If this was a war, we'd have Canadians coming home in bags every day. There is no longer a 'war' in Afghanistan. It is more of a nation building/peace enforcers. The war was over years ago. They have a parliment and a new government, we are no longer AT WAR with Afghanistan, if we were actually at war with them in the first place. Canada (through I guess the guise that is NATO) is controlling the security in Afghanistan at the moment. The US still overall runs the show in Afghanistan with the puppet Karzai in place. The war you all refer to is the War on Terrorism. And this is a US thing, not a Canadian thing. IF Canada truely beleived in the war on terrorism, we would have went balls out in Iraq, but we did not. Also the War on Terrorism is perpetual and never ending. It is designed to be open ended. Now I had a feeling that our soldiers would get more coverage in the press ever since Harper said he supported the troops. Now I see more ads on TV for the Canadian Military (with american style commercials) we see more coverage on TV for the troops in the news, papers, net. Harper is really looking like Bush in his actions and rhetoric. -
They had their own state/country. Now they are restricted to little strips of land. Eventually they will have nothing (if this trend continues)

The US has and still is providing funding to most midle east countries for sometime now. As for them pulling that funding i don't think Israel is going to chance it do you ? One would think, they should have thought about all that before the threw in with the other Arab countries in thier attempt to crush the state of Israel...it's funny how it's OK for the Arabs to evict Jews from lands they had in Jordan, Syria,Egypt etc once it was decided they were going to create a state for the jews. But when it comes down to the creation of the state of Israel it's different. Just one question how many Jews are left in these countries ? One would think, they should have thought about the outcome of creating a Jewish state in the middle east when it was all Arab countries, would lead to people hating and wanting to crush Israel. Why do the Jews need their own state? Why not create a state for Christians, or only Muslims, or Buddhists. I would like to see the dollar figures that the US gives to the middle east countries. Comprehensible breakdown.
-
The US has not pulled funding for Israel up to this point. So what makes you think they ever will? The US is a hypocrite in this as well. Israel has been displasing Palestinians since Isreal was planted in the Middle East. You see to forget how important that little fact is and how it ties in with everything you are seeing between Israel and the Arabs. I am really tired of the rhetoric 'poor Israel'.
-
Yes exactly. Here is my solution. Cut the who land that both groups occupy in half, from east to west. Palestine takes half and Isreal takes half. I would support that. But how many of you would suport this plan? Great idea! Except that the Palestinians living in the Jewish half would run off into refugee camps and then demand the land back, and spawn terrorists, and be supported by the rest of the Muslim world. Which, uh, is what happened the last time someone had that idea. You ARE aware, right, that the UN did this very thing? Except the Arabs invaded, the Jews beat their asses, Egypt annexed part of the Palestinian land, and Jordan annexed another big chunk, and then there was another round of Arab attacks which lost more ground. Yes I am aware of it. And it turned out really damn well. So why was it split up in the first place? OH YES I recall now. I am saying cut it in half, north south. Done and done. But neither side would even dare to make even that kind of compromise.
-
awesome idea, this will be a wealth of information I might not have gone to pursue myself.

But how many of you would suport this plan? I would say let the UN do it, but as we know they have been utterly USELESS to resolve the Palestinian/Isreali conflict to this date. And Israel just keeps getting BIGGER. Nothing the UN did , in the end, was worth it, for the US would veto any resolution against Israel. But no problems pointing the finger at the Palestines when things go wrong. Remember the incusrion from Israel to the Palestinian jail where they brought tanks in and such? Those prisoners served their term and were to be released. But Israel did not like that, thinkin these guys are going to attack again. so LET'S ROLL our tanks in there and capture them anyways and throw them in an Israeli jail for good. I mean Israel could have used diplomatic channels to solve that issue, but they went it alone and stormed in anyways. This is outright an act of aggression/war.

Now that, is a movie. Please tell me Steven Seagal marches on the plane and shoots all the snakes? Then we find its a plane destined for an Indian reserve, where the snakes were going to rid the Indians for further oil development? No? Much hate for Segal. But that movie is going to be campy cheesy and a hellalotafun. Segal needs to stay of this plane.
