  1. In 1960, the Soviets and Maoist China were united and wanted to change the world. In 2020, Russia and China are different countries. We now live in a different world. I fear that today, we live in a world like the 1890s - we have forgotten what war is.
  2. I think that we should withdraw from NATO. Reagan won. ===== The UN? Affiliated organisations? According to Guilbeault: Ordinary Canadians cannot travel but Geneva bureaucrats like him can travel, spew CO2.
  3. Irrelevant. All of them. This explains why Kennedy Jnr left early, and Christie dropped out. I reckon that Haley and deSantis are still there as an insurance policy. ====== France has a two-tier voting system. Like US primaries, we vote - eliminate. Then, vote again. In Canada, we choose a local person who votes on our behalf.
  4. Which Trudeau? Trudeau Snr was a difficult person. Trudeau Jnr is like his mother. ===== Canada is cold in winter.
  5. At present in federal Canada, there is no wedge issue based on language/religion. We Canadians are divided - but not on language, religion.
  6. No. You have absolutely no idea of a wedge issue. Unions speak of "scabs" - people who cross picket lines. We Canadians somehow cross picket lines.
  7. NATO and SEATO were created to confine the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union is no more. I think think that we Canadians should leave NATO.
  8. NATO was created to contain the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union is no more. Russia? This is something else. ==== Army Guy (and any others), I created a thread on this issue.
  9. In Sri Lanka years ago, illiterate people voted by symbol: elephant, lion. etc And then, the voter dipped a finger in permanent ink to show that they voted. No one can vote twice! I think that we in this sophisticated social internet world should do the same. ==== Covid? We all know about face masks, who is wearing one. Purple finger? I voted. In a democracy.
  10. On a far greater issue, the US survived a violent but short civil war. The issue? If a federal state is to be sustainable, what are the powers of the central government?
  11. Disagree. One person, one vote. Who could possibly argue with that? In 2020 (and 2022), the Democrats discovered a way to ensure that more people vote, cast a ballot. Look at the turnout numbers in 2020 compared to any previous presidential year. In 2020, about 81 million voted for Biden, 74 million for Trump. Total? 155. In 2012, about 66 million voted for Obama, 60 million for Romney. Total? 126. Moreover, the Democrats know which critical counties in which critical states matter. == The Democrats have always believed (our NDP is similar) that poor ignorant people don't go to vote.
  12. Watch this video: ================ I first learned of Fryer listening to this podcast: https://www.econtalk.org/roland-fryer-on-educational-reform/
  13. We in the West won in 1989/1991. People are now free to travel. We can talk to one another without borders. This is good. Americans, you have your way of doing things. We others have our way. As they say, this is no longer a monopolar world.
  14. Disagree. Your thinking lead us to the cataclysm of August 1914. === This is not the 1930s.
  15. Disagree. In 1962, JFK read Tuchman's Guns of August. He worried about world powers badly negotiating. This was the world that he knew. Yet by 1962, the world was stable. We had survived 30 years of war. Men like Nixon, Kennedy, Reagan, Bush Snr - Brezhnev, Trudeau Snr had all lived through WWII. ===== IMHO, Tuchman's book refers to our current age - the 2020s. This is our current world. Like the late 1800s or 1910 or so, we have States struggling for dominance, and people who have never known war in their lifetime.
  16. We now speak of the Thirty Years War, In fact, it had two stages. I suspect that in the far future, people will speak of this period between 1914-1945 as we now refer to the Napoleonic Wars.
  17. Dickens' story was based on Macauley - but it's simply a good story. Robertson Davies tried something like this. War and Peace? No patience for the deer hunt. ===== I disagree. The world of 1913 was good and civiliised. And then, an elite got involved in nonsense, it killed itself - and for the next 30 years, many ordinary people died.
  18. I dunno. This is ugly. I reckon that even Trump/Christie don't know how to organise/collect votes. ==== IMHO, Biden will be US President in 2025.
  19. In Canada, in federal and provincial elections, we have one choice. Every US election is like our municipal election.
  20. Agreed, States such as North Korea/China/Russia will show many people with purple fingers. IMH, AI will quickly show that these fingers are fake.
  21. Never heard of either. To me, this is a Trudeau vs Lévesque debate. Obama? He was Laurier.
  22. Fuel Cells? Solar panels? ==== Engineers -using rule of thumb- built aqueducts. Scientists brought us to, uh, climate science.
  23. CdnFox, you neither understand sarcasm nor irony.
  24. Individuals hold up their right thumb, purple ink: It signals that I voted, in a democracy. No one knows their choice. The world merely sees that they voted. ===== The purple ink will last for several weeks. (You can't vote twice!) But everyone will know, I voted.
  25. I have no dog in this fight. Well, I do. I know such people. And as a Canadian, we get along.
