  1. That's what happens when people become disillusioned with the sitting leader of our "benign dictatorship." Anyone, speaking of hope and change becomes a breathe of fresh air. It's a tough spot for JT. Like Harper did for so long on social issues, leaders try to sit on the fence to appeal to as many voters as possible. I fully support the idea of assisted suicide, it's just the humane thing to do. Unfortunately, JT has to win a popularity contest and doesn't want to scare voters away over a single issue. Should he do the right thing by supporting it and appealing to the Lib and Dipper base, but scare away some of the disenfranchised CPC support? It's a very similar situation to Harper's gay marriage dilemma. Coming out in favour of human rights would have angered much of Harper's base.
  2. Nice to hear. It seems like a solid little device that will just keep getting better with increased app support. I wonder how long it will be until Chromecast and Apple TV functionality will simply be software options on all Smart TVs.
  3. I'm glad cons have a sane option in T.O. Unfortunately, Tory and those slow enough to vote Tommy Boy could end up splitting the conservative vote letting another candidate through.
  4. I didn't realize that Ken Ham was selling Creationist Junk Bonds to fund construction of an Ark theme park. Sounds like a solid investment. lol. http://goo.gl/u4rdBN

And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness."

I bet it gets even scarier if you surveye the Tea Party. I heard one of them recently interviewed on CBC telling us the US is not a democracy.

It's funny what people believe. Where I work there is a lottery pool because "you never know". The lottery retirement fund is what 34% of Canadians believe in. Now that's plain stupid. Do you buy lottery tickets? Sucker.

Would you describe the ISS orbit as near earth?

  6. Tonight, I tried the "Take The Black Stout" of the Game of Thrones series by Brewery Ommegang out of Cooperstown NY. I give the packaging and label art top marks, but I'm not a fan of the beer itself. Here is the pretty spot on description from the label itself: There is a very slight hint of sweetness, but the flavour is dominated by a smoky bitterness. I prefer stouts to be smooth and sweet, this one is too hoppy for my taste. Still, I'm glad I tried it. Can't wait to taste the Iron Throne Blonde and the Fire & Blood Red. http://www.ommegang.com/got/take_the_black.php
  7. Treat that special someone well today because Steak and BJ Day is just one month away.

Speaking of economic illiterate, who do you boys think caused those gas shortages? And ya, all that damn cheap gas caused Exxon Mobil to become the most profitable corp., ever, on the planet.

  8. In "Capitalism - A Love Story" Moore touches on this. New pilots qualify for food stamps. Sully, the hero that landed on the Hudson River, has had has pay cut by 40% along with his pension. Here's the 5 minute segment:
  9. Thread summary: 1) Some think allowing an audience to witness a giraffe gutted, prepped and fed to lions is outrageous. Some don't. 2) Some think that all zoos are cruel. Some don't. 3) Some are now arguing about posting etiquette and debate tactics. You're caught up.
  10. So many species are being wiped out in the wild. The rate of deforestation quadrupled between 2008 and 2011, primarily to increase beef production. I think zoos and outdoor education centres play a huge role in connecting young people to the natural world. Many zoos are simply pathetic and should be shut down, but well run facilities play an important role in fostering conservationist attitudes. Without that first hand connection people don't even see the potential problem in destroying natural habitats to create highways, parking lots and pipelines. Or torturing living creatures for cheap burgers and McNuggets. Granted, no zoo is ideal and many should be shut down but I think decent facilities do far more good than harm.
  11. Make Tommy Boy watch while he rides a horse topless.
  12. Interesting US viewing trends. Cable use is plummeting, satellite usage is flat, while Netflix is taking off. The battle for the big telco's will be to supply us with internet service.
  13. I recommend sampling the Mill Street lineup. It's a large micro brewer, with some excellent products. If you want to stick with something lower in flavour like Keiths, try their Organic and Stock Ale. Want a little more substance, try the Tankhouse, a unique and flavourful darkish amber. Their Lemon Tea Ale is outstanding, especially in the summer and both their Cobblestone Stout and Vanilla Porter are worth a try. Fortunately, the LCBO often carries a Mill Street sampler six pack.
  14. A person claiming that aliens absolutely exist would be equivalent to an atheist that claims gods absolutely do not exist. Both are belief without evidence, a practice worthy of criticism. All belief without evidence, including the religious variety, is worthy of criticism but not in equal amounts.
  15. Agreed. Creationist rationale is also backwards. Rather using evidence to lead to a conclusion, they start with a conclusion and ignore any evidence that doesn't fit. Creationists start with the assumption that the bible is absolutely correct and then ignore geological records, dating methods, speciation events, cosmological observations, etc.
  16. You can question the parenting choice to bring a child to the event if you like. My son would be interested in such a demonstration but my daughter would not. It's the responsibility of the parents involved to make that choice. I don't see an issue with showing the preparation of an animal though. We contribute to the torture and slaughter of billions upon billions of animals every year to feed ourselves. The fact that many deem the prep of a giraffe carcass too gruesome for the public really highlights our hypocrisy. In this case a giraffe was going to be euthanized, the zoo used the meat to feed other animals and the opportunity to educate.
  17. “You always know the mark of a coward. A coward hides behind freedom. A brave person stands in front of freedom and defends it for others. Don't hide behind the Constitution or the Bible. If you're against gay marriage, just be honest, put a scarlet 'H' on your shirt, and say, 'I am a homophobe!" - henry Rollins

