  1. Yep, nothing to be gained by saying much now beyond the obvious: an affirmation that the federal govt supports.... the federal govt. which includes Quebec in the federation. It will be an interesting sideshow to watch Marois attempt to muzzle Peladeau, a man who has run his own show in obsessive detail for decades. Will he read from her script at all times?
  2. The aircraft is under a big tarp in the same place they are storing the aircraft that did not hit the Pentagon on 9/11.
  3. It's pretty weird- many people invest a lot of effort to get rich, while hating those who are rich. If you're going to trim it down to One World Government, comrade, why have any countries?. We could call it The Hive.
  4. Spoiler Alert: Some of you won't be aware of the premise of this old storyline, but the main character dies at the end in a gruesome fashion. Not suitable for children. A sequel seems unlikely.
  5. Even if there were, it wouldn't make any difference for a simple reason. When countries impose punitive taxes, the rich simply go somewhere else where taxes are lower, and they take their money and jobs with them. Nothing to it really. Bring a few million, and you can have a passport too.
  6. Until the reason for two stolen passports on one flight is explained, a terror incident is the number one probabil;ity.
  7. I was fishing last summer in Prince William Sound on a charter out of Valdez. We caught our limit of delicious halibut in no time. The commercial and sport fisheries are thriving. It's a beautiful spot, even with huge tankers cruising through it every day for decades. What was your point about PWS?
  8. So to summarize: the Canuckleheads traded a fine goalie tandem for .... pretty much nothing. Nice work Gillis. "Never quite knew what to make of him as a goal tender but a class act and always a gentleman." His public persona was always as a funny and smart guy, and a team player always. As a goalie, his accomplishments were many: two world championships, a world cup, two Olympic golds and a few NHL all star appearnaces. He never won a Cup, but that was not his fault. The two times the Nucks went deep in the playoffs, they were beaten by Hawks/Bruins that were clearly better teams.
  9. I got my first touchscreen and first taste of Windows 8 a couple months ago on a new laptop(ASUS). Love the laptop, it has a really good display and has a small solid state drive that lets it start up in a few seconds. I hate Windows 8 because it is a horrible, non intuitive mess. I've been using Windows products since they began and this is a total piece of crap. Again. I moved from one piece of crap- Vista- to something I thought was not possible- a worse pile of reeking turds. Nothing is intuitive on it. I am puzzled why all the big brains at MS would allow Apple and Google to so comprehensively eat their corporate lunch.
  10. I just saw a terrific movie called The Past.(It's in French with English subtitles) If you only like flicks that feature lots of action, blood and sex- stop reading now because this one has none of the above. It's directed and written by an Iranian, Asghar Farhadi. He also did another superb, highly recommended and similar movie called A Separation a couple of years ago that won an Oscar and Golden Globe as Best Foreign movie. The Past is set in working class Paris. A man returns to divorce his estranged wife, to find she is living with another man. There is a situation between the woman, her boyfriend and her daughter that causes immense strain on the relationship. The returning man tries to mediate. Dark secrets are revealed. It is wonderfully written and acted by people I've never seen before. The child actors are so good I wondered if it was somehow a real family. It is dark and intricate, a tapestry of lies and hopes and half truths, with every wounded by their shared lives. In the end, Farhadi is careful to leave some things unsaid. It was one of those rare movies where we talked about it for qute a while after we left the theater. It is both raw and delicate drama, and worth seeing if you like something a little denser than Iron Man 7..
  11. What is sinister about the stolen passports item is there are two of them..... One on board, could happen. Two of them on the same flight? There are about 10000 Candian passports reported lost or stolen every year, according to a security expert on CBC radio yesterday. And that is just Canada. With reference to mechanical failures, the 777 has apparently never had a major crash in 20 years. Always the first time, but....
  12. Now you're sounding like a troll. Real teachers- including my spouse- never, ever refer to their PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION as a union. Neither do other professionals with unions, like doctors, lawyers and engineers. The reasons are obvious.
  13. Its not a false dilemma at all. If you want to spend more money on education or health care you can either raise taxes or take from one to fund the other. There are relatively piddling amounts availbel to be taken from other govt programs which will reduce funds available for roads, parks and provincial social services. The big money is already in education and health care. Time to cut the bullshit and have an honest discussion about both of these massive spending priorities since they consume and will consume most tax revenue. That won't change no matter how much you increase taxes.
