I do agree that "collateral damage" does create more terrorists, and that revenge is a part of their culture, for some "not all" but lets just say your right, of those 250 that have died as Collateral damage, it would have created just 500 additional recruits.....there has to be more to it than that, 500 additional recruits does not equate their current numbers or their successes...... Nor does it take into account how many insurgents have died in those same attacks......which is more than 500 , if you are to believe the news or the reports from other coalition forces that have done BDA (Bomb Damage assessments) .....which have proven that Airstrikes, are reducing enemy strength faster than their recruiting programs can replenish. Nor does it take into account ISIL crimes, i mean your equation must be a double edge sword right, how many Kurds has ISIL actions recruited, to name just one of the persecuted groups that ISIL has created... I'm sure it is more than just 500 , i am guessing as i don't have any source.... Collateral damage is tragic, but it is a part of warfare, there has never been a clean war in which only combatants die.....never has been never will be....Sure there are rules to limit it, but there are no rules to eliminate it....that is a impossible task...

Canadian history is full of Canadians who have taken up causes around the world, some more famous than others, The history channel has made several series on this very topic, Such as the Canadian who flew for Britain with a wooden leg during WWII, or Israels first pilots were from around the globe, including Canada, and some of their ground commanders were Canadian, they have fought in almost every conflict, for almost every side, including Germany, Russia and Japan during WWII... they fought under many flags, not all of them were fighting for money , but ideals, morals and values some good some bad.... My point here is it takes a special kind of person to take action "any type of action" for their beliefs, ideals.. to risk it all for what they believe in.....Not everyone does...Canada does not hold the keys for "Good Causes safe", nor does her soldiers....I think that if those causes follow Canadian values, follow our basic moral compass settings, then they should also not be forgotten and remembered some how....be it in our history books, or a trip down some highway.....their sacrifice may not have been for Canada herself, but rather for another good cause for another nation in need..... As a former soldier i'm sure those Canadian soldiers that have taken that long trip from Trenton to Toronto before young Mr Gallagher would not mind sharing the highway of hero's for his last trip...I think his motives, and intentions were in the same place as our soldiers are....I Think we owe him that for his former service in the very least....

You forgot to mention that , the very same Military base that once was a Republican Guard base now belongs to the government of IRAQ, that was created under inter national law, who has the rights to create their own laws and up hold them.....Last time i checked the Sunni's did not own any territory within IRAQ, nor do they own they're own country, but rather they are citizens of IRAQ, who come under control of the Iraqi government.... How can this not be an occupation ? Has Iraq created a Sunni state, have they redefined their borders in any way? Originally they are Iraqi's citizens, who happen to practice the Sunni faith...there is no such thing as Sunni Territory that is recognised by inter national law... If we were to follow your premise, you could declare your home and land the new country of "BIG GUYS", refusing to follow any Canadian law, pay taxes, and kill who ever you disliked because that was you wish, and it would according to you not be considered an Occupation, because you fit in with the local populace.....I'm not an expert on law, but i am 100 % positive that the Canadian government and all her depts, would not be long in acting , to reclaim your new country, and restore Canadian law and order.... You may of even given credence to Israelis land claims.....and yet the rest of the world still calls it an occupation..... What is ISIL, a bunch of pissed off Iraqis, who are tired of living under the new Iraqi government, because their class use to run the country.....so they have taken up arms, it is a group that uses terror to achieve its aims...it is a group that is ethically cleansing everything in its path to create their own twisted version of paradise. How can you tell them apart, very carefully....which is why this type of warfare is so difficult....

I get it, suck it up butter cup.....put a brave face on so we don't look weak in front a bunch of terrorist.....personally I don't give a rat ass what they think, they have already long ago decided what that is.....nothing the west does or does not do will change that.....Canadian citizens are concerned about bring 25,000 refugees to this country.....can you blame them.....everyone of us has a TV , violence is on every night, with the prime bad guys being Muslim terrorists..... I don't agree what those young punks did to that women or mosque.....that was a cowardly attack....But telling all Canadians to suck it up is bull shit....the majority is changings its mind about them coming here.....time to face that issue.....

CTV and CBC both have reported that one of the dead terrorist had a Syrian passport and was reported to have been omitted to Greece through and with the refugees.....UN does the pre screening does it not.....unless you have a source that states something else....

