  1. CBC = English-speaking Canada Radio-Canada = French-speaking Canada
  2. Winston Churchill crossed twice. His phrase, "To cross twice, is a double rat." ===== Mark Carney is a weak leader. But he has smart federal Liberal politicos trying to support him.
  3. Created in the 1960s, our Social Insurance Number has 9 digits - the last is a check digit, based on the previous 8. The first digit was an indicator of province/region (2 was Alberta, 4 was Ontario, 5 was Quebec): 9 was for refugees. PXX-XXX-XXY ==== US Social Security Numbers also have 9 digits: AAA-GG-SSSS (No check digit). ========= Here's my question: We honest older people all have a SIN/SSC. -to avoid identify theft, should the State implant/record our numbers? .

  5. Friedman's greatest regret is the invention of payroll taxes. In America and Canada, governments deduct various taxes at the pay statement. ==== Elsewhere in the world, people pay taxes as we Americans and Canadians pay property taxes or HOA fees. In Montreal, the local jurisdiction sends me a property tax bill. I pay it. I reckon we should pay all taxes this way.
  6. Exactly. $200 billion? - We Canadians produce $2 000 trillion of value. A rounding error.
  7. Fast-moving stocks? I'm with Charlie and Warren: 1) low fees, 2) avoid taxes
  8. In Quebec, Sunwing had a remarkable name brand. Westjet destroyed the name. ===== Albertans may make Quebec a separate country.
  9. It is cheap to send a satellite to the other side of the Sun - and detect an incoming asteroid. We spend billions to reduce CO2 - yet the chance is similar.
  10. The WestJet purchase of Sunwing has reduced shareholder value. Onex.to
  11. Marlon Brando:
  12. Spike Lee is the DEI version of Mazursky. Woody Allen is the Limo version. Scorcese is the gritty version ===== I reckon the Mazursky version is best: "Moscow on the Hudson" is a good example.
  13. McCartney (b. 1940) and Woody Allen (b. 1935). Both were born in a dearth of children - just before a baby boom.
  14. Americans can print money as long as foreigners want to hold the greenback.
  15. "...bunch of domains.... " I'm different. I like to keep it simple.
  16. Agreed. No human will live on Mars. Our DNA is not designed for such a planet. ==== 1. Climate change? Let's send robots to Venus to figure out what happened. 2. Impending doom? Let's send satellites to detect incoming asteroids.
  17. Disagree - but good question. Shady, do voters choose a "party" or "a person"?
  18. Both spoke delightful French. Hint for kids: If you want to be successful in politics in Canada, speak French the way these two guys did. ==== IMHO: Trudeau was a federalist more than a democrat. Lévesque was a democrat more than a federalist.
  19. Spanky, Europe has better neighbours? Wtf? Summer 1914.... We Canadians could not wish for a better neighbor. ==== If I were Poilievre/Carney, I'd remind Trump that you Americans could not wish for a better neighbour.
  20. Trust me. The island of Newfoundland was dear to the heart of Pierre Trudeau. Most people in Newfoundland have two origins -the family name tells the tale: England (before 1800) and Ireland (after 1800). Yet, this island of Catholics and Protestants get along.
  21. Flaubert famously re-read, corrected, rewrote. He never finished Madame Bovary. Woody Allen famously never watched his movies. ===== Balzac pissed text. Like Oates, he described an era.
  22. Politics is an ugly game.
  23. I recently drove to Plattsburgh. No problem entering the US. Return to Canada? ===== We could not hope for better neighbors.
  24. Margaret Atwood wrote a novel "Surfacing". Simply bad writing. Then she wrote "Survival", it is all wrong about Canada. ======= Robertson Davies is a far better writer. And better story teller. But he's not CBC.