Backasswards coward route as usual. The brave action would be to demand equal rights for everyone, even if you find them icky.

Shady, cowards try to manipulate people with immature trolling comments. Real people don't get shrill every time a pet topic comes up.

  18. Hmmm, I wonder how much air time Fox News and Glenn Beck will dedicate to this revelation. Fox News did happen to mention the "stand down" conspiracy 85 times during prime time broadcasts. http://thinkprogress.org/world/2014/02/11/3276171/gop-benghazi-military-hasc/
  19. Only if it turns out that you really like it. I've never tried rutabagas, crack or cronuts.
  20. You keep emphasizing that prepping the animal should not have been viewed by the public or children. I fail to see why this an issue. In the first place the people in attendance chose to witness the event. Secondly, it would have been a great biology lesson. I'm sure it covered anatomy and the unique features of the giraffe, but I also hope it touched on meat in our own food system. The giraffe wasn't a nameless farm animal, so I would expect that parents with small children that had an attachment to it would not have attended the demonstration. On that note though, farm kids see or eat animals they've had a relationship with all the time. Finally, humans are animals that eat animals. 40 million cows and 9 billion chickens are killed every year for consumption in the US alone. I think its important that people understand more about what this entails.
  21. The EAZA link isn't currently working. However, I'm sure it mentioned that the zoo doesn't sterilize its animals and thus relocates or euthanizes animals it cannot house. In this case the family genes of the giraffe are already well represened in other zoos so feeding the beast to the lions was the best conservational choice. People watch animals eat meat every day in zoos and on tv programs, why should a public display of prepping the meat be considered unacceptable? If killing animals for food should be kept behind closed doors then perhaps we have a massive ethical issue to deal with in our own food system. I think people should be made aware of exactly how our own food is routinely tortured before being processed, packaged and prepared for dinner.
  22. I agree...but I think it's time for the LCBO to go as well. With both entities out of the way, some great specialty liquor and beer stores will appear and we will have convenient access to the big brands at grocery and convenience stores. However, our access to a diverse selection of craft products will likely be more limited than it is now. Especially in smaller markets.
  23. The selection at the Beer Store is better than it will be at most convenience and grocery stores when the monopoly is finally toppled. Still, it is time for it to go.
  24. Give him time to consult CPC talking points for an answer. PIK, You've managed to stray beyond the Harper Party comfort zone on this one (in public at least), though the Republicans would be happy to provide you with an opinion.
