  1. Icebreaking is such a slow process I don’t know if an icebreaker could really intercept a threat up there. Watching an icebreaker pursue another icebreaker might be like the world’s slowest car chase, a turtle trying to head off another turtle. Realistically threats are probably best responded to by air. I think the icebreaker is more to support planned missions as opposed to a first responder situation. We should have some that’s for sure not sure how many though.
  2. They have the Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2, which is the most modern missile in that class but it is primarily a medium range self-defence missile with limited range and AFAIK no ability to intercept ballistic missiles. I believe the US has mostly shot down Houthi drones/missiles with the Standard SM-2, an Area Air Defence and ABM missile that our now decommissioned Destroyers used to have and the future CSC ships will have. That said the Brits and French have used Aster15 missiles to down Houthi craft. These have shorter range than our ESSM to down Houthi craft so it seems that we could shoot them down if we wanted to. I think mostly we don’t have the spare personnel or budget. Plus this government is ideologically disinclined to participate in any military action much less one associated with Israel-Palestine.
  3. We do but they are Coast Guard not Navy. I believe the Argentine and Japanese ships you are referring to are Polar Class 4, “year-round operations in thick first year ice with muti-year inclusions”. CCG has 2 purpose-built PC4 Icebreakers (Louis St Laurent and Terry Fox) and 4 smaller ships that were recently upgraded to PC4. I really don’t find too many ships rated better than PC 4 except for some industrial and scientific ones, and one exotic French arctic cruise ship. There has never been a PC1 ship built which is the highest rating. USCG and CCG are both currently constructing PC2 icebreakers, with CCGS John G Diefenbaker and a yet unnamed sister ship to be among of the world’s most powerful icebreakers when completed, expected in 2030….another shipbuilding boondoggle as they were originally planned to be in service in 2017
  4. I don’t think any aircraft carrier is capable of operating in the arctic. In fact I don’t believe there are any armed warships that can break winter arctic ice. Icebreaking is tedious slow-going work at only a few knots pace with lots of reversing involved. Any icebreaker or warship following an icebreaker in am assault is a sitting duck. Russia is currently building a warship that is equivalent to the Harry DeWolf/Svalbard class in ice capability but will carry cruise missiles and a 76mm gun. Assuming those ships ever become operational we will have an armed surface threat at least in summer seasons but AFAIK none exist currently. The US has talked about building armed icebreakers but AFAIK there’s nothing imminent. Meanwhile the CCG breaks arctic ice for the RCN when needed for exercises. In addition to the 4 fighter FOLs there is the naval facility at Nanisivik that is expected to be fully operational this year.
  5. That’s the Canadian colonial mentality unfortunately. We believe our place in the world is to be nothing more than a subservient second-rate “helper” to “real” countries like UK and US and to supply them with raw materials for their advanced industries at the expense of our own. We even let smaller countries like Australia and Brazil colonize our economy and eat our lunch.
  6. Agree. Aircraft carriers are not needed to defend the North, there are RCAF Forward Operating Locations for NORAD fighters at Yellowknife, Inuvik, Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit, not to mention allied bases in Alaska and Greenland. An aircraft carrier in the arctic is useless as it can’t break ice and AFAIK they haven’t invented an icebreaker large enough to break ice for a carrier
  7. Correct. Although I believe the primary purpose of the Banshee was fleet air defence, and only limited ground attack capability as a secondary role.
  8. Not even. The late 1940s-vintage Banshees were retired in 1962 without replacement. From then on the only fixed wing aircraft the Bonnie carried was the turboprop Grumman Tracker submarine hunter, in addition to Sea King helicopters.
  9. Actually, those 2 small escort carriers, HMS Nabob and HMS Puncher, were British-owned ships. They carried British aircraft and pilots, however the ship itself was crewed and commanded by Canadians under a loan agreement. After the war Canada similarly “borrowed” 2 other UK ships, all part of preparation for Canada to develop its own carrier capability with the one and only 100% Canadian owned and operated aircraft carrier, HMCS Bonaventure (1957-1970).
