  1. I recall...exactly...the weapon pulled on me during the hold-up. Aimed right at my face...hard not to. It was a silver .45 Colt 1911 with a black grip. Stolen from a collector, obviously. Nice gun. No...you can't tell if it is loaded like with a revolver. But the hammer was back...

Well I had 10 of those so called holidays at the embassy, then it was off to Baidoa, then down to Kismayu, but most time was at the airport in Mog. A bunch of did go to the old port at the invite of the Gypos at New Years. Somed of the locals help usher in the new year with a few mortar rounds while we drove back to the airport. Fun times!

I was with the RCD at the airport, our compound was right across the road from the Kiwi's, great bunch of guys, RCD and Kiwi's. we were right at the edge of the taxi pad. Do you remember the main gate and road that led up to it? One day we were going out on patrol and passed a bunch of Americans, I don't remember if they were Marines or Rangers now. They had four or five Somali's face down on the ground under guard. They also had five 110mm artillery shells laid in a row. I remember we were wondering what the hell was going on. We were thinking it would be stupid to move an artillery piece up that close to the camp. It was only years later that I realised what they were doing. Fashioning an IED before IED's became common knowledge in the rest of the world. Good that the Americans got them, a bomb that size would be devastating.

We were based up at the north end of the rwy on the east side. We hung around with the Aussies quite a bit who were a little closer to the beach, and they ran the ATC there.
