  1. The Jays 2015 lineup is very, very young. Here's hoping one or two of them become major league players in a big hurry.
  2. When federal workers travel on official business, they get a per diem amount to cover the cost of meals . They can eat an included breakfast at their hotel, eat it elsewhere, bring bacon and eggs in their coat pocket, or skip the meal entirely. It does not matter, the daily amount remains the same. There are exceptions. if you're travelling to Iqaluit or to a place where it is impossible to buy 3 meals per day on the per diem amount, you can get receipts and claim the actual cost. Many private companies do the same, others require receipts. We once did an audit of the actual cost of the process, and switched to per diems because the admin cost of auditing travel claims for somebodys meals was just stupid.
  3. I agree. We should just give every kid a PhD at birth, and a smartphone at age two with a lifetime plan paid for by the state. There is no need for schools at all if children have smartphones, and they will have wonderful, meaningful lives ahead of all of them with a prestigious degree in hand. It would save us hundreds of billions of dollars and our children would flourish.
  4. He was not made an example. What he did was a vicious, unprovoked and very dangerous assault to the head on an unprotected player from behind. It would normally be worth 8 to 10 games suspension. The only reason he got just four games is that he is a veteran with no suspension history.
  5. I don't know, who are you talking about? My SIL is a prof at a university. She does teach some classes, supervises grad students, does some research in her field and does admin work for her faculty. Her contract permits a paid sabbatical for up to 8 months every five years, but there are strings and she has to apply and be approved. The purpose of the sabbatical is for research. The topic has to be reviewed and approved by peers, other profs in other countries that understand the work and deem it worthy. There must be deliverables in the form of an agreed contract between her and the university: a book, published papers, presentations, etc. The deliverables are assessed by the same grup at the end of the sabbatical. If travel or other costs are needed, an approved budget is agreed. It is not a holiday, though she does not have to account for her time every day. But, she does not have to account for her time every day, for the most part, in her everyday career.
  6. I am positive that Stephen Harper must be blamed, because it is Thursday..
  7. I did not say it was a problem. I am wondering at the implication that the human organisms that are not prone to reproduction have no biological purpose. I don't know what it is, but it would be unusual for there to be none.
  8. The Jets have a grind ahead with games against four teams still scrapping for playoff positions: Canucks, Wild, Blues and and Flames. Their only break is the Avalanche, and 3 out of 5 on the road. It won't be easy. The Kings are right on their tails with a game in hand, and an easier schedule. They play the Oilers twice, the Avalanche and Sharks. Their only games against playoff teams are against the Canucks and Flames, and they have three home games out of six.
  9. No purpose? If we were all homosexuals, our species would die out when the level of procreation plummeted. Yes, some homosexuals do have children, but I think it is the exception and not the norm. So what is the purpose of homosexual humans in our human biology, because all creatures large and small have an evolutionary purpose?
  10. The USA wants this deal a lot more than Iran does, and Iran knows it. That is why it has dragged on for what- a decade now? By 'USA' I mean Obama. Tis deal was on his list of things to be done when he became Prez in 2008, and his legacy is pretty thin......... It's all meaningless. Iran is the big dog in that neighbourhood and is not the least reluctant to push their interests very hard indeed. They'll be fully weaponized in a few years. Or less. The Saudis and Israelis should both be crapping their pants, the US has effectively served notice that they are not interested in forcing Iran into anything.
  11. Nov 11? Yeah, Nov 11, 2007.
  12. Reminder: Coming on April 5: Wolf Hall on PBS.
  13. I imagine President Assad is quivering in fear at the thought of six F-18s bombing his enemies -one bunch of his myriad of enemies-far from Damascus.
  14. Nicely summarized.
  15. You can look this up on a smartphone.
  16. And both statements are completely irrelevant in this context. People attending citizenship ceremonies are not required to get a letter of permission from their rabbi or detailed theology arguments to support their headgear.
