U.S. Presidential Elections 2008
HisSelf replied to moderateamericain's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
60% of polled Americans believe that Iraq was a mistake. McCain wants to stay in Iraq. We'll see what we shall see.. -

He couldn't land it but he "earned the right to wear a flight suit"? You can buy a flight suit at the Army-Navy. LOL. I love the way you quote detailed aircraft info. Apparently you think this gives you creds.

My mistake. It wasn't Limbuggh. It was O'Weawey. -

My favourite is the guy who invited the son of a 9/11 victim onto his show and then told him to "Just shut up." Was that Limbugh? They all look the same to me... -

This is in fact the essence of the American political system. In a developing country you have to give bribes to lower officials. In the US, you can give them straight to the President! Chretien had the balls to pass the Elections Funding Act. Whatever else his sins might have been, he just may have saved democracy in this country. -
What he said.

Thanks to Charles Anthony for being on the job. Religious discrimination is a crock. This may happen in Britain, but if it happens here, I think you would see a major outcry, no matter what the religion might be. Oops. Thinking about this a bit more... Wasn't there a problem in Montreal with a religious group that forced the YWCA to cover its windows so the religious people would not be offended by the site of female bodies in exercise gear?

I agree. Give him a majority, THEN he'll be a disaster. -

O goodness! I tot I tsaw a puddy cat! So by your thinking, all Catholics are child molesters? The Bible tells us to stone a few people, so are you saying anybody who follows the Bible should be out picking up stones? Jimmy Swaggart is gonna have words for you on Sunday. "I hear ya" brother... -

So freedom of religion is OK as long as you're not a Muslim -
Former Vancouver mayor Larry Campbell laid out a pretty good case for legalising and taxing the stuff. Google him. An argument that gets used over and over is the "leads to hard drugs" red herring. If it leads to hard drugs, it's because the only place to get marijuana is from the same guys who sell heroin and crack. People who smoke crack also drink beer. Does beer lead to crack? During the last round of hearings on the subject of decriminalization, the RCMP and the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police were both in favour. Many US states have now decriminalized marijuana poessession. These are sober-minded people who see the huge resources that go into policing a law that ruins the lives of many people over something that has yet to be medically proven a major health threat. Marijuana is illegal and categorized as a narcotic solely due to the efforts of one American crackpot named Anslinger (rhymes with arse-licker). You can Google him for background. Were it not for him, the situation would be very different with respect to pot. M.Dancer - you said Marijuana seeds are illegal in Canada. Can you provide a source? My understanding is that they are legal, active or not. As for not serving people who don't look like they have money - get a grip. However fancy the Summerhill booze store might be, it is not the Jamie Kennedy wine bar.

Historians Rate George W. Bush a “Failure”

Erm... There was no Al Qaida in Iraq until Bush and Cheney went in and turned the place into a no man's land. Bin Laden was on record saying he despised Saddam because he was an Arab leader who would not submit his country to Islamic law. There was never any proof that Iraq was in any way a threat to the US. The country targeted by Iraqi-funded terrorism was Israel - Saddam was giving $25,000 payments to the families of Palestinian suicide bombers. That, and the (largely ineffective) Scud missiles launched against Israel during the first Gulf War gave Israel reason to want Saddam gone. People think Iraq was a threat to the US because Bush and Cheney kept saying it over and over again. A classic case of repeating something over and over until it is taken for truth even though it is a bald-faced lie. This is the same principle that advertising works on, by the way. If Saddam had played his cards right, he could have become the Pan-Arab leader that Nasser set out to be. He was simply too much of a psychopath, so when crunch time came he was on his own. -

Aside from a brief spate of burqa-wearing as a political statement against the US, Palestinian women don't wear the Burqa. But hey, if it will make you feel better..... Bousini habibi -

Just because he set a goal and achieved it does not make him a good president. Regime change in Iraq (i.e. Civil War in Iraq) was a stupid thing to do. Afghanistan can hardly be said to be secured. On top of this, he has abrogated a lot of the "values" he says he is defending. The travesty of justice done in the Khadr case shows what happens when you suspend the rule of law and put suspects in the hands of thugs. The guy Khadr is supposed to have killed was apparently killed by friendly fire and Khadr was put in Gitmo just because he happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. What is doubly pathetic is that our own government raised nary a peep, while the Brits were getting their people out of Gitmo and brought home for trial. Bush has been a complete failure. Thank heavens we had a Prime Minister who was smart enough to say no. -

Good thing they watered down that Accountability Act, eh? -
You need to go back and review the shape of the US economy coming out of the Vietnam war. It wasn't a pretty picture. The Japanese do indeed hold a lot of US debt. As do the Arabs. And then along came China.... Why do you think the dollar is tanking? It is getting harder and harder to sell that stuff....

I am going to do you a favour and tell you something that nobody else seems to be willing to say. Your day is done. If it were not for your very unfortunate choice of posting name, you might be able to swing yourself over to McCain. That's all behind you now. You have lost. The people who drove your ideology are being made into objects of ridicule, as well they should. There is nothing more for you here. Move on.

The American financial interventions in Europe and Japan after the Second World War was damned smart. As was the Nixon (and I am no Nixon fan) trip to China. The glory trail stopped soon after. And your point about Iraq was? You seem to be dodging the issue, if I may speak politely...