F-35 Purchase Cancelled; CF-18 replacement process begins
Army Guy replied to Moonbox's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
What about out governments obligations to ensure our security ? -
Today I was in town getting some repairs down to my truck, had a chance to talk to a lot of different people in the dealership.....these people are now second guessing our nation intent about letting 25,000 Syrians in the country.....you call them lazy haters.....you say they are repeating misinformation....was Paris misinformation, was the downing of a Russian plane misinformation, ........was the fact that one of those men had been screened by the UN, and let into Europe....the new is full of information every night....most of it is not misinformation.....but fact....

Canadian Vietnam War Veterans Remembered
Army Guy replied to bush_cheney2004's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Lets not forget that it was a US Marine Vietnam Vet, that stood guard at our national war memorial after Cpl Cyrillo was gunned down, and our country went into lock down....and the memorial stood unguarded.... While not all Canadians feel the need to honor US vets, I sir have had the honor to share the battle field with US soldiers, and have no problems calling them brothers in arms....and would gladly do it all over again.... -
Try and bend the pin after you placed it through the fabric, you don't have to bend it much but it will help, also pin it through several times, leaving the end buried in material...to avoid it poking you..... Burying a poppy helps our legions out, for many legions this is there main source of revenue.....legions ...who intern helps our vets and many other members in smaller communities out in many ways.... I just want to say thank you, for helping us to keep our promise to never forget those that have fallen in the service of their country....

If any de escalation was being done it is not made apparent in the videos, with the exception of someone going to get the tazer....as you say.... from what I saw, I see dozens of cops not doing anything, it is complete caus....it looks like no one is in charge, it looks like they the rest of the cops are more than happy to take rambos lead....Am I an expert on cops tactics.....no....What I do know is military tactics, and seen more than my share of situations such as this.....I can tell you not many of those cops know what's going on, nor what they are suppose to do....they are not working as a team....but one big cluster fuck.... and when confusion rains, shit like this happens..... You say the suspect attacked.....not true.....he moved forward, and not in a fast deliberate move, because the way the doorway is made, the suspect was still behind the driver seat at the time of the shooting....he still had about 6 ft to negotiate then make a turn down a small set of steep stairs....the suspect distance from the officer did not warrant a shot fired....He panicked and you know it.....listen to the audio file 3 quick shots, and he had a clear view of the suspect, the inside of the car was lite.....at a distance of less than 25 feet at the max.....HOW could he miss....these are aimed shoots.....even air force cooks could hit a target with a 9 mm pistol at 25 feet...."To put some perspective into this my pickup is 20 ft long" and it only has a 6 ft box.... Trust me when I say if you can not fake being hit by a 9mm, id you do you deserve an acting award....I was in the the same tent, Big ass tents (BAT) as they called them in KAF, when someone cleaning his pistol "so he says", in a few tents over shot one of my comrads in the lower back.....no faking there.....we all knew he had been hit with a round, we heard the round strike skin and bone, we saw him fly off his bed, we saw the pain he was in.....we knew he had been shot right away..... You say it would have been hard to see the suspect, your wrong....try it look out one of your windows at night with the lights on.....can you see clearly outside, no you can't........ but go outside and look into the light window from 25 feet and you can see clearly who or what is inside....the suspect would not know where the police officer was.....but the officer knew exactly where the suspect was...... Cop's must pass a yearly firearms qual.....and 18 % is NOT the Passing mark.....I get it the stress level is not there, it's a day on the range....which is why we train, and why the pass mark is well above 18 %.... so even a basic cop can hit a target at 25 feet....and if they can't one should be taking some more time on the ranges.... At 25 feet you see everything, the entrance hole, the splash of the round into the sand, the flex of the target....if you want me to believe he did not see the rounds hit the suspect then his eyes were closed....which might explain why he had to fire 9 times.....he had to have seen the target go down, slump onto to floor.....he had to have seen the reaction to being struck by bullets in some form..... No cops are trained to shoot for the center of mass just like we are, because it is the much larger target, easier to hit.... And if cops are worrying about getting sued for shooting someone then we have a much bigger problem don't we.....And while there are bad cops, like there is bad soldiers, I am not trying to paint them all with the same brush , just Rambo here in this video. He was not acting professionally, tell me do you think the Toronto PD is using this as what to do for future trainees, or are they looking at this as an embarrassing mishap.....well he has been charged with murder has he not.....do you think the Toronto PD shooting investigators cleared him, how did the prosecutors office press charges without evidence . They should be very upset, this could have been in any part of Toronto, to any one of our kids.....for several reasons, restore trust in the PD, get cops like this off the streets, and send a message the police dept does not have the license to kill , it has the responsibility to serve and protect.....no where does it say, piss me off and i'll kill your ass.... which is my point, SERVE and PROTECT.....

