  1. I ordered a Chromecast today, a friend confirmed that the browser mirroring bugs have been dealt with. I also found out that the Roku box will re-flash with US firmware when connected to a US internet source. Thus it will run Hulu+ and other US only services. A colleague runs a two router setup at home. Off the first he setup a home and guest network using the Canadian internet signal. He then installed a VPN on the second router and setup a US WiFi network. He can now use US Netflix, Hulu+, Google Play, Amazon Prime, etc. for media content and still connect his other devices to a native signal. This setup is a little more elegant that what I am doing with one router and a VPN so I plan to add a second one asap. He also used Tomato firmware on his second router rather than dd-wrt or open-wrt. I've never tried it but it sounds like a more user friendly option.
  2. I read this story the other day just after watching doc outlining how we deal with our toxic sewage sludge. Basically we dump it on fields, pastures, crops, etc. Anyway I was glad to see the collapse study was picked up by some mainstream news outlets. It seems that “ecological strain” and “economic stratification” consistently plague collapsing societies. Maybe one day we'll be responsible enough to place ecological and social well being ahead of GDP growth and corporate bottom lines.
  3. The Canucks are rebuilding and they did manage to free up some cap room. I was able to watch Bobby Lu in net against the Bruins last week in Florida. He was the player of the game for the first two periods. The Bruins managed to make the Panthers look like a CHL team though, and lit them up in the third.
  4. “I understand why the one percent — the richest one percent — vote Republican. They deserve those votes. You know what, they represent the richest one percent perfectly. Anybody else who does? Just corporate America’s useful idiots.” - Bill Maher

Americans can vote anyway they choose...one percent or not. Many vote Republican.

  5. Fact Checking Ford: Starting this summer this topic could be a thread in itself. I enjoyed this article that checked in on some of Ford's claims. http://www.thestar.com/news/city_hall/toronto2014election/2014/03/17/campaign_lie_detector_factchecking_rob_ford_olivia_chow_karen_stintz.html The billion dollars in savings claim is the most ridiculous. Removing the car tax actually cost the city money, but it did save residents $200M. However, he then counts increasing user fees by $24M as saving the city money...so he tries to play it both ways. Oh, and residents will also be on the hook for a new $745M Scarborough subway tax which he doesn't include at all. In the end his number is completely fictitious.
  6. My comment referred to Conservative politicians that attempted to benefit from Ford's popularity early on, not the voters. Aligning one's self with a man like Rob, even two years ago, was a calculated risk. They did it to gain some con popularity in what is typically left-land, but it didn't payoff.

  9. Hmmm, I don't think this is over. "Stopping short of threatening to pull out of the province, Mr. Marchionne noted U.S. states and Mexico had expressed interest in winning the company’s investment. Mexico, with its low wages and proximity to the U.S. and Latin American markets, has seen rapid growth in its auto sector." "we reserve the right, as is true for all global manufacturers, to reassess our position as conditions change" "Marchionne added, On a personal note, as a Canadian, I regret my failure in having been unable to convey the highly competitive nature of markets that offer manufacturing opportunities to carmakers that operate on a global scale. Some of the shots across the bow following our initial approaches to the Federal and Provincial governments reveal, apart from political convenience, a somewhat restricted view of Canada as an industrial player in what has become a borderless economy. "
  10. I fully, understand why other cons piled on the Ford bandwagon in the early days. He was a popular con in lefty land, why not use him to boost support for other cons? However, now that he has become a colossal embarrassment, they deserve a little backlash for associating themselves with him earlier. If the buffoon cared at all about conservatism he'd step down to avoid stealing support from Tory and further tarnishing the c word. I'd like to see Grapes interviewed about Tommy Boy now.
  11. Starting the rebuild. It will be hard to get a fair price for Kesler now.
  12. Kimmel has skewered the buffoon for 3 straight shows now. I appreciate the fact that he has managed to say positive things about Toronto while poking fun at the fat, white, conservative, joke.
  13. If I am able to get US apps like HULU running I will keep the device otherwise I will sell it on Kijiji to get a few $$ back.
  14. Does browser mirroring work well now? An early criticism was that it was quite buggy.
  15. Here is an article about changing the Netflix region within a Roku box. I may try it out and see if I can access some US apps. http://www.avforums.com/threads/guide-roku-changing-netflix-regions-quick-and-easy.1776722/ There are many apps and games available for the Roku but most are pretty weak. A VPN or browser extension that spoofs a US location is necessary for HULU but when dealing with the app this usually only has to be done once, during setup. When used through a browser it will check your region every time.
  16. I have a Roku 3. If you are going that route I recommend buying one in the US with the US firmware. It is fast and has some decent features but the Canadian content is weak, you're really just limited to Netflix and YouTube. The US device will allow you to use Hulu+ and Amazon.
  17. I do both. I use Netflix for movies, older shows that I didn't watch when they were new and exclusive shows like House Of Cards and Orange Is The New Black. I then use Hulu+ for current content. Though, I am finding I care less about current content than I used to. The Hulu shows I watch are almost exclusively time sensitive content like Colbert, The Daily Show, The Tonight Show, etc.
  18. A solid game by Reimer last night, which is good news for the buds. Unfortunately, Columbus has had their number this season.
  19. Here is a Lifehacker comparison of TV streaming services. I use a combination of Netflix and Hulu+ and have been very happy with them.
  20. For $35 its a handy gadget, though more cumbersome and with fewer features than the nettop setup I've tested. I will definitely pick one up to play with.
  21. After seeing Kimmel video I feel embarrassed for Toronto. I don't even live there but it's a great city. I can't imagine how residents feel. He reminds me of a manic, crazy, Charlie Sheen after the split from Two and a Half Men. Maybe the best thing for him and Toronto would be a health scare that forces him to take some time away to rest and clear his head.

Ethnocentrism? The cited story is published on an American site, by a southerner. I also don't think handing out guns, jives with the wishes of the man the stories make Jesus out to be.

  23. That`s a horrible idea. The point of the bill is to discourage young voters from showing up at the polls. Raising awareness of the bill will not achieve that goal. The best option is to force it through quickly and as quietly as possible.
  24. So Repub Jim Buchy of Ohio wants to ban abortion. When asked why do women get abortions he responds with, "I don't know I've never really thought about it." A sad and honest response from a man trying to impose his views on women.
