Ok, what does that have to do with the masks? They prevent you from breathing in the virus. The virus is contracted by getting it inside your body especially via a wet membrane, like your eyes, tongue, mouth, nose, throat, lungs. That's why healthcare workers are wearing masks and face shields. How in the f*** do masks not prevent infection among the general public? Because that would take supplies away from healthcare workers.

Fact: the WHO is STILL saying that masks don't prevent infection for healthy individuals in the general public or in contact with sick people. https://www.who.int/publications-detail/advice-on-the-use-of-masks-in-the-community-during-home-care-and-in-healthcare-settings-in-the-context-of-the-novel-coronavirus-(2019-ncov)-outbreak "There is limited evidence that wearing a medical mask by healthy individuals in the households or among contacts of a sick patient, or among attendees of mass gatherings may be beneficial as a preventive measure. However, there is currently no evidence that wearing a mask (whether medical or other types) by healthy persons in the wider community setting, including universal community masking, can prevent them from infection with respiratory viruses, including COVID-19." No type of mask will prevent infection? Even military-style masks? Are you serious? Lies. And yet in the same publication they then recommend healthy people at home and health care workers wear masks when in the same room of people who are infected. HUH? They also, in bold, continually say things like "Medical masks should be reserved for health care workers". If they don't work as preventative measures in healthy people then why save them for healthy healthcare workers? I highly suspect the reason is because the WHO wants to dissuade healthy people from buying masks since they're in short supply thus will take them away from healthcare workers, since they do need them most. They also say "The use of medical masks in the community may create a false sense of security, with neglect of other essential measures", which is true, but that isn't a reason to dissuade people from using masks in public. We're being lied to. They're willing to give the public false info for "the greater good"

Agreed. Sometimes society needs changing. But it's also far easier to change our own actions to achieve better life results than to change society and government policy. People, including us on here, waste a lot of time yammering on for society to change when we could focus that effort on improving our own lives. For instance, Jim Crow laws should obviously have been abolished. But now people are asking for reparations for slavery in the US. Which is fine. But I would think instead of african-americans waiting endlessly for white people and the government to "save them", it would be much easier for poor black people to raise their lot by forcing their kids to study hard, stay in school, and teach them to not have kids out of wedlock.

I think white Canada should be: - congratulated for being one of the least racist societies in the world and in human history. - criticized for the racism that still exists.

Why are so many Arabs racist? Or Jews? Or Americans? Or Chinese? Or Italians? Or Swedes?

Tribalism. Distrust and fear/resentment toward the out-group. The thinking is: you're not one of "us", your culture and behaviour is inferior to ours, you being in our community is like a trespassing making our society worse, we don't want "more" of you here, we don't want you "replacing us" or moving in our territory etc. So this leads to resentful and hateful actions or words. It's an old human survival instinct i think. My tribe vs your tribe. Protect the tribe from outside threats. Every ethnic group and country has many people racist towards others. As said, Canada probably one of the least and most inclusive.

Did you ever hear anything on the Immigration front?
Moonlight Graham replied to cougar's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't think it's humane to let people from other countries into our country who may be carrying the virus during a state of emergency. Self-quarantine isn't effective if you're living with other people or in a building where other people live, need to go get groceries etc. It also isn't monitored by anyone unless you're in forced lockdown in a military base like some travelers were, which IMO should be mandatory for all travelers at this point. Is it worth risking Canadian lives to poach the most skilled/talented immigrants? We should let in the ones that are necessary, like medical professionals etc, those needed in food production etc. I think the people let in should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis based on need, especially with our economy the way it is and unemployment sky-high. The parent/grandparent reunification program has been halted thankfully. For obvious reasons. The refugee program has been halted, no hearings taking place. So claimants in Canada already in the process currently just get to chillax while using up government benefits like free health care. -

https://www.cicnews.com/2020/04/canada-is-sending-the-right-immigration-signals-to-the-world-0414110.html Canada may be the most open country on the planet right now. Countries around the world have shut their borders, closed their airports, and imposed lockdowns to fight the deadly coronavirus. Canada, too, has implemented such emergency measures. But, it is also seeking to strike a balance between containing COVID-19 while enabling global talent and foreign nationals into the country. This is due to Canada’s recognition that newcomers are part of the solution to supporting its economy during this challenging period, as well as the country’s unwavering commitment to reuniting family members even in the wake of its travel restrictions. Canada doing everything it can to accommodate immigrants On March 16, 2020, Canada unveiled special immigration measures related to the coronavirus pandemic. The most notable measure was the decision to restrict travel into the country until June 30th, although several major exceptions were made. For instance, Canada has stated that no immigration application will be refused due to incomplete documentation. Rather, the federal government will provide applicants with more time to obtain their documents before it makes a decision on their application. ...Nonetheless, Canada is doing its best to adapt which is sending the right signals to foreign nationals around the world. That is: we will do everything we can to accommodate your immigration goals and help you during this period of need. -
How much refugees are costing us