De-escalation should be the first option always...it is the common sense approach....how many times did we take this type of training before going overseas, every time we went to Yugo it was the same thing over and over, shoot or don't shoot, most of the videos we watched were police training videos....Never did we walk on to a situation wpns drawn , start shooting and we were in a combat zone.....Access the situation, find out what happened, talk to those involved, De escalate if possible....Use common sense.......then follow your ROE's..... No common sense used here, this cop goes from zero to killing in record time, and yet there are are lot of officers on the scene just walking around like everything is fine, under control, like they were in the park walking a dog..........which i find odd, shit even after the first three shoots most are not even armed or have pulled their wpns.....it's like they are shocked that shots were fired...This has got to tell you something about the mood.... Where is the Chain of Command.....all these cops and nobody is in charge....that has to be strange even a private knows that, it is trained into us in the very beginning of training "SOMEONE NEEDS TO TAKE CHARGE" ....instead they let rambo continue on his power trip, or how was it put "compile or die" speech .....note that none of the other officers are checking out the car when the suspect is fully engaged up front....it was like i said everything was normal they were waiting for the tazer.....then Rambo starts to flex his shit..... No one is checking, is they're any else in there? is there another access piont , The reason i ask is this it would have been one more piece of the puzzle, to confirm they is no hostage would mean they could have locked this down wait for ERT to arrive, along with the negotiator ....a group that is trained in this type of situation.....Just a point of note Toronto ERT are proud of their resolution ratings, 97 % are done without shoots being fired.....or so says their web site...meaning Rambo missed another option he could have used..... My biggest issue here is 9 shots......OK it's night i get that, but this is a police officer which is familiar with his own side arm, atleast... i hope, might be 20 25 feet away, he has a clear line of sight, the car is light inside, So he can clearly see his target.....so why , why so many bullets.....Shit a monkey can throw a ball of shit 25 feet and hit moving targets, seen it at the zoo......but this cop can not put down one teenager with 9 rounds and a tazer.....You said how would you know if you hit the target.....trust me when i say you hit someone with a bullet they are going to show it some how....i mean the shooter is looking down the sights of his wpn, he sees the target, he will also see the splash, or bullet strike.....if not they will atleast see the target react to being shot.....Even the cooks could hit a target from 25 feet.... SO why 9 shots, well they say he was still armed.....still had the knife in his hands.....while in Afghanistan, i took a piece of grenade fragment to the ass, while clearing a trench line, "my fault" i jumped into the trench to early.....anyways this inch long of white hot piece of metal in my ass, is frying the meat around it.....the last thing in my mind was to drop my wpn, in fact my first worry was to pull this thing out of my ass cheek....My section mates tried to wrestle me to the ground to no avail, because i was jumping up and down, screaming get it out , get it out.....Why because it was burning my flesh and hurt like nothing i felt before....i could not imagine doing that 9 times.....My point is , the think is he is still armed, way of thinking is flawed.....he may of been armed but he was no doubt down and out of the game after three shots..... 9 shots shows alot of things , Rambo is not sure about the effects of his wpns, he lost control of his situational awareness meaning he was consumed with one thing engagement of his target nothing else nor was he aware of the condition of his target even after the pause. Then to fire 6 more rounds is hard to imagine.........and then to top it all off lets put a tazer into him.....shows me no one had the balls to go inside to disarm the suspect....they had to taze him just to make sure.....after nine rounds this guy is bleeding out fast....

I think the government has bigger fish to fry than to improve upon a law that only 3 people have been charged with since it's inception. Don't get me wrong i think treason to ones country is about as bad as it gets, perhaps as a private members bill, maybe it will get done, but i don't think it will be changed any time soon. We have had several cases that could or should have been brought to charge, the entire Khadr family would be one, and the other dozen or so Canadian terror suspects, i don't think Canadians have the stomach to go that far, or get that serious with that kind of criminal charge... There has been mentioned here a lot of different course of action that try to explain what to do with persons caught in terrorist acts.....First off Canadian prisons here are a joke, when you compare them to third world countries prisons, trust me if they had a choice of serving time here in Canada or in say Afghanistan, it would be a no brainer.....cable TV, 3 meals a day, the list is long, and sweet here in Canada. Why not just follow the law, if they are caught overseas, then they should be tried in that country to which they carried out the crime, and they should serve that full sentence in that same country. During that time Canada could remove it's citizenship to those that have duel citizenship to ensure they no longer return to Canada or their loved ones. To those that are only Canadian citizens, they should be returned to Canada but have their travel restricted, in other words banned from traveling to other nations.

