You keep demonstrating , with statements like this, that you simply do not understand the nature of electricity generation, transmission or distribution and the required capacities of each in a modern industrial society.. TimG and I have explained the absolute need for redundancy in a system that produces power from 'reliable' sources like nuclear, hydro, coal, or natural gas. You can feed in some juice from unreliable sources like wind or solar, but you still must have the base system+redundancy in place at all times. So, those unreliable sources are just additional redundancy, and vastly more expensive redundancy to boot.
-
Nicely summarized. Our modern industrial economy and the comfortable lifestyle we all enjoy is entirely dependent today on an utterly reliable source of electricity. Not some of the time, but all of the time.

Nor will it ever compare to the pro sports business that is NCAA football and basketball. But thats OK. It is still entertaining.

Guilty In Canada For Bribery – In India

It is hard to imagine a significant business deal in India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia etc etc that does not involve corruption. But as noted, all Western countires have criminal codes that punish bribing overseas. -
BC Teachers Getting Screwed...Again

Oh, I think parents understand the situation: their kids are going to get screwed out of an education by greedy teachers. Don't assume your usual blackmail will work this time. -
Why Are We Paying More For Gas Than Americans?
overthere replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
one word : taxes It is most obvious to me travelling to Yukon, a remote place where gasoline is cheaper than it is in BC. Ironically, almost all the gas in YT is trucked from BC. The prices in the first post are not indicative of prices across Canada. This morning, regulsar cost 112.9/liter in most stations around Edmonton, except at discount places like Costco where they were $1.06 or $1.07. Word is out that most stations are bumping that to $1.26/liter today. Larceny. -
User fees vs Taxpayer Funding For Infrastructure
overthere replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The problem with so much of infrastructure is that it has no political gloss when it works, it only gets any attention when somebody or a bunch of people die from lack of it. Collapsing overpasses in Quebec, bad water in Ontario -those get people unelected. Decades of troublefree and invisible management- no votes.. It is really hard to get voters excited over your comeptent management of their sewage. As for money, Alberta should pay for everything. -
Canada Gives $36 Million For Maternal and Child Health
overthere replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
First Nations budget runs in the neighbourhood of $10 billion annually. I don't think $36 million would make any difference to First Nations or Africa. -
The phone companies just shrug off annoyances like having to amortize the cost of a phone over 2 years rather than 3. Doesn't cost them a dime either way. What really puckers their sphincters is the thought of actually having competition for customers. That has faded with the death of some of those conpanies who hoped to compete. We'll continue to pay far too much for slow services.

University of Saskatchewan fires professor in efforts to muzzle him
overthere replied to RB's topic in Business and Economy
The professor certainly has the right and the duty to publicly address his field of expertise, but this guy is not a Doctor of Education, Business or University Management. He was canned for mouthing off about a provincial scheme to reduce costs at the U of S, The firing of him as a professor was over the top. Firing him as Dean was probably the right thing, since he is supposedly part of the management team tasked with implementing the changes. It's not a democracy, and that part of education does not require the cherished 'collaboration'. Of course, those changes mean fewer professors overall...... -

I don't want politicians to mess with abortion laws, and I want Trudeau to shut up. Shut up like Harper has done, like oither PMs have done, and continue to do nothing at all. How do you know what women or a woman wants? Give em the choice I say. Like Harper says too. -

Toronto must be a wonderful place to live! Can I live there? I know I could move cheaply from Alberta to there, maybe for free. There are several thouisand Uhaul trucks and trailers with Ontario plates waiting for somebody, anybody to head in that direction. -
Yep, no rednecks in Chicoutimi or Trois Rivieres. Albertas population has grown by about 60% in 20 years. Did we get the adventurous, hardworking types from Montreal, Djibouti, Krakow and Algiers or did we get the waterhaters from Nebraska?

