  1. And yet another thread is hijacked somehow into a discussion about race...
  2. I don't remember much gov't blame going around with SARS. I thought the Ontario gov't and health officials did a good job of containing it. It came, some people got sick, health officials reacted swiftly, then it left. They definitely put the clamp down hard in the Ottawa area. No needless visitors at hospitals & retirement homes etc. i remember the 1st time i ever used one of those hand-sanitizer dispensers was after the SARS period when i went to visit a hospital. Gov't certainly has some responsibility to keep us safe. So you think the gov't should stop checking immigrants and refugees who come into our countries for TB, lice etc.? Gov't doesn't hold ALL responsibility for things like H1N1, but one of our governments key responsibilities is to keep the collective people safe, including from this stuff.
  3. If i ever have a daughter they will never be allowed to read one of those horrible women's fashion/lifestyle magazines in my house, ie: Cosmo and whatever. I've looked at them a few times and was disgusted with both the images but more importantly the articles. Its no wonder so many girls have eating disorders. I once had a friend who had an eating disorder and she read these mags. They make me sick.
  4. And Western liberalism and/or democracy wasn't??? HA! Britain controlled more of the world through colonialism than any empire in history not too many years ago. During the cold war the U.S. was just as obsessed with spreading democracy and destroying communism as the USSR was the opposite, as you say. They even once sent 58,000 of their own men to their deaths to do it. This is my last post responding to anything you say. It is such a waste of my life's precious time.
  5. Because he wants to be able to watch his soul get tortured in the depths of hell. He just loves torture that much!
  6. Well, i totally agree with you. That was part of what i meant by "containing". We certainly need to address the root of the problem and not the symptoms, as i stated before. That said, we'll never be able to please all Muslims, especially the fundamentalists. Fundamental Islam & Muslim culture is quite different from Western/judeo-christian culture. These two cultures are destined to clash and cause conflict. In this evermore globalizing world of ours, the goal must be to find the best means for our 2 cultures to co-exist together as peacefully as possible.
  7. We cannot kill every terrorist and dismantle every terror group. It's impossible. You cannot destroy an idea, or an ideology in this case. There are neo-nazi's and KKK members still walking around out there. Terrorism as a tool will also certainly never ever go away. The best we can do is to contain terrorism that seeks to harm us as best as we possibly can.
  8. Why should i care what a General says about what we should be doing in Afghanistan. The entire strategy there is fundamentally flawed so bad its a joke. They are trying to fight an entirely different kind of war using military strategies that are 60+ years old. Didn`t work in Vietnam, didn`t work in Iraq, didn`t work for the Soviet`s in Afghanistan, won`t work for us either. The West`s hair-trigger response to any huge security problem is to find the country or people responsible and bomb the hell out of them. Sorry that doesn`t work in every situation. We should be be trying to address the root causes of the entire problem of transnational terrorism, and not just fighting the symptoms.
  9. I think a better question to ask is who are these morons who are actually willing to PAY to hear George W. Bush speak.
  10. One of the very top , if not #1, indicators of crime is poverty. It's no secret that a lack of education breeds poverty, therefore a lack of education will also breed crime. Input this into the behaviour of these thugs and we can see some of the factors that lead to them, and also how to help solve this problem.
  11. I was not condoning Communism as a whole. Soviet Russia, especially under Stalin, was horrid. This thread simply asked if there were any positive aspects to Communist and I named some. 60+ million people were killed in WWII alone. If the Soviet-US bipolar "Cold War" situation was not such, and there was another international war between the Great Powers like WWI or WWII there would have many more deaths than actually occurred during that time period. If the people of the USSR were poor during the 1930's, it was because the gov't let them be. But it is a fact that the USSR kept its economic strength through the 1930's compared to the other great powers in Europe etc. (money may not have gone to the people properly, but the country still had money). The USSR and the U.S. were the only 2 countries to economically survive the 1930's/WWII era and come out the other side as great power states. That is why the US and the USSR were became locked in the Cold War post-WWII. Communism and USSR's insulation from the world capitalist collapse of the 30's was a key reason for this. It certainly wasn't because they didn't take their licks during WWII like virtually all European countries did also. Lictor, just calm down and step off a bit dude. I'm not promoting Communism. Communism IS STUPID!! Got it? I'm just replying to the freakin thread. Go grab a cup of tea and relax my friend, and stop filtering my posts through your warped lens.
