Our Census Form vs Their Ballot
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Trump in 2024? How about Democrats in 2020? It's unbelievable. As I say, Americans now treat their ballots the way we treat our census forms. Imagine. -
Federal Dental Insurance Care Scheme
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Eyeball, I have no objection to collective (single-payer, State) healthcare insurance. 1. I reckon that local authorities (eg. provincial bureaucrats) are better at running such schemes. 2. Health insurance? Wtf? Health costs are either pregnant women or normal people about to die. 3. But some people have "problems". and they are very costly. In the case of health care, I reckon local bureaucrats know the situation. ==== All things considered, I like the Quebec/German health system. ==== But as to such state dental care insurance, I strongly disagree. -

First move? I disagree. The first move was in 2014 when Russia occupied Crimea. ===== Miss you Black Dog. -
World Peace for a Century - 2020 to 2120
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
For a century after 1815, there was a structure of peace between States - and as a result, ordinary people lived far better. We discovered so much. I am thankful that the US and NATO defeated the Soviet Union in 1989. In 2020, we need a new structure of peace. We have many problems to solve. -
CO2 Tax -How to sell in retail politics
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Good question. Dunno. But for urban, suburban voters, the GST would disappear.. For leftists etc, they would now be paying the GST through a CO2 tax - helping the environment. -
CO2 Tax -How to sell in retail politics
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Amazing the federal Liberals have not done this. Harper cut the GST from 7% to 5% - he won an election. If I were Trudeau Jnr, I would eliminate the federal GST and explain that it is now replaced with the C02 tax, an Environment Tax. We already have a federal 10 cent per litre excise tax on gasoline. Call it a CO2 tax (which it is). -
I am not Armenian - nor Jewish. But Armenian is a remarkable language: it has distinct letters for the sounds, letters (rolled-R of French, German, English) of both Arabic and Western languages. IME, Armenians are the best interpreters. Since their language forces them to use the tongue/throat differently, Armenians often speak without accent. Be careful!

Our Census Form vs Their Ballot
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Canada / United States Relations
I have been to voting places in different countries, how different people vote. I have even watched how they count. ==== It is striking that voting in America is like completing a Canadian census form. To vote in a federal election in Canada, we have a single paper/ballot and put one X beside one name. In the US, depending on the State, voting is now more like our Canadian Census Form. Many questions, I received several, I can mail as I wish. -
Federal Dental Insurance Care Scheme
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Eyeball, This is a potential Venezuela/Argentina disaster. Canada is a good country - let's not screw it up. 1. Such schemes should be provincial, local. Federal bureaucrats in Ottawa know nothing about local dental care issues. 2. Dental care? Where do you draw the line between what an individual pays and what the State pays? -
I used to watch the Oscars. When they moved to nine potential Best Pictures, I stopped watching. I rarely go to the cinema now. The last time I bought a ticket was to watch Oppenheimer - I walked out before the end. Too much CGI. I reckon that modern movies are made for international/Chinese audiences.

Putin Interview with Carlson -Feb 2024
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
For Russians, the Great Patriotic War started in June 1941. For Americans, December 1941. In the UK, it was 1939. Frankly, i have no desire to look at these years/dates as significant. To me, the 30 years between 1914 and 1945 were a catastrophe. Versailles, 1919? Irrelevant - part of the folly of these years. IMHO, a civilised world collapsed in 1914. Why? How? -
Putin Interview with Carlson -Feb 2024
August1991 replied to August1991's topic in The Rest of the World
In Canada, the war started in 1939. For Americans and Russians, it started in 1941. -
The civilised world collapsed in summer 1914 because an elite was clueless. The US must agree to peace in Ukraine. The US must agree that Taiwan is part of China. Israel, Lebanon? A distraction. ==== Truman and Kennan- not Roosevelt - created a world of peace in 1945. We have many environmental issues. True, I agree.

I recently walked by the REM underground mess in Montreal. I reckon the Crosstown error was to make it continuous, a single line. I'm a federalist. Let's start, and see what works.

Betsy, IMHO, you have a colonialist view of the world. At present, the world has some 7 billion people. Of these, there are some 2 billion people who were born in China.

At the federal level, there are six or seven critical states: Michigan, Georgia, Nevada, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Virginia. (California will go Dem, North Dakota will go Red, etc.... ) In the US, individual states decide voting procedures. Among these critical states, the Dems have all the Governor, control the voting procedures. ==== IMHO, in Nov 2024, Trump has zero chance of winning.
