  1. Looking back. in Europe, there were three great periods of "wars"/ 1616-1646 -Thirty Years 1789-1815 -Napoleonic 1914-1945 -Germanic
  2. By curiousity, I went and looked at the battlefields of the Seven Years War and the Napoleonic Wars, I walked around them. The so-called war in 1757-1763 was largely a dispute between Austria and Prussia involving Saxony. There were two treaties: One important treaty signed in Hurtursburg, Saxony. The other signed in a palace south of Paris. Napoleon, like Hitler, wanted to re-make history.
  3. In effect,, myata, you are describing Biden.
  4. Beaumont-Hamel I strongly recommend anyone with a Newfoundland connection to go and and see this place in Europe. The summer of 1914. Such folly. I fear that our Gulfstream elites in these 2020s -just as clueless.
  5. In Canada, we used to live in a society of trust. In this current society, we brought foreigners. ===== To me, Canada in the 2020s is now like any other place/territory on the planet.
  6. Duplessis shut down others. Our current best protection against idiocy is our Charter.
  7. 1. AG, have you been to Dieppe? Walked around? Up the coast to the burial site. I did with with my daughter. 2. Disagree. The best structure of peace is a wise stable system: counterweights.
  8. True. In the mind of young urban American progressives, they are simply helping another person to do what the person would do. Nothing illegal. It was once called: "Registering, get out the vote." Since 2020, the Dems discovered kryptonite
  9. Look again at critical county votes in these 6/7 States. In 2020, the Dems discovered kryptonite. ====== I reckon that deSantis - he won Florida - could have organised. Trump? His people don't understand, are clueless, how complicated this is.
  10. Americans are self-centred - they have no understanding of irony. In Canada, in federal and provincial elections, we go to a local place and select a single candidate. In America, the ballot is now like our census form with many questions.
  11. AG, I no longer drink and drive. Thank God, I did not have to pay for my foolishness. The cost of a life? About $20 million. Younger, I wonder if someone had imposed this premium on me - if I had done what I did.
  12. Disagree? Herbie, you seem to agree. ===== Pay someone else to do what I can do myself?
  13. There are some 120,000 people on PEI. Newfoundlanders? About 600,000 or so. For all tax issues - in this modern world, civilised Canada - they should be able to talk to someone local.
  14. The CRA login/website is a disaster. (I understand the issues with fraud - endless passwords.) I have fewer problems with my Qc login
  15. You miss my point. These six/seven states are now like, uh, Illinois - with Chicago. ====== When was the last time a Republican won the overall, popular vote? Nixon in 1972? To be president in 2025, Trump must win with margins like Reagan. Reagan won Illinois in 1980 and 1984.
  16. Zero-sum thinking. Who is "us"? ===== BTW, bureaucrats in Revenu-Quebec calculate collect the federal GST - and then send money to the feds. I reckon the federal government/other Canadians receive more money through this method.
  17. I disagree. Abortion and MAiD (medically-assisted death) are not murder, killing.
  18. From what I understand, as measured by a place in Hawaii, CO2 in the atmosphere has risen from 320 ppm to 400 ppm. Apparently, we have to reduce our CO2 emissions. There are several ways to stop something: tax, regulate or subsidise an alternative. I favour a tax on CO2 emissions. To me, Teslas and EVs are subsidiised, expensive toys for rich people. When asked, they still have an SUV in the basement to keep the beer cold.
  19. If I were Poilievre, I would do as Harper suggested and have a single form and let bureaucrats in Quebec collect the federal income tax. They would do a better job - and Canada would have more.
  20. No one wants to pay tax. (Fine, agree.) More painful, possibly, is the way the tax is collected/calculated. (Why? How?) ====== In this modern world, in civilised Canada. we want to pay our taxes easily, quickly, online: Revenu Quebec works (I hate them but they are correct.) Canada Revenue Agency does not work.
  21. When I want to smell the ocean - or buy without sales tax, I cross the border and drive through NH. Southern NH is a suburb of Boston - like Oregon/Arizona are suburbs of California. America, whadda country.
  22. No. He lost. No way. ==== I would not be surprised if Trump chose Haley as VP candidate. In SC, she won as a governor. And watch what happens in Nevada: caucus/primary.
  23. Thread drift ahead. (Or thread return to OP.) There are 6 or 7 "battleground" states: Arizona, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Minnesota. Each of these states has critical urban counties. And each state allows send-out ballots, mail-in votes. (In Canada, these ballots are like our census forms.) ===== IMHO, Trump will not win any of these 7 states.
  24. Well said. In finance, they say: diversify. Life itself has its own way to force us to diversify. We are forced to live among people of different ages.
