Trus dat. The local police here(large force) actively recruit police in England and there are a fair number here now. They get veteran cops with a few years experience on the job and the retraining is minimal.

Five Taliban For One American Soldier
overthere replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Bergdahl is definitely an odd duck with an unusual background story, including how he came to be in Taliban custody. And he is not yet 'back'. While he is out of Afghanistan, he remains in US custody.... it is unclear if he'll go home to his family or into a military prison awaiting a court martial. A couple of factors probably had some bearing on the Americans negotiating an exchange. He is reportedly in poor health and getting him out alive is better than abandoning him to die. The US is also winding down rapidly in Afghanistan and don't want the optics of leaving behind their only POW, though there is discussion about that status. -
These are salad days for the NHL. A massive TV deal. attendance strong in many markets. labour peace for many years ahead. and now a dream media matchup for the Stanley Cup final, the two biggest US cities slugging it out.

BC Teachers Getting Screwed...Again

Perhaps the government should spend the two summer months hiring replacement workers. That would save a lot of money, and minimize the impact on students. Win-win. -
Discounted? If you buy a plan that incudes a 'free' phone, the cost of the phone is amortized over the term of the contract. You also pay for the data/call services. If you buy a plan that does not include a phone, you pay much the same amount for the data/call services. Nothing is discounted. But we have been trained to look at the wrong things with phone service, and the carriers have distracted us for a decade with the hardware and software. Where we are getting royally screwed is on the cost of the services, and the locking in with a single carrier..

The oppsoite is true: the strength of the Euro is salvation for those smaller memebers, but you cannot lump large economies like Italy/Spain in with small ones like Greece, Portugual or the Eastern European members. Greece would be in desperate trouble if they left the Euro and reverted to the drachma. At the moment the EU is willing to keep supporting the Greeks with credit. If that ended, Greece would be on a strictly cash basis ionternationally and hard currency only- the drachma would be worthless and there would be great suffering in Greece. If you are a fan of euro federalist conspiracy theories, it is more likely that a devious plan would involve a continued push towards joint fiscal policy. In some ways, the EU has little choice in that, it is a natural progression. It is hard to do though when several mebers are not using the Euro as their currency. That is not the biggest obstacle. The biggest obstacle is the loss of sovereignty that a joint fiscal policy must entail.

Don't assume that all the good guys die, or even those that were dead at one point stay that way. It's a long and complex story, and much of it is yet to be told.

The 100% is not the amount switched from reliable sources to wind or solar or vice versa, the 100% refers to the amount of electricity that must be available 24/7 to maintain an industrial base. None of that can be uncertain. Duh. Why do you persist? Is this personal with you?
-
No. It doesn't mnater if the reliable source is fossil fuels or other reliabl;e 24/7 sources like hydro or nuclear. The equation is the same. You can discard your attempt at a strawman right there. I'm responding to the numerous monty16 posts that propose just that. 50/50, see above. Don't presume anything on my behalf, ta. There is plenty we can do, but switching large amounts of base capacity- the 100%- to wind and solar in lieu of rock solid 24/7 reliability is not one of those things we can or will do. If we are to entertain thoughts of maintaining ourselves as First World modern industrialized society, elecrical supply certainty is not optional. The best options for Canada IMO is to move away from coal, maximize the few remaining large scale hydro opportunities, and start building reactors again. Wind forecasting? Given that nobody can reliably tell us if it will rain or not tomorrow("60% chance of precipitation" forecasts are common), would you invest a few hundred million in a factory, here's hoping we'll have power for the late shift? Maybe we could issue balloons for factory workers to rub on their heads, generate a little static electrictiy to keep the lights running on calm evenings.

I predict Quebec will riot over any loss of protection, however small, to the trade barriers they have meticulously constructed to protect their economy, such as it is.

Absolute, blithering nonsense. Modern industrial societies do not exist with 50% of energy sources dependent on undependable power sources. End of.

Agreed, we should be unilingual French in Canada. -
It's not overwhelming anything, just a brief analysis of the factual reality of their pitching.\ Which part is incorrect? You must have strong pitching to sustain a playoff bound team. Do you think Dickey looked like a good pitcher last night? This season? Last season?

"The government-controlled CBC" tells Harper to back off
overthere replied to cybercoma's topic in Media and Broadcasting
It's worse than nothing. Do you have a factual refutation by the CBC that the commentators they present as non partisan are non partisan? That might be evidence. -
That is a very fundamental question, one that has to be addressed before any funding decisions are made. Personally, I see protection of society as the number one mission of the prison system. Of course, part of that priority is also safety of prison staff. In that regard, Corrections Canada does a pretty good job since you rarely hear of marauding gangs of escaped prisoners wreaking mayhem on the countryside.

Apparently the Conservative Party accused the CBC pf presenting partisan guests on their shows as unbiased observers. Is this the 'evidence' you refer to? -

"The government-controlled CBC" tells Harper to back off
overthere replied to cybercoma's topic in Media and Broadcasting
I wish somebody would order the CBC to stop making those relentlessly shitty programs they've been doing for decades. They are expensive, horrible and if they were wondering why nobody is watching...... First step for the government: change their business relationship with CBC to be the same as with Canada Post. No subsidy. Nothing. Produce somehting interesting and economically viable or fold. Simple business plan : current $1billion subsidy decreases $200 million per year down to zero by Year Five. -

and failed badly with the Alberta provincial election too. Not surprisingly, all the pollsters who were so confident on TV and radio interviews before the election were 'unavailable for comment' after they had failed so miserably. -

Oh, so now you agree it's about the money. Careful you don't get whiplash with all those sudden turns. -
Well, Henrciks had the same start as he did the first time: lucky luycky lucky. The rays hammered the ball and the Jays made some great defecive plays to keeo Hendricks from an early exit, again. But it is hard to criticize wins, however fortunate. Stroman had a brutal intro to the majors, when do you see him being ready? And Happ has spent his life in the minors for a reason........ We'll see in August.

First you manufacture a strawman, now you want me to dress it up, put on its makeup and go out on a date? You're the one who claims that several generations of children forcibly removed from their families, has no impact on those families or that culture. Go ahead and demonstrate that, I'll make some popcorn and settle in for a bit. -
Blue Jay Baseball Players Wearing Camouflage?
overthere replied to Big Guy's topic in Canada / United States Relations
I would say 'despair' is better. If the Jays don't mark Memorial Day with camo, they should not recognize Jackie Robinson Day either. Robinson was an African American. Toronto is not in Africa or America. For those that don't know of this wonderful MLB tradition.... Jackie Robinson was the first African American player to play on a MLB team, in 1947. He was not just an oustanding player, but a man of great character who rose above the racism. Every year for one game, every player on every team in Major League Baseball wears the same number-42- that Robinson wore in his career. It's a touching tribute and tradition. -
