I think it can, yes. The liberals got into a nasty habit of promising whatever people wanted to hear before an election, then reneging on so much of it after being elected. Yes virtually all politicians do this, but the Liberals were particularly bad. Telling the truth is sometimes not what the electorate wants to hear. On the other hand, isn't a party that governs based on what most people want a very democratic way to govern? Don't we want our MP's/government to vote the way we want them to, rather than what they believe?

Osama Bin Laden is Dead
Moonlight Graham replied to Smallc's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Anybody here want to kill Osama bin Laden??!? Here's your chance! Play the video game called Bin Laden Raid. It was one of the first games based on the OBL compound raid to go up on the web apparently. A web-based game so its free and no lengthy download/installs. It's not bad, i actually was more interested in exploring the compound, & the graphics are much better than those crude animations from the news. Could use some night-vision goggles and faster way to move though. -
Also, all of this "we need to define our ideology" stuff is nonesense. The fact that since at least the Chretien years the federal Libs have often simply governed based on what is popular and what would get them elected is what helped drive the success of the Chretien gov't. Governing based on what most of the public believes/wants rather than a dead-set ideology ie: "conservative" or "social democratic" is a brilliant & simple way for a party to maintain power, IMO, and obviously never bothered voters before the sponsorship scandal.

I'm not much of a Liberal supporter, but the "this is Armageddon for the Liberals" thinking based on the last election is just way overblown. Many people are scurrying to figure out how to redefine or reshape the party. What is our party ideology? Should we lean center or more left-of-center. Should we merge with the NDP? This is all crap. The Libs don't need to redefine their party ideology. They are a political powerhouse, and recently have simply made some very bad policy & party decisions that are, IMO, easily rectifiable. Here's the major reasons why the Liberals suck ass right now: - Years of corruption and arrogance by the Chretien gov finally caught up with them, culminating in the sponsorship scandal, with Canadians angry enough to throw them out for the CPC in 2006. Libs never recover from the scandal fallout in Quebec. - Liberals choose Dion as leader, Dion is horrid, Libs continue to sputter. - Libs choose Iggy as leader, he's even worse, and lefties all jump on the snowballing NDP bandwagon as a left-wing alternative. Lying scumbag leaders like Dalton McGuinty in ON don't help the Liberal cause. Ok, so what's the main pattern here? Horrible leadership + corrupt/lying politicians. Therefore, the solution is to find a leader who is likable, competent, & electable (ie: NOT Bob Rae!), while working to be more honest to repair their reputation as lying/corrupt scumbags. Then just hope the electorate doesn't get too comfy with Layton. All easier said than done, but that's it!

Israel's march to the Dark Ages

If they become like Muslims...there will be peace at last! Or maybe not. I hear Israelis and Palestinians yell at themselves in the mirror. -
I think that Hasidic newspaper had it bang on. In fact, i'm masturbating to that photo right now!

Famous pic of Hillary (hand over mouth), Barack & co. looking concerned in the situation room wasn't them "watching" the OBL raid live. from The Telegraph: Some media spin put to rest. -
Genetic, or learned behaviour? I'm sure it's both in different cases.

you roll your eyes so much i imagine you have a couple of detached retinas by now. True?

Agreed. Partisan intellectual lightweights they both are.

Osama Bin Laden is Dead
Moonlight Graham replied to Smallc's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
That's a good point. With all the crap that occurs everyday, the huge debate over taking OBL alive or dead is odd. US drones strikes into Pakistan have killed approximately 2000+ "bad guys" and civilians over the last several years. Who knows how many surrendering/unarmed terrorists and/or Taliban have been popped without trial. Who cares, right? And i agree with Tim, a trial would be pointless since the verdict would be predetermined. I'm more disturbed by the mobs of people celebrating a person's deaths like it was mardi gras. "Closure" my ass. Justice my ass, it was cold-blooded vengeance. Scores of people find closure without needing somebody dead. I'm also having a grand ole time watching Obama admin spin this situation to his political gain, while the gov is having major problems getting their stories straight. -
A flawed article, for sure. Read it before. Warmth? ya sure. Harper has a far greater intellect than Bush, without question.

I've been watching the first few UFC tournaments from 1993-1994 in the last week. They have "no rules"!!!...(except no eye-gouging, biting, or ball-kicking). Funny how the least-violent guy has been cleaning up, he just makes people go to sleep. -
Environment Minister says "sorry First Nations". lol. Ooopsies again!

Osama Bin Laden is Dead
Moonlight Graham replied to Smallc's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
The US seems content to violate international law and state sovereignty at its whim. Iraq, Pakistan drones, and now this raid. Making a nuke state continually po'd probably isn't the wisest idea. OBL is dead, and the world is likely better off for it. Maybe. I guess we may see. The admin is already saying torture in gitmo helped lead them to OBL. Right out of the Bush propaganda playbook Likely gets Obama a 2nd term, especially since he seems to be taking most of the credit. Hundred bucks says the WH doesn't release the name(s) of the ops who killed OBL, Obama wouldn't want the hero spotlight to be taken off of him! -

A couple of years ago i wouldn't want to fill out a census because of "privacy" and whatnot, if i had the choice i'd throw it in the trash. However, i've learned that the census is extremely valuable for researchers & academics on a large variety of issues/studies. Many social/economic problems can be and have been helped by this research by a wide variety of academic fields, including social work, psychology, economics, political science, etc. Filling out these census forms sucks, but the info helps make our country a better place to live.