How can someone complain about migrants when it means something other that what that article makes it seem? -
Super low oil prices doesn't help the green economy, it actually makes the transition harder. It just means it's going to be cheaper than ever for people to use gas. Why would people/businesses want to switch to EVs when gas prices are actually going down significantly? It may put US and Canadian oil companies out of business or reduce their production (which is one goal for environmentalists), but OPEC/Middle east oil will continue to flow and gas will continue to be burned.

Flaky Trudeau 'humiliated' Japan, Vietnam, Australia
Moonlight Graham replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Love the virtue signalling he made the countries to do. "Progressive" Agreement? Lol what? : Even more annoying for the other leaders was they felt they had “bent over backwards” for Canada during the negotiations, allowing for the clunky new name requested by the Canadian delegation, among other things. ...Less than a week later, Trudeau told the World Economic Forum in Davos that Canada was back in TPP-11, although he made sure to call it the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. -
When people talk about white privilege they aren't talking about wealth, they're talking about unearned advantages based on race, like when a white manager company will hire a white person or an arab if everything else is equal. And it's true. My point is that many arabs would hire another arab over a white person too, same with landlords looking for renters etc. It just so happens that in Canada whites have most of the wealth and population, so non-whites have an uphill battle in more of these cases compared to whites. You can have poor white people of course, but it can be a bit easier for a poor white person to get out of poverty than a poor black person in Canada because of the white privilege that exists.
-
Well, there's black privilege in the US, it's just not very strong especially compared to white privilege, because of the reasons you mention and others. Whites also don't dictate all markets and industries in USA. ie: Jewish Americans are very financially successful, and are known to hire their own just as whites do. But if you call them out on it you're labeled an anti-semite. White collective guilt again strikes its ugly head and gets in the way of facts. White people have been the most powerful race in the world for the last 500+ years, and with that power have done a lot of good and bad things. Turns out they're human like every other race. Every other race do good and bad things too with what power they have, they're human too. Blacks were ensalved by whites, and blacks enslaved each other to sell Africans to whites. Best not to feel too much pride or shame for your race, they're just people. White pride and white guilt lead to stupid actions & policies that are often racist.

Donald Trump vs Joe Biden
Moonlight Graham replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I remember Biden when he was running for POTUS against Obama and Hillary in 2008. He doesn't speak off the cuff well, he's always putting his foot in his mouth. There's a reason why he lost to them, and why Obama hid Joe for 8 years. -
Donald Trump vs Joe Biden
Moonlight Graham replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I think Biden should and will nominate Kamala Harris as his running mate, She will tear him to shreds in debates and whatnot. She'll help get the female and black/minority vote that Obama got. And unlike Biden, she's sharp as a knife. -
Having known many people and families of many different races, I know that virtually every race/ethnicity has many people within it that will often favour people of their own race and not like or distrust certain other races/ethnicity. I'm not saying this is morally just, i'm just saying racism is prevalent in every culture. If whites have an advantage in the West and if white privilege exists, which I think it does unfortunately, it's because there's more white people in western countries than any other race/ethnicity. If ie: Asians were the majority in the Canada, there certainly would be asian privilege just like there's asian privilege in asian countries. For that reason whites shouldn't hold collective guilt for white privilege, though they should do their best to stop racism from happening just like every other ethnicity should. Virtually every country in the world has privilege that's held by the majority group(s). There's also countless businesses in Canada run by non-whites that have racist hiring practices, countless racist non-white landlords, but we rarely hear about this in the news, because of the double-standard. Racism is racism and it's all wrong.

Countries are more powerful if they band together. That's why ie: NATO and OPEC exist. The US can go on it's own if it wants and if it has to, but when they have it often hasn't turned out well. The West should figure out a united response. Canada's downfall is its "niceness" and naivety, US's downfall is its arrogance. Both current PM and POTUS represent that perfectly.