Constitutional Monarchy and the "Nation to Nation" Relationshi
overthere replied to Remiel's topic in Political Philosophy
That sounds like anecdotal rubbish, and a grotesque generalization of the work ethic of a lot of people you clearly know little about. First Nations see themselves as a level of government equal in some respecvts to the federal government though with different responsibilities. The relationship between levels of govt regarding taxes is hierarchical. Perhaps you weren't aware, for example, that the federal governments does not pay "property taxes" to lower levels of government. They do pay what is called Grants in Lieu of Taxes in equivalent amounts, but they dont recognize soveriegnty over them of other levels of govt. There is a pecking order. Since the First Nations do not generally recognize surrendering their soveriegnty except in limyted ways through treaties, why would they pay federal tax for money earned on their own national lands? The federal govt recognizes this readily for 150 years and counting, since they don't attempt to collect - having been signatory to those agreements in the first place. You must really hate the relationship between govts in places where no treaties exist..... -

I don't know what Harpers Secret Agenda might be, It's a secret. But his public and often stated position on abortion is this, since he's said it many times now: no legislation. Not only has he said it, he hasn't done a thing towards legislation. Same as Mulroney, Campbell, Chretien and Martin. Harper has set the stage many times. He does not need to do anything else, since anything else just fans the flames, which Trudeau has foolishly and needlessly done. If you're prolife, it's the action of a colossal asshole, when you think it through. What more could I possibly want from Harper? -
BC Teachers Getting Screwed...Again
overthere replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
The teachers better have their backyard bunkers sotcked with food and water. When parents start to be affected by their children staying home from school becaiuse of greedy teachers, the pitchforks will come out. Oh yeah, that tired old meme that gets dragged out every time a public service union gets into a negotiating buntoss. Somewhere somebody makes more money than me, so I deserve more too, just because. I'd like to see the BC govt determine what the actual value is for the work, then pay accordingly. Of course, they'd have to consider if there are any unemployed teachers out there anywhere in Canada they could hire who could help keep labour costs down. -
In the end I don't think Tywin cares who killed Joffrey. His death and show trial is an opportunity in many ways: - since he is chief magistrate of the court, it solidifies his position as being visibly the guy in charge, the Regent, until Tymion comes of age. It's not a coincidence that Tywin sits in the Iron Throne while court is in session. -get rid of Tyrion and any possibility he could inherit anythign anywhere as a Lannister heir. He knew Tyrion could admit guilt and be sent to the Wall for life. Of course, Tyrion has tossed some serious sand in that Vaseline by failing to follow Tywins script - it shunts Cersei to the side for years, perhaps forever -it gets Jaime back into Tywins control, since he is the only heir possible. -since Sansa is Tyrions legal wife, it means she is guilty by association and cannot ever take any kind of high station in the Seven Kingdoms, her status as senior Stark is diminished. All of that is in limbo now....

Harper has spilled his guts repeatedly on abortion, saying he has no intention of introducing any abortion legislation in the House. That means 'status quo' or 'easy access to abortion for Canadian women' in case it is unclear. Next up: what else is in Trudeaus Secret Agenda? -
Florida woman granted asylum in Canada
overthere replied to Peter F's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Yes, they most certainly are a crime here: it is the crime of sexual assault to have intercourse with a minor in Canada. Same as Florida and every other jurisdiction. Ms Harvey offered no defence at her trial and did not testify. The prosecution presented- among other evidence- her DNA on a used condom found in the boys room. She did the crime- it's the time that was troublesome. What I wonder at is that the USA pioneered the whole defence of cruel and unusual punishment as a strong avenue of appeal for convicted felons. Why hasn't she appealed the sentence? USA is the land of endless due process for white middle class people who (rarely) get railroaded with a bizarre sentence. By fleeing she now has charges pending that won't go away even if her original sentence is reduced. -

Women should not be voting on it either. Nobody should be. It's been settled via 'no legislation' for decades and that has worked out just fine for Canadian women. People who want abortions can get one, people who do not want an abortion don't have to get one. Until Justin opened his yawning piehole yet again, their was nothing to talk about. Perfect. If I was a prolifer, I'd be sueing Trudeau and the Liberals over them denying my opportunity to exercise my Charter rights to run as an MP and serve Canada as a Liberal candidate. Any opening, any crack, will do. And no, of course his action was not necessary.
