Law and Order in America
overthere replied to Scotty's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I don't know what you're talking about and I suspect we have that in common. The Criminal Code in Alberta is exactly the same Criminal Code in other provinces. In what way is Alberta Leading anything, except sending money to other places? -
Florida woman granted asylum in Canada
overthere replied to Peter F's topic in Canada / United States Relations
coercion and concept are irrelevant in 'sexual assault on a minor' cases. The deed itself is what matters. It's not called statutory rape in the courts any more. -
Florida woman granted asylum in Canada

There are million upon millions of people in jails worldwide who are in prisons for reasons that are not crimes in Canada. Anybody convicted under Sharia law for example. Would you support them as refugees too? I'm not trying to be provocative, just gauging the extent of your outrage.. And you are wrong wrong wrong in your reasoning. Statutory rape is a crime in Canada, It is a crime in Florida too. She is guilty of committing that crime. Them's the facts. -
The scene with the Hound and Arya at the burned out farm was terrific. " So, what's your name then?" Danerys is undergoing a transformation from girl to warrior leader and perhaps Queen of the Seven Kingdoms.. It takes time. The scene where she backs off her decision in front of Jormont is a wonderful bit of writing.

If the sentence is unjust, doesn't she have access to an exhaustive appeal process in USA? -

"Except of course that royalty is subject to pretty much the same laws that you are" only some of the laws.... Ever wonder how the Queen is so extremely rich despite never having had a real job in her whole life- and her entire family seems to be a pack of layabouts? I figured it out years ago..... She travels the world in a big private aircraft. She sails the seas in a giant yacht. She never goes through immigration. Her ship and plane never get searched. She never has to take her shoes off at airport security. And so on....... major, major drug dealer. -

BC teachers want 16% over four years, plus plenty more. Inflation around 2% per annum, salary demands are double that. Seems fair. -

Under the law in Florida, Canada and in much of the planet, a minor cannot give consent to sex with an adult, because they are minors. I'm sure you've heard of this concept, it's similar to the one where a minor cannot e party to a contract. It does not matter if the sex occurred once or a thousand times, she is guilty of stautory rape in Florida. If the kid had been 14 years old instead of 16, she'd have been guilty of statutory rape in Canada too. His tolerance for wheat products is not clear from any of the media coverage. What is egregious is not the crime she committed, but the ridiculous sentence. -
Pro Life? Then Don't Run Under Liberal Banner
overthere replied to Big Guy's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
pro choice=no laws on abortion? He is going to have a tough time selling himself as a visionary leader on that, since every Prime Minister(including Harper) since Mulroney has done exactly that: nothing. No law. Same thing with MPs not being able to vote their conscience. That is news... how? -
Wait and see. It is a major accomplishment to win a majority in India, and defeat the mighty Congress Party while doing it. Indias biggest problem is not popualtion or environment or the economy overall, it is rampant orruption and that includes every level of government including the highest levels. Bright young people aspire to the civil service in India(which is massive) not because they can apply their brains but because it can ultimately be the best paid job through kickbacks. That has to change, and it is Modis great challenge. For the record, IMO India is the greatest example of democracy in the history of democracy. It is an incredibly diverse place, with hundreds of languiages spoked(about 22 official languages), may ethnic groups, races, religions and very different cultures in a large country. Depsite their many differences, their elections are an important part of all cultures and the process/results are widely respected by all. It should be impossible to govern, but somehow it gets done.

Internet Reviews: "They paid and stayed. We checked."
overthere replied to August1991's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
Many hotels in the Third World have no internet presence of their own, no websites or online booking, sometimes no phone and cash only is ommon. But some do get reviewed extensively on sites and guides like Lonely Planet. It has an interesting effect on both their business and that of other places nearby, since people just show up based on that guide reference and expect the same great experience and low price that got them reciommended in the first place. First, they are always more exepsnive since they have so many people showing up. Second, their service will almost always be worse than the reviews- reviews that may have been accurate at the time. But with the increased flow of traffic, the owners cannot keep up. Finally, other hotels nearby often up their game to get a share of the increased traffic, and often do not increase prices. So- in small places in India or elsewhere, pick a goodlooking place next door to the one recommended- it will likely be cheaper and better! -

What's the Big Deal About Government Debt?

