How should we make China pay?
Moonlight Graham replied to QuebecOverCanada's topic in The Rest of the World
2. And that's a big problem, especially with a totalitarian government with no ethics. The WHO shouldn't be political, it should be independent and non-political. I've always thought the Harper gov were just a bunch of arses when they shunned the UN continuously. Now I'm starting to think that maybe there was something to that. Maybe our current gov shouldn't be flying around the world kissing the arses of dictatorships to get a spot on the UNSC. Exactly what kind of arse kissing have we had to engage in? What kind of concessions and "favours" have these regimes been asking Canada in return for their vote? Given the SNC-Lavalin affair, how far would Canada sell out its ideals for a seat? The legitimacy of the UN project continues to fray, it's a shame. Its idealism has inevitably succumbed to real-world politics. Give disgusting governments a seat at the table and they will behave like disgusting governments. -

I don't know if there's any definite proof of that, but China has been gaining influence in the WHO and been giving more money to them. Google "China WHO" and click on the "news" tab on google and you'll get what you're looking for. For some reason, the head of the WHO has been covering for the China gov and defending them as "transparent". Politics seems to have entered the WHO, and it has cost lives. Canada took WHO advice, advice that was wrong. Don't limit travel it will do nothing, masks aren't effective etc. They've reversed a lot of this and now say the opposite. It's been a sh!t show and someone should be accountable for the incompetence because people are dead because of it. It's really easy for a political organization to become complacent and corrupt when there's no accountability or competition. -

You form a united organization of democratic countries and then you all agree to punish using the same methods so that China can't lash out at any one country without a response from all. Collective security. Let's make China our b!tch. -
Did Trudeau Fail His Country On Covid-19

Trump has been a fool. But let's not also forget that there's a lot of Americans who are straight-up as ignorant as Trump and won't follow social distancing guidelines. -
I'm not sure he's asking for countries to give 10% of global GDP to the UN. He's saying it will take 10% of global GDP to stabilize the global economy, through things like employment insurance, bailing out companies etc, and he's also talking about injecting money via IMF etc to developing countries. Canada has already injected hundreds of billions into their own economy. 10% of Canada GDP to stabilize our economy would be around 200 billion, which sounds about right based on what our government has been spending. Probably will be much more than that. Nobody is going to give 10% of their GDP to the UN.

I wonder what the increase in germophobia will be. Honestly I don't expect many longterm changes. There's no point in having these things in place if this virus is gone. It's been 20 years since SARS, and that wasn't even like this. This is a once-in-a-century thing. -
A piece of bread costs 20 cents. Bananas are 20 cents each. I'm sure it happens but I would imagine in most cases where kids aren't fed it is due to neglect, not lack of money.
-
All kids should be fed. I would think the parents should do it, not the schools. If parents aren't doing it they should be fined.

Well I guess a lack of nationalism is clearly also a political act with an agenda too. Everyone's stance on nationalism has an ideological goal of some kind. "Obama is an American" is a nationalistic phrase. -

All Americans are Americans. Got it. I do think we should be embracing nationalism, as in we all belong to this one group called a country, rather than sub-national identities that divide everyone. We need to unite people and make everyone feel they are a part of the same family. Black, white, man, women, who gives a crap. Unfortunately nationalism is apparently an evil word these days. Canada is a post-national state, yada yada. I'm glad Michael Hardner supports American nationalism *gasp*. -

Yes he is. What's your point? -
So you're saying conservatives are sadistic and evil? Ok.

We live in a society where we have breakfast programs for students because some parents are too stupid or lazy to feed their children in the morning.
-
Even CPP is for people too dumb enough to save for their own retirement. I'd rather keep my own CPP contributions and invest them myself, but alas some people are stupid.

Most of Gates' wealth is based on selling a gazillion copes of DOS and Windows, which he himself created. You are accusing him of IP theft somehow? Bill Gates' software enabled for vast increases in productivity for countless businesses, teachers, students, governments etc and has helped create ridiculous amounts of more wealth for these people, even helping to lift billions out of poverty. But he's evil? Ok.
-
Because if you have more money than someone else it means you're evil.
-
People can do whatever they wish with their own money. It's theirs. They can keep it all, burn it, save it, hoard it, spend it, invest it, give it all away. Who cares. It's none of our business.

Obama is as white as he is black. If he can be called a black POTUS, i guess he can also be called a white POTUS. -
Ok, I assume you have your own money from your own efforts then. Can I have some of it for free even though I did nothing to deserve it? I assume you'll give your money to charity when you die and not your kids.
