The Great Big 2024 Election Battle Thread!
August1991 replied to CdnFox's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
This map is a good start. But look carefully: Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota. Now, think of the big cities in these states. -
To wit. At about 3am, the German police once stopped me in a rental car - I was near Leipzig, leaving a bar - I had not drank - at all. The cops were polite, good. (Flashing lights. I asked whether I could speak English. remove my hands from the steering wheel.) Another time, in Toronto, New Year's 2000. I was stopped. (Remember the CN tower exploding?) ==== If you drink, stay at home. And if you drive and don't don't drink at all, it's great when they stop you.
-
Several decades/centuries ago, I drove home drunk. Abroad, given my papers, I was waved on. Never, ever would I do this now.
-
Good point. Drunk drivers typically get caught in the morning. ===== In Canada, we have a federal criminal code. But in this case, provincial officers apply the law. As Margaret Trudeau once did, I would say nothing, and wait until lawyers decided.
-
Canada has equalisation payments. I understand the logic: We don't want people moving around wastefully, seeking tax/social benefits. (But in effect, the Quebec government can tax individuals in Alberta.) But carry the idea to the international level (CIDA, World Bank, norad.no, UN) and we are allowing corrupt regimes to tax us. ===== Federal Health Act? Bureaucrats in Ottawa know nothing - nothing - about health issues in PEI. Gimme a break.
-
Let me repeat: IMHO, this world of the 2020s is like the 1910s or so. We too have had several decades of peace. We too have a clueless elite - like in 1910. These 2020s is nothing like the 1930s. ==== JFK worried about the start of World War I. Yet thinking back, no one wanted such a war. Khrushchev had fought in Stalingrad. Kennedy had lost his brother. In the 2020s, people forget about how World War I started.
-
IMHO, we're not in the 1930s, facing Hitler - or even the 1950s - facing the Soviets. If there is a comparison, it is the 1910s. We ordinary people live well - but our clueless elite is creating war.
-
In 1910 or so, many young men lived - not perfectly - but well. And in the summer of 1914, an elite lead these young men to death ====== We no longer need NATO.

Should Stores Checking Receipts be Made Unlawful?

Agreed. Costco vs Walmart - pay more but wait less in line. -
For good reason. Stopping drivers in Vancouver, BC to not drink and drive as people in PEI. Let alone people in rural Quebec.

Why Trump Won’t Win

Purple ink When we Canadians vote, the scrutineer should not only cross off our name, we should also dip a finger in purple ink. "I voted. I live in a civilised society." -
Seats? Harper got more seats in Quebec in 2011 than Duceppe. We Canadians vote across religious/linguistic lines. Protestants vote for a Catholic candidate, and so on.
-
And according to NBC/CNN, so is Trump. ===== IMHO, we need a new structure of peace. I fear that we are now like the 1910s or the 1780s. An elite was clueless and ordinary people have forgotten.

Why Trump Won’t Win

Disagree. In the US, there's no fraudulent ballots. ===== In Canada, we have a simple paper ballot - one check of a name. (You show up in person, show your ID, scrutineers/people check, you check one name, vote behind a cardboard cover.) We fold the paper (tear off part) and put it in a box. (It has always bothered me about the tearing off, number.) In the US, the ballot paper is a long list of checks. ==== As a foreigner, I have gone through the voting procedure in other countries: Russia and Sri Lanka, for example. My conclusion? Purple ink. On our thumb. When we Canadians vote, we should dip our thumb in purple ink - and hold it proudly for media.