Actually there still on the law books , unless you can provide a better source. I think you'll find it covers a lot more than attacking ones own country, http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/treason/ or this Law site, which states the law is still there, however questions if anyone will be charged with it, as the law is to old, and needs revision. http://www.c2cjournal.ca/2010/03/has-treason-run-its-course-in-canada/

You can jam almost any freq, there is a big difference between R/C vehs you buy at the local toy store and those drones that the military flies which are hardened to jamming....The Canadian military has been using jamming tech for twenty or more years now, from radar, to radio, to communications modes....we used a Cell and radio jammers in Afghanistan, both in a mobile platform and a stationary one, the mobile one was mounted in a LAV and had a range of about 750 meters or more, and it could jam all known cell freq's, along with a long list of others such as garage door openers, and others as the bad guys used them to detonate IED's it was used in large convoys.....the stationary ones gave were used at our main exits and entrances to the camps, once again to counter IED's....We also used cell trackers that could tap into any cell conversation in the area, listen to what was being said, and to find out the caller and the listeners location.....it to was available in a stationary or mobile platform...If we had a known bad guys location were would cause a diversion such as land a few tank or arty round close to their location, then listen to who he phoned to report the attack to.....and continue this process until we had all the bad guys locations noted for later.....

I am not missing the ball. And while the chart does assist officers by giving them the left and right of arcs, it is not the only tool they have to resolve situations. They're are many options available to them, Police get extensive training in shoot or don't shoot situations....they're first responsibility is protecting the public, and that includes everyone, including the bad guys.....de escalation is one tactic that is used.....and is used first, until there is no other option....if police stuck by this chart, why do SWAT teams have negotiations officer...i mean according to you if the suspect is armed they could just shoot him and go home.....and yet the news is full of stories of these type of situations taking hours to resolve... While i was doing my training, we had a few RCMP guys with us on the ranges, as they were being armed with the C-7 rifle, the military uses the double tap for any engagement, meaning you fire 2 shoots in rapid succession, to the center of mass at every target, until your target drops, or ceases to be a threat, while we were doing this training , the RCMP guys told us it goes again'st what they were trained to do, they pause after each round, see the effect then fire another if needed.....but only if needed..... each situation is different of course ....not all shoots are kill shoots, they are taught to aim to incompacate their intended target...... that is not what your guy did, he fired his wpn in rapid succession, in other words he panicked like he was facing some angry bear.....he broke protocol, and was not trying to save a life, but bent on taking a life....you don't empty a mag, without the intention of killing someone....either that or your a bad shot, a really bad shot and should not be wearing a uniform anyways... If you were in afghanistan then you know we had some very loose Rules of engagement, if i felt like i or my section, or my veh, etc....was threaten in any way , i could use deadly force....To say the police force have an even slacker ROE is just plain silly to the point of almost funny....again going back to the police motto serve and protect.....not kill everyone that is armed....
-
I agree with On Guard for thee.....this is not a simple case of the police office allowed to use deadly force.....It is one of not trying to descalate it....the kid was just a kid....they could of easily descalated it, or over powered him with non lethal force....that and the fact he was shot how many times.....a full magazine.........If i had done that in work up training for Afghanistan, i'd be out of a job, and i was preparing for combat......it's called excessive use of lethal force....might as well been a air strike....or a 120mm HE round....
-
I think that if this nation takes on any commitment, it should see it through period.....If the decision was well thought out and researched then we would know those answers before we commit.... The government was constantly setting time tables, but failed to reach the goals in those time frames....one has to keep in mind that the practice of nation building has not been done for a while... There is no Appetite in Canada for anything military......with one exception of Peacekeeping, then for some reason they don't care what the cost be it lives or treasure......And yet....peacekeeping today does not exist today as it did once before.....
-
Then what about the Afghanistan conflict told you it would be a waste of time and effort ? And while your convinced that it was not our intention to help a nation in need, what was our intentions in Afghanistan......why do you think we sent combat troops and Aid to destroy the bad guys ?.... I know for me personally, it was a chance to help...a chance to stand up for someone who could not fight for themselves.....a chance to perhaps give someone some of the things i and most Canadians take for granted everyday......some thing as simple as clean drinking water, to be able to go to school, walk in the market.......maybe one day some freedom and security to raise a family.....It is hard not to go to a place and meet the locals and not get emotional attached to the people and their culture.....it was easy developing a hatred for the Taliban and there terrorist buddies.....see first hand what they were capable of, what their goals where, and how far they would go to accomplish them.....to enslave an entire nation, so they could live out their perverted dreams of islam.... I've called you alot of things Eyeball, but never an ungrateful degenerate.....those are your words not mine.....i think i would have used selfish, how else would describe it....i mean how did the Afghan conflict your life personally....other than cost you a few bucks in taxes.....there was no time, or effort required on your part ....