  10. How about we subject everyone in Canada including citizens to the same values test and eject anyone who fails? I meant we’ve seen at least SOME Canadians on this forum support massacre of Palestinians as punishment for Oct7 and that’s really not so different when you consider that those who support Oct 7 consider it punishment for earlier Israeli misdeeds. It’s really the same mentality. And when you look at some of the uglier fringes of the right like Andrew Tate and Patriot Front and the like those aren’t really western values. Lastly I’ll say that most Irish, along with Southern, Eastern and Central European immi , if they came here prior to WW2 or even shortly thereafter, were similarly seen as poor, primitive, crude, unfamiliar with our democratic principles, etc. And they also brought their ethnic identities and w them and had demonstrations and riots and so forth. Everything you’re saying now has been said for centuries about immigrants from Italy, Greece, Poland, etc etc and even the Irish. And of course the Jews.
  11. Well you got the first 8 words right but then you go downhill fast from there! 1) The 2 consecutive UCP governments that have ruled Alberta since April 2019 have been anti-Renewable and anti-Ottawa and anti-Liberal, which pretty much describes EVERY Alberta government in modern history except for Rachel Notley’s short-lived NDP government ….more on that in a moment. To suggest Smith and/or Kenney purposely sabotaged Alberta’s electricity grid woth “supposedly unreliable renewables just to please JT is ludicrous, considering their political identity is largely based on fighting and attacking JT. Furthermore Alberta has the only PRIVATIZED grid in Canada, meaning the province doesn’t build generators, private investors do…more on that in a moment also 3) The bulk of Alberta’s renewable energy was built or initiated by private enterprise in response to incentives created under Rachel Notley’s NDP government which was in power May 2015-Apri 2019. Not to please Trudeau but because as a left wing government Notley also understand renewable energy is the future 4) The private industry didn’t massively invest in Alberta renewables in 2015-2019 because of JT’s energy policy that was released in August 2023. Even if the them-newly elected first-term JT was “talking about it “ that early on , investors wouldn’t have been investing billions on something that was years away from having any details figured out and wasn’t even in writing under a just-elected government. 5) As I mentioned in my earlier post Renewables form part of the mix for BASE LOAD demand not peak demand Gas plants are ideal for PEAK demand as they can quickly be turned on and off unlike most other sources. As Ive said many times now but you continue to ignore because it’s an inconvenient truth: Alberta’s own regulator said the shortage was due to just 2 gas plants being offline (one broke down due to the cold). It did not say that Alberta had too much renewables. In fact it said renewables made up the shortfall omce the wind picked up while the gas plants remained offline. 6( As mentioned The federal energy policy still allows provinces to build new gas plants and operate them for 20 years thereafter So again you overreach in your need to blame everything including the weather on JT
  12. I never said they didn’t have ANY but as the link I shared said they had TOO FEW Everyone understands how wind and solar work. They are for generating BASE-LOAD electricity not PEAK electricity. PEAK electricity should come fe sour that can quickly turn on amd off, like gas plants. Albertas problem is that its privatized grid (where private companies build their own generating stations) does not possess the right mix of power sources….which is not the same thing as it had too much renewable or that JT is somehow to blame. They only had 2 gas generators available for peak demand and both were offline. 13. I didn’t mean to imply Israel is just as evil as Hamas bit they are not good guys. In the way that I think a serial killer who strangles hookers is a lot more evil than a wealthy oligarch who has an investigative reporter murdered. You know Hamas is chaotic evil vs Likud’s lawful evil, The Joker bs Darth Vader. No it’s not meaningless. It’s just a fact that Occupation leads to terrorism and the only way off the merry-go-round is an exit strategy to end the occupation. Likud governments have never wanted that. There must be TWO peace partners, not one who surrendered unilaterally. Right now and for the last 30 years there have been zero. Its not like Germans today still want to exterminate Jews and invade Europe but are afraid of the consequences. Germans turned to extremism due to the hardship of life in the Weimar Republic, imposed on them by the Allied powers after World War One. After World War Two the Allies were determined not to repeat their mistakes and instead adopted the Marshall Plan to rebuild Germany as a modern prosperous economy. Germans had prosperous lives and a future to look forward to and abandoned extremist ideology. That’s the “Broader conditions” that lead to peace instead of war.