  17. My wife got a new student in her Grade 3 class in the middle of the last school year. The whole family of six had quit homeschooling abruptly to attend public schools. . My wife did not have any background on the kid when she got her, so she asked the standard question 'where was the last school you attended'? The answer was "I was home teached". That got a laugh in the staff room. The whole family was 2 or 3 years behind grade level, except in religious studies.
  18. Memory Express locally here- they have a big online presence and also a retail operation/service centre nearby. Their service is excellent and reasonably priced, another area where they eat Future Shops lunch. No. There are several ways to spend that and more without involving a high rise. It's business. Over 10 years. It is probably more like $140k. I tried Leons for a while, but they employ a revolving door of idiots, have nowhere near the selection of brands compared to Sears, and their best deals are only available for the very cheapest appliances.
  19. TVs at Costco. Appliances at Sears. Very seriously. At their Home Centres. No falling tiles in the three near here, they are modern stores with white goods and furniture. I've bought roughly $100k in appliances the last decade and perhaps 70% of them were at Sears. They sell all brands, there is always something on sale, they negotiate and if you buy often they will sweeten deals. So yeah, Sears. I left a Future Shop once without my proposed purchase because the salesman would not shut up about the warranty. I later learned that the sales staff earn commissions on everything, but their cut of an extended warranty can be as much as 50%. It explains why they pitch them hard, it did not explain why they don't take a strong hint or a blunt refusal. Good bye and good riddance, their business model just doesn't work.
  20. The court agrees with me. She is not asking to wear Nazi clothing. Many, many people wear their best and traditional clothing to the citzenship ceremony. That in itself is a Canadian tradition. Or would you have all immigrants, sorry new citizens, dress up as lumberjacks or in fake Indian clothing? Are you threatened by a Sikh with turban and knife? There is no immigrant group that wears KKK hoods as traditional clothing, so you'll have to try again, but harder. The arguments against this are based in bigotry, racism and xenophobia. She is not a threat. There is no direct link between this woman and everybody in Canada being forced to wear a niqab. No, you don;'t get to conflate everything. Those that howl against this are the threat, not her. Of course their voices are increasingly and thankfully a minority.
  21. She would drink a gallon of Harpers blood, while it was still in his body.
  22. I don't shop at either. They lost my business with overly aggressive hard selling of extended warranties. Worse, their prices are not competitive on apliances and TVs with Costco, Sears and other stores. The sales they offer on computer stuff is only for outdated clearance equipment. I won't miss them or Best Buy.
  23. Yes, there are limits, though 'societal standards' are not the only or main protocol. The law , starting with freedom of expression and freedom of religion have a much stronger influence and rightly so. The 'societal standard' regarding an issue like same sex marriage for example would have it outside 'societal standards' , considered unlawful and unseemly as recently as a decade ago. Many people still think it so, but their standards don't apply to us any more. This is not an example where they apply. Genital mutilation would be an example of where they do apply. Our societal standards are that we are officially multicultural and do very often permit persons to do anything they wish within the law. There is no reason to deny this woman what she specifically asks. Not her husband, her imam, her lawyer or anybody else- what she has articulated. She has been thoroughly identified. End of. The govt will lose their appeals. and they know it.
  24. No, the point is that there are no degrees of equality in a free, tolerant and democratic society. . This woman has equally as much right to cover her face as does another person to expose theirs. You can disagree with that right overall, but you cannot deny it to one while granting it to another. The motives of those that deny her the right to act according to her beliefs- beliefs and actions that cause no actual harm to others- have nothing to do with identification at a ceremony, that has been exhaustively dismissed. What the haters of this woman are doing is exactly what they claim she/her traditions are doing: exercising control and power over her person. It is shameful and ignorant behaviour and unworthy of the heart of our nation, and I am not referring to her.
  25. Edmonton is right in Torontos rear view mirror with another win tonight.. Can the Leafs run the table with another losses to end the season?
