Not true. Strong trade bait comes from players that are playing well, like Lind, in postions that your team lacks. He may also be surplus, since the Jays could probably manage without his bat since they have many sluggers. He doesn't run well or play a position with any great skill, so it is his bat that matters and right now he is red hot. Two teams that have really strong pitching and need some hitting urgently are St Louis and Atlanta. Bonus: they are both in the NL. The Jays also have to decide soon on some roster moves. Colby Rasmus and Santos will both be back soonish. What do they do with Rasmus? Do they send Gose back to the minors? I thinl they should look at dumping one of their catchers. I've never seen a team keep 3 catchers, all of whom only play that position, and none of them are professional hitters that would be an effective DH. It's very unusual. And because the Jays have so many pitchers, they have few position players on the bench. They should trade a catcher(Nivarro?) and keep Gose for his extreme speed and he is an OK backup if any of the regualr outfielders gets hurt. Too bad Gose and Rasmus both hit left, they'd be good to platoon.

Northern Gateway Pipeline Lawsuit
overthere replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Yes it is relevant, the same thing applies to Northern Gateway oil or Keystone oil. Refineries are almost always adjacent to end users, and North Amertica has generally excess refining capacity now. -
US Sending Lethal Aid to Syrian Rebels.

Yeah, Assad claimed the rebels were using those weapons, but he is internationally recognized as a lying sack of shit. Assad was demonstrably using them as confirmed by independent international observers. Assad is a butcher, and is going to kill everybody that opposes him in the slightest way now. Watch what happens now, since he has 'legitimized' himself with a farcical election. -

Doesn't work like that, refineries are almost always located near their end markets. Different regions have different needs from the refinery. It might make sense to upgrade the bitumwen to synthetic crude at the sites(and there are several upgraders in and around Fort Mac) but that is not what the owners of the material have chosen. They have invested billions in upgraders at existing Gulf Coast refineries. -

Neither does money. If Canada refuses to sell its resources internationally, the capital investments, jobs, and tax revenue just get done elsewhere. Total(France) just postponed a major Canadian project because of our endless waffling. They'll spend the designated capital money somehwere else in the world, there are many candidates for projects. Oh well, who needs public services or a social contract anyway. -
No, the role of elected polticians is exactly that: to establish legislation that sets out a range of Criminal Code penalties for crimes. The criminal courts decide where each criminal, if convicted, fits within that range of penalties. The'experts' also operate within guidfelines established by those same politicians, elected by us to do exactly that.

Oh, and Lind might be a great idea as trade bait, he is having a great year for batting average, on base % and slugging %. His power numbers are down, fewer home runs but his trade value may bever be higher. They have Fransisco to fill in his left hand production.

They should very definitely trade for some more pitching

Five Taliban For One American Soldier
overthere replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
That is not accurate. 'These folks' are not in a fuedal system, they are in the tribal system they have been in for centuries. The difference is vast. In recent years, the Taliban have been influenced by radical Islamists, including Al Qaeda and the wahhabi fundamentalists funded out of Saudi Arabia. That influence is waning, but the tribal instincts never wane. They don't claim Afghanistan or pakistan or any other country. They don't really recognize those artificial borders, and never have. Again, tribal not nationalist. I don't understand your 'barbarian' comparison, other than it sounds sneering and condescending to these people. People, not animals. The Pashtuns have largely moved away from much sympathy for AQ or the Taliban, since those groups have brought nothing but troible for a long time. Not all Pashtuns are Al Qaeda, not all Pashtuns are Taliban, not many Pashtuns are interested in jihad or radical Islam. The great majority are like you and I and want to be left in peace. -
"The government-controlled CBC" tells Harper to back off
overthere replied to cybercoma's topic in Media and Broadcasting
I did offer suggestions, but I don't think that CBC supporters can objectively look at the entire premise of public broadcasting in Canada in the new millenia. It's the same old Canuck meme; we just cannot have a mature discussion about what we think are our institutions, no matter how utterly shitty they may have become. Health care is another example, maybe worse than CBC since it is more important to each of us. We cannot speak of either without hysteria. So we all understand the 'nationbuilding', advanced technology that radio waves represented in Canada in the 1930s. TV was groundbreaking stuff in the 1950s. I get that Foster Hewitt and then Don Messers Jubiless brought us all closer together for a group cuddle, made our vast country smaller. But the world has changed. What is the purpose of CBC TV today? What justifies spending a billion per year on a TV network that very, very few of us watch? Network TV, including the CBC, is not doing well at all anywhere. What is it about the CBC that makes it worth so much to so very few who actually watch it? -

