  1. True, like Hitler and Napoleon, Stalin was a psychopath who wanted to control all of Europe. To me, Putin is Russian. He wants to control/protect Russia. ==== We Canadians should leave NATO. The Soviet Union is no more. Reagan won. In these 2020s, we Canadians must imagine a different world.
  2. If they buy in Canada, such people pay the GST. (The GST does not apply to rent - or donuts.) If they emit CO2, they pay. Harper became PM in part because he promised to cut the GST from 7% to 5%. Guilbeault could be PM if he promises to eliminate the GST - and replace it with a CO2 tax.
  3. Everyone who emits CO2, yes. Gates - with his jets- emits more than me. Eliminate the GST. Instead, we tax CO2. The revenues from a CO2 tax will replace the GST. === Mulroney (Thatcher, Reagan) had the courage to do such things. If Guilbeault were serious, he would do the same.
  4. You Americans call this eminent domain. We call it expropriation. I have no problem with the State taking my property for the greater good - with compensation. Or, the State restricting me from having a gun. BTW, I suspect the difference has nothing to do with a Constitution.
  5. Nationalizing? What a term. In fact, each provincial government designed its own health system. Each province is different.
  6. If I were Guilbeault, this is what I would argue around the cabinet table: -We will eliminate the federal GST - when you buy. -Instead, we will only tax when you send CO2 into the atmosphere. ====== Mulroney did this with Free Trade, Ozone, Acid Rain and the MST.
  7. His father was smart - resigned, grew a beard in 1979 and then came back. He's Number One son
  8. PEI is not like Alberta or Nfld. As a federal justice minister once famously said, I paraphrase, the federal government has no business in the affairs of raising children.
  9. Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney were Catholic. Turner was Catholic. Paul Martin was Catholic. Stephen Harper was Protestant.
  10. The US Constitution is a remarkable document. It has several amendments - some passed immediately. Canada's Charter of Rights is an attempt to protect the individual against the government, in a federal State.
  11. His smart father had a huge ego. His stupid mother also had a huge ego. Resign? I'd be surprised.
  12. To me, a tax usually reduces what is taxed. So, a CO2 tax will reduce CO2 emissions. What to do with the CO2 tax revenue? I'd give it out to all - fairly. (How about eliminating the GST? Desperate - has Gerald Butts thought of that?)
  13. It's not cheating - it's kryptonite. The Democrats have figured out how to "get out the vote". ===== In the opinion of many activists, they are helping people to vote in a way that they should vote if it were easy to vote. In Canada, in our federal and provincial elections, it is easy to vote: we choose one candidate in a riding. In person, it takes about 5 minutes. In the US, in November, years of presidential elections in particular - there is a long list of names, choices, referenda. A US ballot is like our municipal elections.
  14. You call it an "anchor currency". I call it a reserve currency. I am thankful that we Canadians - like Norwegians and the British - still have our own monetary policy.
  15. I favour a tax on CO2 emissions, I understand the rebate idea. Great pic/ad. Where?
  16. This is my question. Americans have federal Social Security promises - zillions of Americans (around the world) expect their monthly paper. What happens if the US number changes? What about Canadian numbers?
  17. The Japanese are at over 200% of debt/GDP. The US government can tax people like Musk/Gates. It is perception. ===== In Quebec, my government borrows (sells bonds) at about 2%. Why? Buyers know that the Quebec government can pay its bonds.
  18. Vote by mail? I disagree. I think that you should dip your finger, in purple ink. Be loud and proud: Show the world that you voted.
  19. You clearly don't know Canada's history. And BTW, the issue was not language or even province, it was religion.
  20. In terms of trust. it is. We Canadians are proud of our civilised society. When we vote, I think that we should dip our finger in purple ink. I have to show my ID when voting. I use a pencil. Why not purple ink?
  21. Democracy? We all have a ball, and we put it in a large bowl. Then, someone reaches into the bowl - and picks one ball. The winner is elected. ====== To me, "Democracy" is when State power passes without violence or death - between people who hate each other. Since 1802 and John Adams, the US is a democracy.
  22. Trudeau Snr defined a civilised society as how the majority treats the minority. I have a slightly different measure: A civilised society is when a minority votes for a majority candidate - yet given a minority candidate. ==== Ed Broadbent recently died. He did not understand Canada. I recall Broadbent describing nationalism as tribalism.
  23. Another US Civil War? God forbid. I'm with Pierre Trudeau. A civilised federal state has counterweights. But we Canadians get along.
  24. The counties in Michigan to start.
