Dick Cheney Funeral
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Dick Cheney was a cold warrior in a world beyond the cold war. Our PM Jean Chretien had the temerity to stand up to him, and Bush. -
Dick Cheney Funeral

Who won the Cold War? Who defeated the Soviet Union, the Communists? I reckon LBJ - Nixon/Kissinger got along to get along. Reagan said no. Gorbachev said yes. -
Migration, Immigration, Emigration -Expats vs Immigrants

I equate wealthy and hard-working - whether a person is left-handed, or right-handed. -
Swedish Griffen vs American (Trump) F-35
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Note to all: Civilised Europe collapsed between 1789-1815. In the world cataclysm of 1914-1945, Newfoundlanders lost much. -
Swedish Griffen vs American (Trump) F-35
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I tend to agree. NATO? Cold War? The Clinton, Bush, Yeltsin world is long gone. Trump is an American first leader. Like Putin. Welcome to the 21st century. -
Various Bush guys, Clinton, Gore. Biden, his wife. I'm sure Obama was there. Xi, nor Putin were not at the funeral. Why? Trump was also noticeably not at the funeral. ===== With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, America won the Cold War. The world entered a new era.

Is Quebec Becoming The New Evil Empire?
August1991 replied to Zeitgeist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
In Victoria BC, in 1971, advised by Claude Morin, Robert Bourassa foolishly refused an agreement where we would continue to have the Constitution as such (BNA Act)- but the Quebec government would have veto on any constitutional change. Why did Bourassa refuse? Morin advised him to ask for more. ===== Nowadays, we have ridiculous 7/majority measures and notwithstanding clauses. -
Is Quebec Becoming The New Evil Empire?

Pierre Trudeau wanted a method to amend our Constitution and a Charter of Rights to restrict the power of the State and protect the individual. He was forced to compromise. ==== You Americans have both: a clear method to amend and protection of the individual. -
1. After Covid, what Microsoft marketing person chose the name Copilot for AI. -In Microsoft, their AI Copilot is just another version of Clippy. Clueless, irritating. 2. To me, AI should know what I typically do - how I organise my files on my laptop, in my inbox -It should help me -Microsoft Copilot, all AI, does none of that 3. So far, AI is ChatGPT - summaries of my Google searches.

Liberal Government Budget Passes with Conservative Help
August1991 replied to TreeBeard's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Obstruct government? ==== It is a minority federal governement. If I were Poilievre, I would do everything to make the life of Carney absolute hell. Canadians will blame Liberals if things go wrong. -

I would have done the same now in Nov 2025. In Dec 1979, Bob Rae had a different view. -
1. Toronto Star: Buy the plane that is not Trump. 2. Ikea: Swedish for flimsy. 3. Why did Sweden join NATO? ======= 4. I am tired of this military-nationalistic system. Let's get along.

The federal Liberals only bought two Tory MPs - and they only bought part of the NDP. Carney is ambitious, true - but I've always thought that he's like Ignatieff- a flake. Trump has shown that Carney folds. -

Disagree. ===== Nflders survived. Bulgarians survived. Quebecers survived. An English-Canadian wrote a bad novel on such a premise.

New Submarines: Carney vs Poilievre
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Disagree. Europeans have a tendency to fight each other. You know, Germans vs French. We Canadians (Catholic, French, English, Protestant) have a long history of getting along. -
Pierre Trudeau spoke good French, international French. I raised my daughters to speak such. ===== But they can imitate a Newfoundlander. What is genuine?

Thanks to Harper, the REM works

New Submarines: Carney vs Poilievre
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I have no naval experience, nor any military experience. But I have walked the paths of various battles in various wars: the collapse of civilised Europe in Summer 1914 is striking; similar to our current world situation. -
And wearing a Rolex watch is also a signal. Young white male kids paint graffiti. Why?

New Submarines: Carney vs Poilievre
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
We Canadians avoided the cataclysm/collapse of August 1914. Heck, we Canadians even avoided the US civil war. We Canadians get along. We Canadians: French, English, Catholic, Protestant, indigineous, whatever. We get along. -

All the more reason to avoid wasting money on building a larger dreadnought.