  14. Dont be so harsh, Suzuki spends a lot of time observing clouds and weather from inside those carbon spewing aircraft he takes to paid speaking engagements and book promotion events.
  15. I thought the Americans were going to be much better than they turned out to be. They rolled over some weak sisters in early play, and barely beat the Russians who turned out to be very soft. They lost to Canada in a game that was the most lopsided 1-0 game I've seen for a long time, and were crushed by the Finns. They finsihed 4th, which was about right.
  16. Dont know about hockey but China spends plenty of money on the other team sport, curling. They have four temas- men/women/senior/junior that don't have any jobs other than perfecting their curling. The govt pays major expense money so they can attend events around the world and play agasint the best. They have a very successful Canadian curler , Marcel Rocque, directing their comeptitive curling program full time. . It is starting to show, both the mens and womens senior teams at world and Olympics are good, have had success and are not taken lightly by countries with long curling traditions.
  17. I agree, but it is very doubtful that the USA will ever give up that much sovereignty to anybody, including Canada. It effectively removes one aspect of border security from their control and puts it in the hands of another country. Aside from the optics of doing that, the USA has a massive security establishment and industry that has grown vastly since 9/11, and the investors in that business(public and private) won't want to cede any of it.
  18. I heard the other day that similar bills are pending in about 20 other states. The crackpot religious types behind this campaign are organized and well funded. Luckily, their opponents are equally determined and have some heavyweight support in business, entertainment and the public.
  19. If you mean taxpayers pockets into a public purse, then no it is not Every province has different services covered in differing amounts right now. The two tier public/private system has been thriving in Canada for half a century or more. What will change in coming years is the ratio of the two as the demographics become overwhelming is that fewer services will be offered from the public purse, and those same services will be covered out of private and/or employer plans. For the elderly, it will be private coverage if they have any money, public subsidy if they don't. There is no way any province can afford to not delist some services, or at least make them income dependent. I wonder if Ontario picked diabetic supplies for Type 2 diabetics because it is for many people a lifestyle disease.
  20. I don't know why the govt would pay anything for that, what could be the rationale? RCMP and military do get end-or-career moves, with the good reason that they transfer locations often (and often involuntarily). When their career ends by retirement, they should and do get another paid move to wherever they have decided to live and start another career or retire. That sounds fair to me, they will have sacrificed things that non-members would never face, including a much harder time building financial secuirty and spousal careers with the frequent moves.. But if your chosen end-of-military career decision is to stay in the city where you reside, why would taxpayers pay anything? General civil servants don't get the same end-of-career consideration, since they choose their career and geographic moves.
  21. I did not know that about Shanghai, thanks. Im not sure what you mean about future relationships, since the story revolves around people staring at their smartphones whole they relate to AI software- not people. After digesting this movie for a while, I've kind of changed my opinion. It is clever, and well done, but ultimately pretty creepy.
  22. Mmmm... maybe not. I thought this was wretchedly overrated and deserved little of the attention it got. Bradley Cooper is a marginal actor on his best day, and Robert Deniro was just kind of embarassing, again. Worst of all was the hokey, pathetic script- a recycled mess IMO with an ending that you could call after 10 minutes of the start. The saving grace was Lawrence, who did her best with a poor script. I think they gave her an award to make up for the one she should have gotten for Winters Bone.
  23. Let's not forget about a whole bunch of some of ther best grain producing land in the world. The Ukranian nationals are not in a good negotiating position despite a motivated, relatively educated population that wants to join the West. They depend on Russia for gas for heating homes and industry. The Russinas lust after their resources, Worst of all, they have no money, the country is broke..
  24. most people with health problems related to asbestos are people in asbestos related industries, not people affected by asbestos n homes or offices. The vast majority of asbestos is bound to other material and it is not so easy to get it airborne. Asbestos removal was a scare industry of the 80s and 90s, some contractors made hardcore money off the removal hysteria. Much of the time, encapsualtion or simple management was a far less costly and effective solution.
  25. ??? The outcome was most defintiely in doubt until the end. it was 1-1 with seven minutes left in regulation. A bad bounce, in off a skate and we'd be watching figure skating on Friday. But never mind, its USA on Friday. The Aneicans have had two silvers in the last three Olys, They have a big, fast team and a fine goalie. They are also undefeated so far. Hang on to your seats
