Is Tipping A Broken Business Model
overthere replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Business and Economy
The key word in this post is 'Parksville'. Ever been there? The avergae age there is 'deceased'. It's a town packed with very, very old people from somewhere else. They don't tip anyway. -
Is Tipping A Broken Business Model
overthere replied to WestCoastRunner's topic in Business and Economy
Wages are only part of the profit equation. His labour costs (or so he says) will be higher than his competitors, but his real estate and food costs won't change. That business model will increase profit, while he gets to pretend to be a champion of the working man. Nicely done! Oh, and his servers will make less and some of them will make much less. That means they'll go work somewhere else. Hmmm. -
Reporting temporary foreign worker program abuse
overthere replied to eyeball's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
No, I'm not suggesting anything of the sort with government stepping in. The employers have to recruit, pay for the workers to fly from their homes and back, and pay them while they are here. In many cases here, employers provide rental accomodation for the foreign workers. There is no other choice. Skilled workers often live in camps, because much of the skilled industrial work is where the resources are, obviously . You're not really paying attention though, because almost nobody here pays minimum wage. The competition for labour is pretty fierce. Teh unemployment rate is under 5% , which is too low. Inflation follows. -

No, I do not accept that Alberta is extreme right, by any measure. Both major cities are led by progressive mayors, one of them a brown Muslim. The young mayor of Edmonton is hardly right wing. The last longterm mayor of Edmonton was Jewish and likely the best mayor in generations. A previous mayor(Jan Reimer) was somewhere to the left of Mao. The last premier was a centrist woman. All the final three candidates for the PCs in the last leadership campaign were centrist Red Tories. The leader of the provincial Liberals is another brown man, likely Hindu but I'm not sure and nobody cares. Alberta is a centrist province politically. They spend gobs of money on right wing programs like public health, public education and public infrastructure programs. Your turn. -
It's not really all about the cost of various types of energy generation, though cost is important. A bigger factor is reliability of source. If you don't have utterly reliable 24/7 electricity to power industry and residential needs, without significant failure, brownout or or interruption your economy automatically becomes Third World. If you'd like to see firsthand what that means, go to a Third World country. If you wish, cross the ocean in an amphibious bicycle if flying in a jet fuelled aircraft is repugnant. Lack of rellaible electricioty is a prime factor in why many African nations(for example) have no industry. Why would anybody invest if they have no idea if they can run a factory? And wind/solar are just not reliable enough to be primary sources.

What a load of utterly uniformed crap. Getting an abortion in Albwerta is not in the least difficult. For the most part- in urban centers- the former Morgenthale clinics are under contract to Alberta Health Services. Alberta residents simply have to show up to be provided service. Looks like New Brunswick is the hillbilly center of Canada. -

exactly the problem. I've been on the family doctor waitlist for over 2 years. Women need 2 referrals though? Gender inequity aside, I noticed you did not object to the idea of retroactive abortions for teenagers. Nobody with experience with teenagers could object to that. -

A company like McDonalds does not need to hire anyone foreign. The skill level is not that high. And all you are getting at is that a company wants to cut costs wherever they can. My former employer replaced in house teams with contractors to save money. Lower wages and do not have to pay out benefits. If these employers can resource a foreign country for workers, then they can try in Canada first. I am sure there are plenty of people willing to do those jobs that are already citizens of this country. Tim is correct. Some employers really need workers from somewhere else. You are wrong in comparing hiring local contractors to replace local in house staff with hiring outside the country because nobody in Canada will take the jobs. It's not the same thing. Where I live and where I suspect TimG lives- there aren't enough people to fill the available jobs. Period. The unemployment rate is under 5%. Housing vacancy rate hovers around 1%. Hello inflation!!! In your comparison with contracting out, there are a surplus of people quailified for the jobs- in house(you) and outsourced(contractors). -
But they fired the Leafs assistants. The assistants should blame themselves. They should have gotten jobs with the Oilers. Assistance coaches there have lifetime tenure with no relationship between results and job security. Meanwhile, I've been attending the Edmonton Oil Kings/Portland Winterhawks Western Hockey League final. It is the third year in a row these two teams have met in the WHL final. Tremendous, inspirational hockey games. Portland won the first two games with their high speed all out attack style. (portland had a recent record of 42-3 entering this final round!!!) The third game was a nailbiter won by Edmonton. Edmonton has won the next two by shutting down the potent high powered Hawks offence and scoring opportunistic goals. Game 6 tomorow in Edmonton. I'll be there. These young men play like their hair is on fire, every shift. NHL take note. Series winner goes to the Memorial Cup.

Yes, you did. Your post was a commentary about oil supply in the US. The Obama non-decision has nothing to do with that.