Osama Bin Laden is Dead

Personally, i think they just didn't want to get greedy. Kill the mofo, let it be done. If they took him alive, what if they were attacked on the way to the chopper by ISI or some bin Laden guards hiding down the street that were alerted? What if he was taken alive and the the chopper crashed like the other one, or was shot down, and he escaped? I think that its likely the chopper that crashed changed the game plan a bit also, ie: ok Plan B, just shoot the mofo and get outta here. -

You misread what i said. Of course he isn't guaranteed anything, but bloodlines/family/associations give him a huge leg up. My point is who you know, and what your last name is etc. makes a difference in modern politics. -

I think he did better to do KO damage vs Shields. He did land some big shots on Shields via the looping right before the eye problem. Kosh got his face messed up mostly from the 5 rounds of constant jabs. F*** constant jabs! The man is a karate master, he should be busting guy's jaws in half with his feet. I appreciate technical ability like jabs, but its a friggin' fight! They're out there to kick ass. Your goal shouldn't be to nab a 5-round win from the judges. The major reason why they have round limits is because during the early UFC's there were no time limits and the events went too long & past the pay-per-view timeslot limits. Then they introduced time limits to fix the problem, but there were unfair draws since they didn't use judges...so now we have rounds and judges. Also, agree Shields needed to do more. He should have done more in round 1 & 2 when their bodies weren't as sweaty. He got good grab of GSP's leg in round 1 & almost took him down. He tried a few more takedowns in later rounds but was ineffective. Crappy gameplan + inferior takedown skills. -

Brilliant talent, but Anderson Silva is a wuss. He's afraid to get hit. He waits and waits for someone to attack so he can counter, then when the crowd starts to boo because the fight is starting suck because he's not doing anything he starts doing is stupid antics to make it look like he's "doing something" or to try to be entertaining. GSP isn't a wuss IMO. I think he is just such a perfectionist that he doesn't want to risk putting himself into a position where he would be left vulnerable to any kind of attack if he can avoid it. He had that streak of consecutive rounds won, and that's how he did it. But i think he should realize that it's not a big deal if a guy can get a hold on you or maybe swing at your face because he has the talent to overcome that & still dominate. His big swings in the Shields fight where KO-type shots, but risk free. I liked to see him do this, and i liked the spinning side-kicks because he was aggressive, but it wasn't enough. -

My list shows the first name in each family row which represented the original politician who got there not by bloodline, and the names after that show politicians who got power, or at least a very good chance of power, in large part due to their bloodline to the first name in the row. Ie: Bill was prez, and Hilary got public notoriety from it which gave her a far, far better shot at being Senator/Sec of state/ Prez candidate compared to if nobody had known who she was prior. Nobody gives a shit about Justin Trudeau except for the fact that his daddy was "the great leader", and they have some illogical fantasy that Pierre magic has rubbed off on him. As i've shown, this is far from being just an American phenomenon. -
Petition for voting system reform
Moonlight Graham replied to juzt4me's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
As do I. Our current system is not "undemocratic", it is just less democratic than what it could be under a proper PR system. Democracy, at its most ideal, is 1 vote for 1 person. Each person has an equal vote with equal represention. If ie: the Bloc can get so many seats in the past with so few votes, and the NDP and Greens traditionally get fewer seats with more popular vote, this is an area that can and should be improved. In a system like PR, every vote counts. I live in a consistently strong conservative riding, so if i wanted to vote for any other party it is usually virtually useless & somewhat of a useless vote. Many people in my situation don`t even bother to vote because voting in the past has made no difference, therefore they just stay at home. With PR this gives everyone everywhere even more of a reason to vote. This was a major flaw in the Ontario PR proposal. Pools should not be chosen by parties. How about a system where a party candidate who runs but loses in their riding but finishes with the highest percentage of votes in their riding compared to other are members of their party are plucked to be added as an MP? This makes them more accountable, and maybe they can serve in a larger or overlapping regional district located in or near their original riding so that they are still representing voters somewhere & are accountable. -

One could argue by a popular line of thinking that donating is in your best interest because it makes you feel good, which is in your self-interest. If you kept the money and bought something nice for yourself the benefit of that would likely be eclipsed by the negative feelings of guilt & shame you would feel...which is not in your self-interest. I see merits in both yours and this argument. Maybe it all depends on what the priorities of your self-interests are? Some self-interests only benefit yourself, others benefit both yourself and others. Personally i think the latter maximizes the good and happiness in this world.
