Why Trump Won’t Win
August1991 replied to robosmith's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
In the 1800s, in America, candidates printed ballots and handed them to people (men). Ballots were like coupons for us today. (Like Iowa today, whichever candidate got the most ballots was a winner.) Have you seen the movie Around the World in Eighty Days? Have you seen the scene in San Francisco? (Frank Sinatra did a cameo... ) ===== IMHO, the Americans -centuries ago- wisely left the issue of counting votes to the States. -
In the summer of 1914, an elite destroyed itself - and it killed many. many ordinary people over the next three decades. In the summer of 1789, a similar event occurred. I suggest that you read Dickens' novel - A Tale of Two Cities. As a Canadian, it is a wonder.

Why Trump Won’t Win

All irrelevant. Do the numbers. ==== With the election of 2020, Democrats discovered kryptonite. Republicans - Trump in particular - are clueless. -
Why Trump Won’t Win

In the mind of many young Americans, it's not cheating. These young Americans are merely helping fellow Americans to choose what is in their best interest. -
Good deal: Sur le plan des salaires, le Front commun a obtenu des augmentations de 17,4 % sur cinq ans, lesquelles s’accompagnent d’une clause de protection du pouvoir d’achat pour chacune des trois dernières années de la convention collective

Canada 1896: Clifford Sifton
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
On second thought, I disagree. Hodad, I reckon that Zuckerburg would spend his money in Pennsylvania instead. -
No, I have been to these parts of Ukraine and Russia. I have spoken to people. This is a horrific civil war - a pointless war between stubborn Slavs - that could have been avoided. So much death and destruction. In Canada, we get along.

GH9dad, You are halucinating! ===== Gates, Zuckerburg have a $1 billion to throw a way. This means 10,000 guys will get $100,000 each. And all the guys have to do is read this forum, and post. Welcome to Citizen Kane, 21st century. -

I am human, a real person. But fair enough, I should think before posting. IMHO, this forum is like a bar. I can drink, talk and I'm not near a vehicle. ==== Robosmith posts as if Wikipedia responded to me. -
Why Trump Won’t Win
August1991 replied to robosmith's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
In previous US presidential elections, this would have mattered - inflation, interest rates etc. In 2024, it does not. I think we all understand that no Republican will ever - ever - win certain counties in Illinois, California, New York, Pennsylvania. Everyone knows these counties. Well, these counties are now state-wide. Trump has zero chance of winning Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Nevada. This is why Biden and the Democrats are so calm. -

FPTP is extreme danger in uncertain and volatile times
August1991 replied to myata's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I did watch the series. Not bad. ==== Fun thread to flip through. Hey kids, You think that your vote in an election changes something. It does not. Trust me, it does not. But when you buy something, your purchase changes something. Trust me, it does. === Democracy? Two criteria: 1. We all put black/white balls in a large bowl. Someone draws a ball and if it's black, the black guy is president. 2. The power of the State is passed without death, between people who hate each other. (My preferred definition. John Adams did it first. Donald Trump also, BTW.) -
NATO was created to defend ourselves against the Soviets, Stalin, the Communists. Since 1991, people are free to travel. Young people understand this. They know that NATO no longer has any purpose. In 1967, France left NATO. Canada should do the same now. The world must change.

Government GDP Debt Ratio - What if?
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
True. But buying a TD, RBC or CIBC share in Canadian dollars on the TSX is almost like buying the index. My question is different. If the US government defaults (it won't - but what if it has problems selling its bonds), what happens to the Canadian dollar? If the US government bond market changes (yield curve), what happens to Canadian paper? -
Intellectuals now think this is the 1930s. The US MSM is terrified that Trump is the next Hitler. Like JFK reading Tuchman, Kissinger and Vienna, Trudeau Snr, my fear is that we are on the verge of a 1912-style situation. Our elite is leading ordinary people into a cataclysm. In summer 1912, cities like Leipzig, Tsaritsyn, Lemberg, Konigsberg, Breslau were beautiful. Like Montreal today, many had diverse people, different languages By 1949, these cities were destroyed. Why? Because an elite f*cked things up in 1914.

If you ask me: I favour Israel. It is the only civilised place in the region. But make no mistake: some Lebanese, Palestinians and Israelis love attention, a few thousand. Peas in a pod.
-
I may be old but this horrific civil war between Russia and Ukraine, it could have been avoided. As to the current war in Israel-Gaza, I don't know.

I wish international disputes -foreigners- could decide their disputes as we Canadians do. We Canadians have a federal system with two official languages, we have two legal systems. Catholics live beside Protestants. For centuries, largely in peace, we various people get along.

Federal Dental Insurance Care Scheme
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Years ago, a friend said that that it should have a crashed Pantera as a symbol. ==== This dental is a reach too far. -
I dislike Poilievre but I agree that we have to change.

Whenever you hear the word power, it means control. ==== As Margaret Atwood wisely said, "At most, a woman can laugh at a man.. A man can kill a woman."

In 1912 - the summer of 1914 - the world was not perfect. Nowadays, 2023 or so, every politician is worried about 1938 or so We remember the wars of our children.
