  1. Except for the PCs of course, who made the teachers in Alberta the highest paid in Canada.
  2. Some people here transfer one woman wanting to wear a scarf over her face to the dismissal and condemnation of a billion people. Imagine that leap.
  3. Ask Sarah Palin.
  4. I hope you don't take this all too hard: Duffy is on trial. I know that hurts, and the guy you linked too is hacking furiously at the same windmills as you, but that is the way it is.
  5. wake me up when something beyond petty criminality happens.
  6. The revelations have been devastating so far. (devastating for anybody wishing to remain conscious)
  7. Is that less costly than taking high risks in financial investments that ordinary have no clue as to what they are doing? Like mutual funds.... with high fees and unclear defintions of the actual risk... Because that is what many Candians do when they venture outside GICs.
  8. well that is sorted, since Chiarelli took both titles from Lowe and MacTavish. Neither got officially fired, but they don't have their old jobs any more.
  9. They ere all wrong, and badly, in Alberta last time. BC too I believe. I think that polls are now mostly just a political tool. The results are more or less purchased in advance.
  10. This is where you explain how you get the provinces to agree to completely rewrite the Constitution.
  11. don't forget to curse Katz then- you know, the owner who later apologized in full page newspaper ads for that 'moving the team' business ploy. You're delusional if you think that was Laforges idea. Perhaps they are bringing in Ciarelli so Lowe doesn't have to fire MacT and Katz doesn't have to fire Lowe. Optics amongst friends.
  12. Laforge did far more than sell hockey. He has generated and milked every revenue stream. The Oilers bought the Trappers and sold them when they had to for a profit. The Oil Kingss have made money under his tenure. He negotiated new and very favourable terms for the old leases at Rexall and was a big part of Katz risking very little to guarantee control and big future revenue streams from the arena district . Yeah, Toronto style. They need to hire a coach soon, while they are still available. I'd guess Julien as a contender, except repor tedly his relationship with Chiarelli is not strong. Do they hire a coach then fire MacT? That only works if Chiarelli then slides directly into GM position. Why not just fire the GM now and let Chiarelli pick a coach directly. Accountability..... I've been listening to this bullshit for a long time. Results. Period. On the ice. I know they are not SC contenders and not even close to playoff contenders. But the team has not improved for many years. Talk is cheap.

  14. compounding mattered when savings account interest rates were 7%+. Now investing is all about risk, as in how much of your life savings are you willing to lose?
  15. That does not answer the question of how it is weighted, and exactly how you account for the very numerous people who vote but don't want to waste time by getting themselves on a call list? I simply don't believe any corporate claims that polling firms don't return over and over to people that answer their phones when they know it's a polling firm. Wouldn't non-response refer to people who answer and refuse to participate?.
  16. Yeah, saw that last night. Laforge has done a great job with the business side of the team. We'll see what happens to Lowe. I expect he'll be in an even lower profile job than now. Katz won't trust him with the money side of it, Lowe has no experience with it at all. If he does get a title on that side, it won't mean anything other than a way to save face. MacT is a tougher one, I hope the Oilers don't go the way of the Leafs and start firing people in reverse order. Fire everybody would be my preference, with the exception of Laforge. None of it means anything until the Oilers start doing it on the ice. By winning some games. Talk is cheap.
  17. They aren't going to get premium players via free agency. Good players can play anywhere, and the only way to get them here is to offer way too much money.- and everybody else will give them lots of money. About the only one the Oilers have had any luck with in recent times is Pouliot. Drafting and developing players , especially goalies and defence, usually means a few years before you know if you have anything. The mood is way t0o ugly in Edmonton to wait a few years for anything. If you want to get quality, you have to give quality and the only quality that Edmonton has is in young forwards. And now they have another really good one. Their top six next year will look like Hall, Eberle, RNH,McJesus, Purcell,Yakupov, Pouliot, Dreisatl. Oh wait, that is 8 , not 6. Their defenceman are jointly named Bring In The Clowns. MacTavish will trade on or more of those 8, and try to sweeten the deal with draft picks and perhaps a giveaway defenceman since we have several on the team and in the AHL.. Purcell and Yakupov have the least value.
  18. and it has been unreliable pretty often. It relies on people looking at their call display and taking a call from a polling firm. How do you weight that?
  19. The pitching has been poor , both starting and relieving. They are 20th in MLB in team pitching ERA, not a place where playoff teams reside. The pitching staff jointly has the fifth worst OPS in MLB, so they getting hit and hit hard. They have the highest number of walks in MLB as a staff....... It's all offence now. The pitchers win games because the Jays have the 5th highest run support in MLB. They need help in all aspects of pitching. They also need some better management from Gibbons. He is almost always reluctant to take anybody out before the fifth, and this applies most to older guys like Dickey. Last game he did take out Sanchez after he survived another poor performance on the mound. Better coaches acknowledge that winning comes before ego. Perhaps Gibbons know how truly shallow it is in the bullpen and delays too long for that reason. They've already dumped two of their bullpen pitchers 3 weeks into the season.
  20. The point is that shows like Walking Dead are written on the fly, rather than novel based programs like GoT. Walking Dead routinely gets rid of people using the same old meme, getting chomped by the extras. They can continue or end the show by simply writing it through. G0T theoretically has a more of less predetermined plot and hopefully an ending. I have heard that MadMen ended because they could not afford the actors any longer.
  21. The question is: who invited him, who did he talk to, and why? It might be bold, but I really doubt it was Mr Bold MacT that invited him.
  22. The shortcomings on the Oilers, aside from the entire management , are on defence and in goal. We can wait for 5 more years to see how babies like all the AHL defence(including Marincin and all the other failures) pan out, or try to obtain some established players via trade or free agency. Free agents are expensive, and the good ones don't want to play in Edmonton. Nobody is going to give us anybody for a package of future second and third rounders. The trade choices for us are core players or draft picks or both. The choice to trade anybody is already in the hands of Oilers management, and those choices do not change no matter who is in charge. Note that in five years while waiting for players to perhaps develop, the core group will be at free agency themselves. And that is what McJesus makes happen: an expendable young forward to get a decent defenceman. Now. Not in never never time like Marincin. Duh.
  23. Many shows have been derailed by the major cost: actors. Long running shows like Law and Order easily got around this by keeping the same format, but dumping key characters one at a time when they tried to leverage the shows fame into a bigger paycheque. GoT cannot really do this as it is based on a script and characters that they cannot deviate from too much. What would they do without Tyrion, Daenrys, Arya and a few others? What do they do when Peter Drinklage says no more work unless they pay up? It's pretty hard to write him out of the script now, unless JJ Martin has already done it. Perhaps they could simply replace him, as happened with the lead actor in Spartacus due to the death of a principal after the first season. But GoT is much further advanced in the plot, and in Spartacus they were writing scripts around a flexible story.
  24. Small businesses are treated like an enemy of the state in France. Hiring anybody is a very serious undertaking, the expense and liability is very high. Growing a business by hiring staff is far more risky than here. Fortunately in the EU it is reasonably easy for a business to operate in one country and be registered for tax purposes in another. And many people do just this, including my brother.
  25. How is that working out for you in Ontario? Financially?
