The bravest person in Canada
Moonlight Graham replied to WWWTT's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
This girl didn't interrupt anything. The Speech from the Throne continued without interruption. People are saying this was "contempt of Parliament", yet i don't see where standing quietly in the middle of the floor holding a piece of paper does anything of the sort that would break the specific rules that constitute contempt of Parliament. I would argue that an MP's yelling over another MP and interrupting each other during Question Period and otherwise is far more disrupting to the proceedings of Parliament than what that page did. -
He's out of the country to be "treated for wounds" as an excuse to flee and save face. It was recently reported that his injuries are "worse than expected" and he'll have to stay in Saudi Arabia longer than thought. Oh, politics.

The Theft Of Aboriginal Identity.
Moonlight Graham replied to Oleg Bach's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
You're saying Hinduism is responsible for the poverty/violence in/around India? I'm sure British imperialism had NOTHING to do with that, right? Also, Gandhi was a Hindu, and he acted more closely to the teachings of Jesus Christ than most Christians ever have. -

lol! Being secular is completely different than espousing atheism. Let the parents do the religious stuff, or set up a "Christian" daycare. If you raised your kids to be Catholic, i'd bet you'd be mighty PO'd if their daycare was teaching them to believe in Hinduism. -
Non-recent Quotes: your favorites

This is to distinguish from August1991's thread of very recent quotes in the news. This thread is for us to post any quotes we like that aren't as recent, ie: classic or historical quotes. I'll start: "If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” - Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Conservative get ready for senate reform
Moonlight Graham replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Well, if you can provide a link to what Senators do the other 2 days per week, or 25 weeks of the year, i'd honestly like to know. My poli-sci Canadian politics textbook by Rand Dyck states: -

You could make a case for that. But only a case, it would have to tried in court of course. Can you disrupt Parliament by simply standing somewhere silently holding a sign? The throne speech was never actually interrupted. -

i like this idea. MP's looking like Nascar drivers, even ads hanging off Parliament Hill. Or "remember to vote in the BMO Bank of Montreal 2011 federal election!". Easy money. -

She graduated with a political science degree specializing in international development at the University of Ottawa. I doubt she'll be working at CIDA any time soon! -

You and I sit here everyday expressing our opinions on this forum, having our views exposed to several dozen people. She takes 20 seconds to hold a sign and gets the lead story on the national news, is interviewed by national news media to further express her views (however one may feel about them), and has her views effectively exposed to millions of people. Yup, real stupid. -

Yes, huge security concerns. What are they going to do, search under the skirt of every Page that walks into Parliament Hill looking for signs? She did absolutely nothing illegal. She exercised her Charter rights. She was fired for what she did, and likely rightly so, but if she wanted to she could take it to court and make an interesting case out of it. -

I agree, i was just talking relative to most other countries, ours is fairly healthy, but not without flaws. -
Mitt Romney has a cool first (or more accurately 'middle') name.

Whats your point? Im giving reasons why i support this girl. They dont all need to be a response to other peoples opinions. This girl done good. That's my thesis statement. -
Why do women/men shave hair differently?
Moonlight Graham replied to August1991's topic in Arts and Culture
On another note, kissing a woman with a mustache sucks. -

culture. social norms. Legs aren't usually seen as a sexual turn-on for women, they generally dont care about hairy legs. If most women thought hairy legs were hideous & shaved legs much more attractive, i'd be in the shower breaking out the Gillette Mach whatever right now! -

I think she has guts for doing that. Although what she was protesting aka 'Harper' was a somewhat ridiculous, i mean we don't need an Arab-style uprising since we are a healthy democracy that just had an election that elected the man and his party. But she still has every right to protest, it is guaranteed to her in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Her protest was peaceful and silent, i'm sure Gandhi would be proud. It certainly beats taking a gun (or a pie) and physically attacking the man. It got her to the very top of the national headlines to get whatever message (however you may feel about it) she had out. I tip my cap to her. -
Conservative get ready for senate reform
Moonlight Graham replied to Topaz's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Massive enough to work about 3 days a week. They do some fine work in committees , i never said they are useless, but they aren't exactly going to keel over from work-related stress. -
Which isn't as bad as it sounds, because they all have great health insurance coverage

Not bloody likely! From the article you posted: In other words, hey sounds great!...just don't let it affect me & my cushy job. Easily one of the best jobs in Canada. Work 3 days a week (plus lots of extra vacation time), fantastic pay/benefits, not overly demanding work, virtual guaranteed job security until you're about ready to die, no boss riding your ass. Why ruin a great thing! -
Canada to create Military Bases Abroad
Moonlight Graham replied to Smallc's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Interesting. Here's what the original CBC article stated: Here's what that gazette article states, a quote from MacKay or Jay Paxton (whoever that is): So both articles say 'no permanent bases', but suggest...something. Whatever, it could still mean Canada rents out a hanger or 2 at an airfield in these countries. maybe that doesn't qualify as 'large permanent bases'. If i had to choose, i'd go with the Le Devour article over the CPC gov on this one. -

I dont like city bus strikes or Canada Post strikes. IMO they should both be designated as "essential services", forcing these people to work even if they strike.