The single biggest reason is that interest rates dropped which reduced expenses. Second biggest reason was that revenue jumped because NAFTA kicked in and revenues increased. Third reason was that the feds transferred costs to the provinces. Magic. -
Florida woman granted asylum in Canada

I wish everybody would stop saying it was consensual sex. It cannot be consensual if one of the parties is legally a child. I'm not saying the sentence is just, but the humping cannot be consensual. -
Florida woman granted asylum in Canada
overthere replied to Peter F's topic in Canada / United States Relations
"a 30 year sentence for consentual sex is ludicrous. As noted, this would not even be a crime in Canada." actually it is a sentence for statutory rape. That's also a crime in Canada, but the defitnions of what constitutes the crime differ -

It's an interesting case. On one hand, Canada usually turns down these refugee claims because the US is a country where people of crimes have access to due process of law. Deserters from the US military, for example, have tried many times to get refugee status but are almost always denied. She broke a law, went through the legal system, a sentence was imposed. The sentence is ridiculous of course, but it can be argued that she also has recourse to due process during an appeal process that is available to anybody in the US. Canada and US have had some battles over extradition. It will be interesting to see if the US even tries to extradite given the nature of the 'crime'. She isn't exactly Charles Ng after all. -
Harper Government Ignoring Aboriginals

"Why are there good reservations where people thrive and poor ones where they do not? Leadership and proximity to jobs." why are there shitty white governments and decent white governments? Lots of jobs in Toronto, but look what can happen. You may also have a clue to your question when you look at where the reserves are located.... In the West, they are generally found on the worst land in the region. Bad farmland, and 'given' to them(actually they have no title to the land) at a time when farmland quality and quantity was the definition of wealth. The best land was reserved for white settlers. The Indians got the leftovers, and the Indian Act has told them ever since what they cannot do with it. Out of sight, out of mind, and perhaps they'll just all die and clear up this little problem by themselves. Oh, and lets strip their communities of all their children for a few generations, send them to culture factories for their childhoods, then send them back and see how they do? It's a fucking disgrace, our national disgrace. The news get worse folks: they have survived that. Wounded and not in great shape, but they survived. Now what? Hey, let's force them to become just like us! Given the evidence, that's about the last thing any First Nations person would want for themselves or their kids. -
The Magnanimity of Sudanese Islamic Courts
overthere replied to cybercoma's topic in The Rest of the World
This woman is the daughter of a Muslim man and a Christian woman. The man left his family when the woman was an ifant, and she was raised as a Christian by her mother.. Sharia law requires that all children adopt the religion of their father. It also requires that women can never marry outside their faith and the penalty is death. This is the law this woman is condemned under: she was nominally a Muslim and 'married' a Christian. That marriage never happened under the law, so having onbe child and being pregnant with another means she is automatically adulterous too. Muslim men are permitted to marry women outside their faith. -
What's the Big Deal About Government Debt?
overthere replied to socialist's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
The reckoning for countires like Canada comes when interest rates rise sharply- which they inevitably will. The only options then will be higher taxes, less services or both. If the debt is lower , the impact on the economy is far less. I don't agree that having a sovereign currency delays anything, it likely speeds up the crisis. The value of any currency is subjective and depends in great part on the confidence of your trading partners globally. When they think you are unable to pay your bills in a currency that has any value, your local money is immediately devalued. Hello Argentina. Greece and Sp[ain are very different, since both are on a shared Euro basis. The Euro is backed by some heavy hiotters who cannot afford to see the Euro fail. They could easily afford the monetary cost of seeing Greece fail, but the political hit would not be profitable. Germany is steering that boat to their benefit. They don't mind Greece floundering since the cost of keeping Greece afloat is not nearly as bad as the cost of devaluing the Euro dramatically. Germany is keenly interested in keeping the value of the Euro lowish compared to other cuirrencies since they benefit greatly for their exports. Germany will do anything to keep from going back to the German Mark, since the immediate effect would be that their exports would become uber-expensive . But a collapse of the Spanish economy is a crisis of a whole new level of magnitude. I would also not group Japan with the others, they have their own set of serious problems, some of their own making. Their demographics are a time bomb. -
What's the Big Deal About Government Debt?
overthere replied to socialist's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
"Let me make this clear: If the federal government raises my taxes now by $500, then I will have $500 less to pay down my mortgage - or $500 less to leave to my daughters. If the federal government instead borrows and doesn't raise my taxes now, my daughters will have $500 more when they receive their inheritance. Whatever the federal government does: borrow or tax, It makes no difference to my daughters." Why did you leave out the third scenario, which is that the govt neither borrows or raises taxes? -

BC Teachers Getting Screwed...Again
overthere replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
well, no they would still seek their Msters. Edmonton Public(and many other boards) will actually pay for 2/3 of your salary while you attend school full time to obtain your Masters degree. They'll also hold your job for you while you do it. Not any job, the one you had bfore you went back to school. Then they'll pay you more to do the exact same job when you return. -