  12. Oh, if only Marx' Communism probably implemented a democratically elected government & not dictatorship. That would have been truly interesting to see the results. Much of the crap that has been these pseudo-communist states (a true Marx Communist system has never been implemented) has to do with the usually brutal & repressive dictatorships that lead the "communist" countries. Communism achieved positive things. It kept the USSR isolated from the capitalist world economy during the 1930's depression, which spared the Russians some misery (though they had enough misery with Stalin slaughtering them). This in turn helped the Russians be economically able to kick Nazi butt during WWII. Man almost certainly landed on the moon earlier in history because of the Cold War space race. The Cold War was also probably one of the most peaceful times in modern history (not saying much). At least since the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648 and the establishment of the international sovereign state system. Before the Cold War, war between nations was almost constant for centuries. The Cold War period was relatively peaceful in comparison, despite many dead Vietnamese etc. I'm there are other examples i can think of but i'm tired and lazy.
  13. Wow, that would be quite difficult to define. I dunno.
  14. So they're gonna vote again. Thoughts? I says half-hearted tip of the cap to Karzai, even though it took him a darn long to come to his senses after a lot of pressure. There will probably be less fraud in the next voting, but massive fraud will still persist...though not as stupidly and blatant. Your next "democratically elected" President of Afghanistan, Mr. Karzai. Yet again. And the puppet-master wiggles his fingers...
  15. So Shady, how would your ultra-partisan self spin this story if this was the Republicans "fault"?
  16. Hmm interesting. Well there weren't any on sale at eBay.ca, you must have went to eBay.com. Obviously they do sell it then. But as an aside they do have a ban on selling Nazi memorabilia, or at least they did a few years ago not sure if they changed it & too lazy to check.
  17. I wouldn't really care if a Klan guy walked around with his garb on. He's basically just be wearing a big sign saying "i'm an idiot".
  18. As long as you show your face for things like voting, drivers license photos etc. i don't really care if they wear it or not. What's next? They'll take away my have right to walk around on halloween dressed as a ghost with a white sheet over my head?
  19. Ya, Chapters can sell whatever they want. I still think it's stupid though, and i don't agree with it. What if amazon.ca stopped selling it? Then you'll out of luck, unless you go to the library or hit up eBay....oh wait i checked its not on eBay either (eBay has a policy where they don't allow Nazi items to be sold). Pardon me while i go read "eBay/Chapters 451".
  20. Never mind, i found this article online. Chapters/Indigo HAS banned Mein Kampf since 2001: http://www.fpp.co.uk/Hitler/MeinKampf/Canada_ban.html Do you agree with this? I think its censorship and completely stupid.
  21. Last year my sister wanted to read Hitler's "Mein Kampf", so i went to Chapters bookstore (Canadian bookstore chain) to find the book and buy it for her as a present. Chapters said they didn't have it. When i went back home i check the chapters website and searches, and they didn't even carry it online. I checked again today out of curiousity and they still don't carry it online, even though they have tons of books discussing Mein Kampf. Yet they don't have the actual book itself. I checked amazon.ca and they have the book. Is this Chapters censoring/banning the book? Or do they just not carry it for some very odd reason given the historical importance of the book. Anyone know/work there
  22. Planet Terror was for sure the better of the Grindhouse flicks. Death Proof got really good about halfway through. The 1st half was horribly slow. Way too much boring banter about nothing. Some people call that kind of scriptwriting "artistic". I call it "boring".
  23. People should read peer-reviewed scholarly sources on climate change, not some reporter's findings. How the heck do we know his "facts" and stats are correct? Same goes with Al Gore.
  24. pretty much agree 100%