Ah, another patriot who wants somebody else to pay for his entertainment. -
Pakistan is an utterly corrupt state where you can never be quite sure who pays for the guns, or who is shooting them. The miliatry and internal security forces both have their own political agendas and it is entirely possible this 'terrrorist' attack involved one or both services. Wheels within wheels.

US Sending Lethal Aid to Syrian Rebels.
overthere replied to monty16's topic in The Rest of the World
It does not matter now, the civil war in Syria is effectively over and Assad has won. The next couple of years will see 'mopping up' operations. In this case, mopping up means just that- Assad slaughtering the remnants of opposition. cleansing every village of any dissent with barrel bombs and chemical weapons, while Russia, Iran and Monty16 cheer. -

More nails in the coffin for the role of the CRTC?

Your post ignores the other side of the equation. Tax revenue is one side, but what of the other side, expensitures. The social contract we in the West enjoy now is very large, and is much. much more massive than dreamed about only a couple of generations ago. Our expectations have soared. Compared to what was available to average citizens 60 years ago services have not been 'radically curtailed', they have been exponentially increased.

I doubt it, the Nazis and German industry had a strong and mutually profitable relationship. Germany was doing just fine in the war and would have had a much better immediate outcome at the end of hostilities had Hitler not made one very critical mistake. He refused to listen to his very excellent generals on military matters, and made disastrous military decisions. Mind you, Germany has done very well overall since the war despite him.

Game of Thrones is different in that millions of people- those that have read the books- already know what is going to happen. That cuts them out of lunchroom discussions unless they want to kill the buzz. Not many of the other good series available on cable have that option.

But Denmark is effectively already using the Euro, since their currency is required to be in lockstep with Euro valuations: I agree about Spain and Italy being far more important than smallish economies like Greece and Portugal, and made this point earlier.

By now the Rangers realize they are dealing with a pack of vampires. Just when you think the Kings are dead and buried......

I think it is more a matter of the likely court battle not being worth either winning or losing. The province would have to fight the First Nations, and the whole thing would end up at the Supreme Court after millions in legal fees and perhaps some precedents set on jurisdictions on reserves. There are bigger battles ahead, most notably on resource development that will involve the province and FN

Well lets see. Water backs up behind a dam and can be used at leaisure to generate hydro. Coal you just pile up in a big heap. Nuclear is stored in manufactured fuel rods. Natural gas sits in both the ground and in big tanks until you need it. Wind, well that is kind of a waiting game innit. And as you point out the sun rises and sets..... Oh My God. That beep beep you hear means the special bus is waiting to pick you up.

Nore should you be able to.... but you can definitely can and should protect the right to assets for both sets of natural children. -
Does anybody in the NHL have a better group of centres than the Kings? Kopitar. Jeff Carter, Jarrett Stoll and Mike Richards. Richards as the fourth line centre. Wow.

Dunno about Finland, but Germany- the wealthiest Eurpean economy and a major exporter- would be devastated if the Euro was abandoned. Its pretty easy to see why....The Euro is valued moderately worldwide and it is very much in Germanys interest to keep the value moderate and stable. If the Euro collapsed and Germany reverted to the deutschmark, that currency would be very valuable overnight, which would mean German export goods would be massively expensive- and good bye German economy. It is far less expensive for Germany to prop up the relentlessly idiotic Greek state than to enable the collapse of their own economy. Denmark is involved in the process to adopt the Euro in the next couple of years.
