This tacky to the extreme, and really makes no commercial sense. And for the record, the commercialism of Christmas and Easter is equally disgusting. But i've been raised to love my Cadbury chocolate eggs and shiny electronics wrapped under the Jesus Tree. If i ever have kids hopefully i'll be smart enough not to spoil them on Xmas morning as much as i was.

Do we not also help the Chinese economy by having Canadian products manufactured in China, like so many other nations? I doubt this falls under the "imports" label. Does anyone know how much in manufacturing business Canada gives to the Chinese? I'm curious to see exactly how large (or small) the number is. If it is somewhat significant this could be leverage for Canada re: China.

Yes i think consumerism is a key factor. However, other huge factors include the advent of the birth control pill for women in the 1960's. The baby boomer women now had control of their own bodies and didn't pump out babies when their husbands chose not to wear condoms. The big women's movement that began in the 1960's also was huge. Women wanted to be more equal to males in many regards, and thought they should have the right to have full careers of their own outside the home and not stay at home and be Miss Homemaker with 5 kids. So now they have 1 or 2 kids and ship them to daycare and/or full-day kindergarten and go back to work. There are certainly many contributing reasons for the low birthrate in Caucasian-dominated western countries. But if there's one thing that would certainly increase the birthrate, it would be to ban the birth control pill...but we know that will never happen.

Hadn't seen the idea mentioned before on these forums, though i know mine isn't an original idea generally. Both are excellent points. It would be very risky politically for a party to propose such. There would certainly be vote losses in key places like the GTA. Parties now seem to do the opposite, by being quite supportive of immigration/multiculturalism etc. in order to appeal the ever-increasing immigrant/visible minority voters in Canada. I agree that immigration is beneficial, and that we should be more selective. It certainly isn't about racism, as i would be very much against it if say the U.K. offered to send us most of their Caucasians who are or had been in prison. It's about the quality of people we let it in. Making it mandatory for immigrants to have a full-time job offer would make it too difficult i would think. And i agree that family reunification should be limited. ie: bringing in older family members does nothing but add to our population problem.

Instead of letting poor quality immigrants into the country and spending money on processing them, paying for them to be on welfare etc., and giving them access to publicly funded systems like healthcare and heavily subsidized post-secondary education that many Canadians have been paying into for their whole lives (as have their parents and grandparents etc.), how about we instead take some of that money and pay couples who are already Canadian to have more children? Oh and this money may also have the benefit of possibly giving couples more of an incentive to have one of the parents stay home and actually raise their damn kids instead of sending them off to strangers at day care...which will also likely be publicly funded someday soon.

So if you were walking down the street at night with your wife and young kids and a guy with a knife jumped out and attacked you & your family, and you managed to punch him and he fell to the ground, are you saying you would "do the manly thing" and wait for him to get back up and start attacking you & your family again instead of beating the crap out of him while he's on the ground to disarm/incapacitate him? There isn't that much difference really. The biggest difference is that of scale. Olbermann's is only one show (albeit the most popular i'd imagine), not an entire network of stations. But the conflict of interest is similar. I liked some of Keith's rants, especially during the Bush era of hell. But i dont really give a woop, wasnt much an MSNBC fan, far too biased like FOX News (though not as bad), so i dont even subscribe to either of those channels anymore. I hated that rachel maddow show, uhhgg.

He was a child soldier fighting on the side of insurgents in Afghanistan against the U.S. If he's a "war criminal" or a "terrorist", then every NATO soldier is the same. This is an amazing lecture on addictions and why they occur and how the brain functions with addictive behaviour. This talk is by physician & best-selling author Gabor Mate, who "for over ten years has been the staff physician at the Portland Hotel, a residence and harm reduction facility in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside". The video is long, but give it 5-6 minutes and see if it interests you. Intellectually fascinating in my opinion. This man is brilliant.

Your conclusions are nothing but guesses, and they are grossly incorrect. I have worked with a social agency that dealt with young people in their late-teens & 20's who are homeless or have been homeless. The vast majority of them have been abused as children sexually/physically. Many of them have run away or otherwise left home at a young age & live on the streets, or have been through "the system" being taken away from their parents as youth by Children's Aid Society or whatnot, been in and out of group homes, and ran away from those too. Even if they stay in those homes, they are completely f'ed up because their parents f'ed them up. Many of them have serious drug or other addiction problems. Not because they are losers or idiots, but because their lives are complete shit with tremendous emotional/mental problems that most of us can't begin to imagine and thus they turn to drugs/alcohol as means to get through the days without killing themselves. Many homeless people are actually very strong individuals, because so many others have or would have committed suicide if they were in the same situation. They are true survivors who keep going even in the worst possible human conditions (in Canada at least). Also, it is very difficult and possibly inappropriate to compare homeless people in Canada/U.S, and those in poor countries like India. haha yes. Also, plastic bags take tremendously less energy to recycle than paper bags. Read that somewhere in the media last week. Idea: why don't they start getting after big businesses who are wasteful and throw out tons of crap (often good things too, like "old" computers). Of course, just throwing things in the dumpster is cheaper & easier than sorting things for recycling.

That is called Foreign Direct Investing (or FDI). ie: More medium or long-term investment with people in the country (ie: foreign businesses/contractors) building things like infrastructure, schools etc. Canada i'm sure does this as it isn't some weird/new concept, although it is very expensive and quite rare for private companies to do similar things. It is hard & expensive for private companies, or, well, anyone to do this in very poor countries because they lack basic infrastructure such as electricity, running water, telecommunication, roads etc. These leads to something they call BYOI (Bring Your Own Infrastructure) where it can cost up to 25% more to do such projects because companies must drill for their own water and set-up their own power generators etc. Countries and private companies are also reluctant to do such direct investments in the poorest of countries because there are usually political and economic instability in these countries, so medium-longterm projects are risky. There also factors such as wars or social unrest and scare donors and private investors away. However, yes it would be nice to see more of these FDI projects done as to keep the money out of the hands of corrupt elites.

most of them wouldn't end the human race. And oil crash would be catastrophic, many would die, but it couldn't kill everyone. Cyberterrorism also likely wouldn't be humanity-destroying. A super disease/virus, or anything that would block out the sun (meteor, massive nuclear war etc.) are the best bets i think.