Given how hard it is and how long it takes to get an appt with a GP much less a specialist, the fetus would be a teenager by the time the procedure was done. -
Does anyone here think this man should go to jail?
overthere replied to a topic in The Rest of the World
The UK has some odd legislation, experiments in social engineering. The Anti Social Behaviour Order- ASBO- in an example. It's a civil enforcement measure(and there is a companion criminal measure). Some of the things that can result in an ASBO: abandoning cars arson begging casteism dangerous driving defecating/urinating in public disturbing the peace dogging (exhibitionistic public sex) drug dealing/consumption of controlled recreational drugs drunken behaviour fare evasion homophobia intimidation littering/fly tipping/dog fouling loitering (with intent) noise pollution paedophilia racism rioting rudeness smoking in public places spitting stealing/mugging/shoplifting urban exploration vandalism/criminal damage/graffiti -
Jobs Lost During the Recession Have Not Returned
overthere replied to cybercoma's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
There is a third choice, which is to move to a place in Canada where there are jobs. AB and SK come to mind. Like so many things, unemployment is regional. Note to potential economic refugees coming to the West: if you have no skills, you will get a job but it probably won';t pay well(though it is always possible you'll get an unskilled job for $25/hour working long hours with loadfs of overtime. It happens. These jobs are almost always dirty , uncomfortable, remote and involve living in a camp). The only difference between that and your situation at home is the first part, where you get a job. -
Whaaaaat? Trudeau Sr did nothing of the sort. Morgenthaler was jailed while Trudeau was PM. The key court decsions came in 1988 and 1993, long after Trudeau left office.

Its not the only issue, but it is a pointless thing to do here and now unless he had some reason to needlessly alienate some people who might have voted for him. This is an issue with an endless shelf life, and he'll pay a price for his entire career. Nothing is ever forgotten or forgiven in our age. -
You are one of the many that thinks that the KeystoneXL decision by Obama has something to do with oil supply or the environment or decisions by a Nebraska court. It doesn't.

The kidnappers were Muslims, true enough. But that is not the real problem now. The problem now and for a long time is the utter corruption of the Nigerian state, which is not formally an Islamic state. The govt ignored this because it doesn't give a solitary shit about the common people. If one of those children was the daughter of a general, the entire region would be swarming with Nigerian troops. Nigeria routinely sends their miliatry on peacekeeping missions in Africa and elsewhere, where are they now?

Nice try. Pro lifers have been trying for decades to get any kind of law regarding abortion on the books. Why? Because laws can be challenged over and over from multiple angles, and who knows you may find a sympathetic judge somewhere somehow. If nothing else, it keeps the issue in the public eye and in the media. Without any law. there is nothing to fight in the courts. Regarding Trudeaus pronouncement on the requirement to be prolife, I don't think he has thought this through.... He can whip candidates and he can whip MPs, but he cannot whip voters. What is the point of alienating all those people a year before an election? There are many Liberals VOTERS that are mildly prolife. There are many undecided voters or swing voters who are mildly prolife. Why force them into taking a side on this topic, a topic that does cross party lines? Blunder. -
You don't need a companion. I have never felt unsafe anywhere in India. The food is wonderful and .... cheap They have the largest train system in the world, good for long distance travel. They have also developed a reasonable system of airports in state capitals, easy way to get around too. Buses are slow and packed usually, and the roads are not great anyway. The one tip I would give to a India newbie is this: limit your time in Indian cities to a minimum. They do have some interesting places and activities, but they tend to be reqally noisy and busy. Instead, I suggest planning a trip around some of the world heritage sites, most of which are rural or small city locations. Hampi, Ajanta/Ellora, Trichy, Thanjavur etc etc etc. Beaches , jungles, the Kerala highlands, Jaisalmer, Ranakpur and many other places are incredible .

BC Teachers Getting Screwed...Again
overthere replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
"Umm, who else gets competence reviews every 5 years? Doctors? Nope. Nurses? Nope. Police men and women? Nope. The Alberta Teachers' association has the best interests of kids and teachers. Tecahers who do wrong are disciplined. I think you need to get some facts before posting neo-liberal nonsense." Doctors are , for the most part, self employed. If they are staff they would almost certainly have evaluations. Nurses? ye4s, of course they have annual evaulations. Engineers, mostly employees, yep. Lawyers are mostly employees, so yep again. Everybod else in the private sector? Pretty much yep. I'm self employed for years now, but when I was an employee my job, salary increases and bonus money were all defined defined by my performance as measured by annual evaluations. Teachers are about 99% employees. They get evaulated now in Alberta, but the whole process is an acknowledged joke. -
Nigeria is, overall, one of the worst places on earth to live. Despite having generated many billions of oil royalties over several decades, it remains a profound shit hole with no infrastructure, weak public institutions, rampant corruption and a population that mostly wants to leave. The Islamist rebels who stole these children are more or less in control of that area, mainly because the government chooses not to care. Tribal tensions are a big contributor to how much help they will get, which is none. The one and only thing the parents have going for them is international horror at the lack of swift action by the govt. In the meantime, their children are being raped, brutalized and sold. Any wonder remaining at why people emigrate to countries like Canada, where there is rule of law?

That makes no sense. If the pilot was intent on killing Chinese people, he'd have flown the aircraft into central Beijing, not the middle of the ocean. Australia is far from reliant on tourists. Their economy is based on resources and they do very well indeed off that sector. Traveling to Australia is expensive and travelling there is really expensive. It makes little sense to have Canada fly ponderous search and rescue aircraft all the way to Western Australia to look for an ill defined target. Search and rescue is done with low and slow planes, and the professionals looking now don't even have any real ideas on where to look. What would we add to that?

The US has had laws against exportation of their own domestic oil for decades, though that may change. They don't have laws against re- exportation of foreign oil. They may be large producers soon, but they are also massive consumers. The growth of their economy is dependent on energy supplies, so long term secure supply is critical. Already there are several intiatives to get CDN oil to foreign market via the US, though not through Keystone XL.
