I reckon First Nations would dispute that feds have any jurisdiction over casino development on their land..... A casino just outside Edmonton is on First Nations land and is the only one in the area that allows smoking (though in designated areas only). They grabbed and kept a good chunk of market share when they opened. The feds have no interest in getting involved, and the province backed off.

Good to see that the NDP learned from the Pat Martin fiasco to apologize big and apologize early.

"I see that the Oil Kings have won the WHL championship series against Portland, which is cool." I went to all three home games, the series went seven games and Edmonton won game 7 in Portland. It was the first time in the history of the Western Hockey League that a team has won a seventh game on the road.. It was an incredible series, with several big momentum changes and distinctly different styles. "I really hope this jerk never gets signed by the Leafs. " You're safe for now. Dion Phaneuf alone fills the Arsehole Quota for the Leafs. I wonder if Dion will get voted Most Overrated Player in the NHL again by the other platers?

"Opinions that the CFL is a superior game is highly debate-able. Of course that'll get us no where because it's all about personal tastes. I personally find 3 down football abysmally boring. " The NFL puts me to sleep. Teams grind it out with four downs to get their 10 yards. Worse, the pace of the games are glacial with long long commercial breaks throughout, =and it gets worse at the end of the half and the game. The CFL has far more action and are ultimately just more entertaining, partly because there is much more risk taking, and of course the players are less skilled so there are more mistakes.

Completely untrue. Canada is officially multicultural. There is no single Canadian culture. Perhaps you've noticed some people in Quebec who have fought long and hard to preserve their culture. Ottawa has acknowledged the reality of the existence of First Nations people (recently) and permitted a large degree of autonomy and self governance. I know that cahps a lot of white asses, but oh well. Perhaps you are thinking of the USA in regard to a monoculture. Of course, they also enbraced slavery and the eradication of Indians for a long time too. We do too with regard to First Nations, just a bit less brutally. Please try to stay with the program and celebrate our national diversity. It applies to First Nations too. -
They do have a NDP consituency office in AB: Linda Duncan, NDP member for Edmonton Strathcona. They issue torrents of outrage regularly. As for Tom, I don't know if he should resign. He should be resigned about finishing third next election though.

Good idea. In the early 90s, when Alberta was in pretty dire economic straits, Klein trimmed the civil service pretty dramatically and nobody outside the accountant who counted up union dues noticed. Klein also made one major reform to welfare eligilbility: if you are employable and do not have dependents, you get nothing. If you were not employavle because you have no skills, the province paid for training. If you had dependents, you got support. If you were not employable because of disability, you went on a different support programs. It cut the welfare rolls in half. The people who left took jobs they disdained before that.

Guns and police are out of control in Alberta? Thanks for the tip, I'd better stay inside for the rest of the year. I wouldnt want to be murdered in a streetcar by the cops. Oh wait, that was Toronto. -

I see. So the premise of this thread, that he was going to eliminate tips and guarantee to pay his staff more per hour than the norm was just a lie? Because you cannot have it both ways. If the profit sharing promise is true, there would have to be wage cuts when there are no profits. Personally, I doubt that many staff in this income bracket can afford that risk. -

Who do you think put the First Nations on reserves in the first place? Their 'segregation' was not their choice. Though it's easier to kill people when they are off by themselves. First Nations people are willing to be equal to Canadians, just not on terms and conditions that you dictate and have dictated for many generations. Assimilation is genocide by another word.. We don't require any other Canadians to assimilate at all, yet we demand it of of First Nations. But no no no no that is not racist at all.. -
It would make no difference at all on the amount of hydro/nuclear/coal/fossil fuel plants that would need to be built and run. what on earth are you talking about? I noticed you have not tried to refute the argument that no matter what you generate via wind or solar, you still need to have 100%+ capacity available with nuclear/coal. etc etc That means you have to build them for billions, and you also have to build all the associated transmission lines at more billions. And no, you cannot turn on massive genertaing systems like you turn a light switch off and on.

