Exactly LOL It's too bad the left like to demonize and label people who have different points of view. I admit Beck can be a bit over the top sometimes, but this was a peaceful event where even the lib left media failed to find racism and yet, the left attacks it like rabid dogs. check out the daily caller to see how many time 'predominately white' is mentions, yet no one mentions Sharpton and his 'predominantly black' rally. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” — Martin Luther King, Jr. Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2010/08/29/what-theyre-saying-about-the-828-rally/#ixzz0y2fgGlwG

I listen to Tareq Fatah now and then on CFRB, he's very good for a liberal - Most people are afraid to speak out as they will be immediately labelled as racist or Islamophobic, the left has done a pretty good job of labelling and demonizing people.

I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this or did I miss among all the hyperpole somewhere ? After reading and watching, I thought Glenn Beck had a very positive message and did his best to keep it non-political/non-partisan while on the on the other hand, Al Sharpton made fun of the Beck rally being quite negative toward it. Beck, Palin and other speakers at the Restoring Honour Rally asked the crowd to help restore traditional American values and honour Martin Luther King's message (where MLK's niece, Alveda King, chose to speak) I found portions of Sharpton's messages to be quite negative and possibly serving to increase the divide, while Beck was inclusive, Sharpton was not. Quite a troubling picture actually. Also note that the CBC chose to underestimate the crowd by tens of thousands.

Anti-Mosque Hysteria Elsewhere, Too
scribblet replied to bloodyminded's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I came across this excellent article on the subject of the Ground Zero Mosque, or the Cordoba Initiative, now renamed Park 51 for politically correct purposes. It speaks to the issue of silencing debate with accusations of racism etc. http://www.firstthings.com/onthesquare/2010/08/rhetorical-axes-and-park51 cont... -
Worker's Unions and Activism in Foreign Policy
scribblet replied to Bonam's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
IMO they should not be allowed to spend union dues on political activism, unless it is specifically related to labour issues. Not sure if things have changed but a union employee should be able to opt out of at least some portion of union dues if they object to their money going to a political cause they disagree with. Unions should stick to protecting and helping their employees. -

This forum seems to have deteriorated, it goes off on unrelated tangents having nothing to do with the subject, or good governance -

Mosque going up in NYC building

Just a question, when a thread gets this long should another one be started - who's going to read 118 pages, and besides they go way off on tangents LOL The Imam and founder of the Cordoba Initiative Imam Rauf has publicly endorsed the most extreme and repressive side of Muslim theocracy. People who defend this ‘initiative’ talking about tolerance, might want to ask it works both ways, as tolerance is not a word that immediately comes to mind when talking about Islam. Although Hitchens has been in favour of the building you might want to read what he has to say here http://www.slate.com/id/2264770 and why suspicion of Islam it is by no means irrational. In particular this part: . -
Yes, he has an unbroken record for about 12 years, he drove the Lumina (it was mine) on our insurance. I gave it to him 4 years ago so he had to take a separate policy out, same company so continuity. If he moved to where we live his rate would drop to $980.00 I know all of it because we pay his premiums for him to help him out. Obviously he didn't read his notice and I didn't know until I checked my bank account. I have spoken twice to the insurance company who agree that he has a clean record, there are no claims, tickets or anything, that is not in question with the insurance co. I've been told that all rates in the GTA have gone up, his was so high because of the car he drives (a 99 Lumina)which has a high number of accidents and injuries , yadda yadda. I don't buy that although there are a large no. of Chev Luminas on the road. Secondly and most likely, this company applied early for their rate increases and got it, other companies haven't applied theirs yet, it's coming. He will be switching to CAA when he gets the money to pay the cancellation fee, we will save that in about 4 months.

Ottawa: Terrorist Group Arrested
scribblet replied to Kanadischer's topic in Local Politics in Canada
Actually, it's a serious issue and I believe it should be in Federal politics. We need to speak to the issue of the radicalization of the youth and where are they learning this, if not from Mosques ? -
I haven't read the whole thread on this, but, my son who lives in the GTA just saw his insurance premiums rise by $100.00 a month, no claims, no tickets, etc. etc. His yearly premium with no collision (it's an old car) is $2956. per year. If he moved out of town to where we are, it would go down to $980.00 but it's too far to commute. BTW, for calculating insurance purposes, the GTA can stretch from Burlington to Oshawa. I've been phoning around for him and did find a couple of places about $600.00 cheaper including CAA, but his company wants $250.00 to cancel the policy. What he will gamble on I suppose, is that the new company won't raise it as much next year. I suppose he got notice and didn't read it, now it's too late. Scam artists.

What should we have done with the Tamil ship?
scribblet replied to Moonlight Graham's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Perhaps it's because people are fed up of being taken advantage of, especially in such a clear cut case as this one. Not only that, we are enabling human traffickers. Never mind, play the race card and all dissent stops. -

There is a lawsuit still going on from the last census re: privacy, people were fighting it then for the same reasons they don't want it now.

Ship of Sri Lankan Tamils Arrives in Canada
scribblet replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Exactly !! We are being taken for a ride, these scam artists will be fed, housed and clothed while legitimate applicants have to wait longer for their turn. As Monty Solsberg said: And it is quite the ruse considering that, while 492 so-called Tamil “migrants” - Correction: Queue-jumpers, scam artists, back-door invaders, and no doubt more than a few terrorists linked to the blood-mongering Tamil Tigers - are still being processed as refugees in British Columbia, all while the UN’s refugee commission is returning thousands of them from India to Sri Lanka because conditions there are no longer considered dire. So call it what it is. Call it fraud. It is not racist to discuss this or immigration in general, people only use that as a mean to stifle discussion. -
Ship of Sri Lankan Tamils Arrives in Canada
scribblet replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
We should all have had enough of their protests and whining. This will cost Canada millions giving human traffickers a boost as there will be many more when they see how Canada handles this. We welcome genuine refugees which these people are not, they are queue jumpers who are thumbing their noses at legal immigrants and Canadian hospitality. Too late for these people, but any more human trafficking should be turned back and not allowed into our waters. -
Ship of Sri Lankan Tamils Arrives in Canada
scribblet replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Actually the U.N. (High Comm. for refugees) has changed the guidelines for Sri Lanka, it now says that Tamils are no longer at risk of indiscriminate harm and actually, Sri Lankan asylum seekers decreased by 35 per cent during the first six months of this year. They are not genuine refugees there should be returned to their point of departure. -
It's all fear mongering, the sky is falling crap they've been spouting for years which has never materialized.

What Should The New NYC Gay Bar Be Named?
scribblet replied to Shady's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I think they should name the bar - The Pig and Whistle, or The Pig in a Poke, or The Pig and Bacon..... -
The CPC is far from being Reform and in fact is more like the old Red Tories, except that they do want to keep the actual parliamentary reform ideas if they can. e.g. elected senate, fixed election dates, nothing bad about that. The old PC party would never have voted to merge if there was no agreement on policies and principles, trotting the old booga boohs doesn't cut it anymore.

Tories scrapping long form census
scribblet replied to Moonbox's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You really believe that the long form is relevant - really how would you rate or believe the answers to this: i) do you own a gun? ii) if so, is it registered?