Retired from the Military after 34 and a bit years of service....not sure what is next...

This comment is very telling, about who we are as a nation....better yet who you are as a person....Afghanistan was one of the few conflicts that was not about oil, or big corporations....it was about helping out a nation that had endured 30 plus years of conflict, that had left them in despair, with no hope of a future, under a regime that was brutal..... It was a chance for us as a nation to give an out reached hand, and help them , give them some hope for the future..... Again a very telling remark.....why even try to help anyone if it is going to be too much effort or distraction..... I mean we as Canadians have the world by the balls, we don't know what extreme poverty means, nobody is starving to death, we live in a nation free from conflict, we go to the malls, spend our dollars of useless crap, we have freedoms that most only dream about.....and yet we are not willing to share any of that, because that would require effort and maybe some of our tax dollars.....I should clarify not all Canadians fell the same way you do....but alot do.... For me , what sank in long ago, was this nation has to faces, one it puts on for the public and world to see, " the smiling bubbly one, that says hey we are an honest, friendly, nation that want to help.....shit we even wrap ourselfs in our flag and tell everyone we invented peacekeeping, we want to help you......the second face is the one, that only cares about ME, is the government going to send my check on time, when is the hockey game on.....and why is this shit on the news about those muslim countries on again....... We talk a good game but we lack everything to put it all in motion......not all of us.....just guys like you eyeball....who are happy with their heads in the sand, who don't give a rats ass about anything else in the world or country, as long as it does not effect your personal life.....That's what sank in.....Does it matter....i think it does.....

Where have you travelled (going to travel) open thread
Army Guy replied to msj's topic in Travel, Leisure and Sports
Spent 6 months in the Sinai pen, that huge glob of land between Israel and Egypt, patrolling ( counting vehs in each zone) the desert by helo , with MFO forces, kind of like UN but a multi coalition force made up of dozens of countries..... Spent all our days off in Israel , Tel aviv, and Elat.....soaking up the sun and drinking way to much.....although we did go to Cairo and do the tourist thing, see the pyramids, valley of the kings and queens in luxor.....Israel had a more western feel to it....As long as you can get by the added security, and everyone being armed.....and of course there is the terrorist thing.....Just be vigilant and you'll be fine.... Got to see many great things, battle fields of WWII, and also the wars between Israel and Egypt.....i have a great bunch of photo's of destroyed Germany, British and American equipment out in the middle of the desert, in pristine condition....like the day the role off the assembly line.....tank tracks still in the sand.....found lots of empty casings, even a US water canteen, which we left as we felt it was a type of war grave, without the bodies... The desert was full of these sites which when we first got there, we'd land besides and check them out.....that all stopped when we started to find mines all over the place.....The entire region was full of history, to see it all you have to do multi trips..... Word of advice, do not eat from any of the outdoor vendors, that have meat on a hook or on display always eat at a good quality restaurant, and do not buy any bottle water,or use ice outside of any good source or you'll end up with what we called Jippo gut....where you puke and squirt at the same time, it is painful, it only gives you seconds to react, so could be embarrassing as well. Although it is a great weight loss program....i learned this the hard way, and spent 2 weeks camped out on a chair next to the bath room stalls in camp......anything more than 10 steps away from the toilet would normally end up with you shiting yourself...and forget about eating, or drinking, your body pumps that stuff out faster than a japanese bullet train.... -
We all knew that the situation in Afghanistan was not over, we also knew the consequences of coalition countries pulling out. So why does this surprise you.....Most Canadians knew all of this when , we decided to leave Afghanistan to it's own fate......we left when the job was not finished....because Canadians and the rest of the western world grew tired of the effort and funding required......I don't think those in favour of an early withdrawal should have that right to point they're fingers and say " See Afghanistan is a complete failure" You got what you wanted, our nation is out of Afghanistan, it is yesterdays news....Because part of that failure is we did not see this through we just gave up when it was convenient for us to do so... All this shows the world is unless it is a short term problem , the west is not up to the task.....it also shows that we as a western coalition can not work together to solve this type of problems, we lack the patients, the will, to see it through.....
-
I hope for all our sakes that your right.....but i could not get past the damage the liberals did in the past.....
