Canada's policy towards Israel is driven by what? The fact that Israel is a nation with a lot to give to Canada? Israel is a major trading partner? I am searching for reasons here. A tiny little country in Africa - no, it's not me who classifies it as a country in Africa - Foreign Affairs does. So why exactly is the Prime Minister of our country so exercised about being friends with a minor African country? Does he show a similar interest in, say, Luxembourg? Has he attended any celebrations for Singapore?

Thomas Friedman has written an op-ed piece in the New York Times in which he says that the US needs to do nation-building all-right. It needs to re-build the US! Friedman wants a president who will have the guts to tell the American people "We are not who we think we are. We are living on borrowed time and borrowed dimes. We still have all the potential for greatness, but only if we get back to work on our country." Friedman bemoans the disasterous neocon policies of Bush and Cheney in Iraq and Afghanistan and he is right. He recounts how the US is falling behind even Singapore - a city state of only 4.5 million people. He sees world prominence going to India and China while the US mires itself in messy no-win situations for ideological reasons. Friedman is right. The US is at a tipping point. It can elect "more of the same McCain" or it can elect somebody who will turn it around.

Harper has delivered the goods. The CBC is reporting today that he went on a radio talk show while in Toronto for the 60th birthday bash and said that there are anti-semitic elements in Parliament who are questionning his policy on Israel, and that criticism of Israel is often a thinly-veiled form of anti-semitism. This is also being reported in the Vancouver Sun along with comments by Bob Rae, who got up in the house on Friday and called on Harper to name those anti-semites. Don't hold your breath, Bob. There are a number of people in the Jewish community who do not want to see an open discussion of Canada's policy towards Israel, or of events in the Middle East, and use the anti-semitism slander as a way to shut people up. It is a form of repression, of course, and now they've got the Prime Minister of the country doing it. This reminds me of the time Harper said that people who did not support his policy on Afghanistan were guilty of not supporting the troops. It's never about his policies, it seems, it's always about something else, and it's always somebody else's fault. The Jewish community has thrived in Canada and yet it seems the country is riddled with anti-semitism. Go figure.

I think there should be a online forum of citizens who have fulfilled a basic requirement for political savvy and that those citizens should have the power to recruit proxies from a certain of number of other citizens who did not fulfill the requirement. The number should be kept very small so we don't end up with the same damned party mess we have now. Political parties are just not the way to go. You end up with fossilization.

Robert Fisk wrote a great book about Lebanon called "Pity the Nation" It is a chronicle of the invasion of Lebanon by Israel during the late 1980s. While western journalists reported the event from Jerusalem (subject to heavy censorship from the IDF) or Cyprus (basically by hanging around the hotel bar at night), Fisk lived in Beirut throughout the whole sorry mess. Read Fisk if you want to know what is going on in Lebanon. He is the authority.

Yeah right. So what's a helicopter with a missile as opposed to a ground-based missle? 'We are better because we have a helicopter and spiffy uniforms.'? Israel so often declares that it is at war with Hamas but when Hamas behaves like an army, Israel whines about terrorism. What a crock. I think Carter did the best with the hand he was dealt. Look at interest rates when he came into office. The Iranians took hostages as soon as he took office. This happened on somebody else's watch. Guess who?

I cannot help but compare Hamas to Haganah....