I also wonder what it will cost not to settle. I don't think the settlement involves just money or land. Perhaps a bit of sincere respect would go a long way too. -
Harper Government Ignoring Aboriginals

No, if Harper wanted to treat all the same, there would be far more draconian measures like unilaterally abrogating all treaties, repealing the Indian Act(as Trudeau Sr tried to do and failed), and refusing to speak to anybody in the AFN. Once they get this little buntoss over Atleo out fo the way, they'll be back at the table. Instead, the education bill and plenty o'cash is another step in the pretty longterm (started 25 years ago or thereabouts) policies of devolution of power to First Nations governments. This trend is totally obvious in the North. The physical federal presence has shrunk dramatically, the territorial govts are treading water, and all the fed money has gone directly to another level- First Nations govts. Its really a big deal there, local First Nations govt is a major employer in many places now. Its the same in the provinces, but city folk don't see it so much because nearly all of the change comes outside cities. -

Because it is a racist and divisive to assume that because one negotiation faltered and the other side fired their negotiator that the problems should be dismissed and never be addressed again. Let me add childish to those adjectives. We'll leave shameful in place. I'll remind you that the current situation comes after 150 years of broken promises, treaty defaults and overt attempts to both isolate and destroy the people who we took this land from. So far they persistently refuse to simply die. I know that breaks a few hearts here, but oh well. -
Harper Government Ignoring Aboriginals

Its an example that contradicts your claim that he is treating aborginals the same as other Canadians. Until now, other PMs have resisted their responsibility to reform education in First Nations. That is smply untrue. Conditions on reserves and in First Nations communities vary wildly. Some have excellent leadership, some have terrible leadership. None of them suffer from leaders as badly as the cartoon playing now in Toronto. Thats a publicly funded cartoon, innit? -

How then do you explain the $1.9 billion recently committed to aborginal education? He didn't offer an extra nickel to 'other Canadians' for education. -
And I agree.

It goes a little deeper... The Trial serves Tywin in that it demonstrates to everybody who is in control, true control- somehting which needs clarification in these circumstances. Cersei is at the side, Tymion has publicly stepped aside, Jaime has little influence. Who does that leave as a threat to the throne as represented by Tywin? Could it be the smartest and smallest guy left in the room? Tyrion has demonstrated that he is much more than a drunken lover of whores, he saved Kings Landing and in the process saved the Lannister Empire. Tywin has no desire to be obligated, Tyrion is a future threat to Tywin. A show trial accomplishes a couple of Tywins goals. Of course, now Tyrion has refused to play along and won't take relegation to the Wall lying down after all. That is a gamechanger

Harper has been the Prime Minister for 8 years. Does his wife know how much he hates women? When do you think he is going to reveal that secret prolife agenda? Like, give me a date. -
With respect, none of that matters unless every producer can guarantee they will produce a specific amount of electricity at specific times. Not hope to produce, want to produce, or would feel really good about their contribution if only the sun wopuld shine and the wind would blow- but guarantee to produce. Lets say the total demand of industry and residential use is a system capacity or demand figure of 100%. What with everyday problems like storms/outages, scheduled maintenace to large generators, line losses, and unplanned breakdowns of generating stations you must have a excess generating capacity that takes the supply requirement to 110% of total system demand. Lets say plenty of ordinary folk buy solar and wind systems and using net metering sell it back to the grid. Lets say they can meet 10% of the required grid supply amount with small scale renewable energy generation. How does that affect the number? The answer is: not at all really. You still must have 110% available 24/7. Period. That means that the 10% renewable added is simply rediundant generation. Its actually worse, since the increased amount of generation inevitably means additional transmission capacity- also not needed- must be added to the system. So adding in the 10% provided by renewables would not affect the building of big nuclear, coal, gas or hydro plants at all.(unless there is a dramatic decrease in consumption) Ah say the proponents- the people using net netering to add 10% also take away that 10% from the 100% need...... But that does not work either unless the net metering providers also make a second cast iron guarantee: that they never, ever buy a speck of energy fromn the grid they feed. if they use any, then you need the same 110% non-renewable generating capacity. It is a really expensive redundancy.

It's the same 'cheap political choice' wholeheartedly adopted by Mulroney for a few years and by Chretien and Martin- those well known Conservatives- for about 15 years. All three personally were prolifers, at least two of them pretty strong Catholics. If you are pro choice and thought it through, you'd know that legislating this issue, or even giving it airtime in Parliament, is not to your advantage. -
Is Tipping A Broken Business Model

I find it unlikely that he cares much about any imbalance between front and back of house earnings, other than the usual need to retain employees in both.. What his major concern will be is profitability. Personally, I would be very reluctant to believe any books at first glance, they are incredibly easy to manipulate. What you described is not profit sharing. The staff are paid wages, there is no mention of bonus or shares in the business. I would not expect there would be, unless the employees are as preapred to take wage cuts in lean times as they would expect more money in good times in niormal profit sharing schemes. -

My point is that servers in Parksville are unlikely to get any tips from the large number of elderly people in Parksville anyway. The elderly are notoriously poor tippers, right up there with Germans and Australians. I already said that once, what is it you don't understand?