  14. 1) That’s not true at all. Most wars don’t end that way, even when one side decisively defeats the other. Most end simply because one or both sides decide that continuing conflict isn’t sustainable (politically, economically militarily or otherwise) or there is a regime change in one of the countries and an anri-war government comes to power. Israel is a perfect example. Israel successfully defended itself from multiple invasion attempts amd defeated the attacking forces bit it didn’t “crush” or “take over” Egypt or anyone else. The attacking force were defeated in the field and what was left of them returned home. A peace treaty was signed after the last one the Egyptian President Was assassinated for it much like the Israeli PM was assassinated for peace with Palestinians but unlike Israel the Egyptian peace held. Vietnam is another example. Vietnam is friendly trading partner with US despite defeating US military in that war but never “taking over” USA. Iran-Iraq War, War of 1812, countless European continental wars, there are so many where this is the case. But the larger point is to refute the claim that so long as Palestinians exist on this earth they will try to annihilate and destroy Israel even if they have their own prosperous state and happy lives and Im telling you that is just the same BS people say regarding every conflict. My point about Germany and Israel is to prove that a state who was ideologically committed on exterminating jews is now friendly with Israel. Nobody said “Germans can’t be allowed to have their own state they’ll never stop invading Europe and exterminating Jews”. Even though Germany had a track record of invading Europe. . People understood that you can have a German state without it being a Nazi state as these are not the same thing. The allies through the Marshall plan ensured it would be a successful state so people would not have motivation to join extremist causes. Controlling their lives is how they for into this mess in the first place. Continued occupation will only lead to continued terrorism, and intensified occupation will only lead to intensified terrorism period. Terrorism is like crime, you can only control it so much with cops and soldiers, most you have eliminate the socio-political factor ls that cause people to choose these activities.
  15. Yeah what rant? I posted his the artificial picture and made a couple jokes about it. That’s not a rant
  16. Canada set to participate in NATO Exercise Steadfast Defender 2024 Department of National Defence Press Release | January 25, 2024 Estimated reading time 6 minutes, 3 seconds. An RCAF CH-148 Cyclone helicopter over water. Cpl Jessica Fox/12 Wing Imaging Services Photo The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is set to participate in the largest NATO exercise in decades that will serve to rehearse NATO’s Deterrence and Defence plans to counter threats to the Euro-Atlantic area. Approximately 1,000 CAF sailors, soldiers, aviators, and special forces members, will demonstrate NATO’s ability to conduct sustained, multi-domain defensive operations over a period of several months, simulating an Article 5 attack by an adversary with similar capabilities. The exercise will run from the end of January until the end of May 2024, and is divided into two main parts. The first part will be largely maritime based and will focus on defence of the North Atlantic and Arctic waters, while the second part will test NATO’s ability to rapidly deploy reinforcements across all domains in defence of Central and Eastern Europe. CAF assets that will be participating include Canadian patrol frigate HMCS Charlottetown with an embarked CH-148 Cyclone helicopter, and the Canadian-led enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group in Latvia, including for the first time, a Canadian Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank squadron. The exercise will also serve as an important milestone for the Canadian Army’s future Forward Land Forces Multinational Brigade Latvia, as the second part of the exercise will see the future command team integrate with their higher NATO command in the planning and execution of defensive combat operations. NATO is a cornerstone of Canada’s Defence Policy, and Canada has been contributing to NATO’s enhanced defence and deterrence measures in Europe since the invasion of Crimea in 2014. This exercise will provide a valuable opportunity to strengthen the CAF’s ability to project, integrate, and sustain operations within the NATO command and control structure. “Canada’s participation in Exercise Steadfast Defender sends a strong message about our ability to operate with NATO Allies and our continued contribution to the defence of Europe. Canada remains unwavering in its commitments to defend our shared values and interests, and to be a reliable partner in peace and security,” said Bill Blair, Canada’s minister of national defensce. “The deployment of CAF personnel and assets alongside NATO and Allied forces in Alliance territory serves as a powerful and unmistakable message of deterrence to potential adversaries and reassurance to Allies. This collective display of strength and readiness reinforces our commitment to safeguarding the security and stability of the region, sending a clear signal that any threat to our shared values and interests will be met with a unified and resolute response,” said Gen Wayne Eyre, chief of the defence staff. “The next few months will see our sailors, soldiers, and aviators engage in rigorous training and operational activities in diverse and challenging environments. This period will not only test their skills and capabilities but also provide an opportunity to forge strong and valuable partnerships with our NATO allies and partners, further enhancing our collective readiness and interoperability,’ said vice-admiral Bob Auchterlonie, commander of Canadian Joint Operations Command. Quick Facts In development for over three years, Steadfast Defender 24 will see over 90,000 military personnel, as well as more than 50 naval assets, over 80 aircraft, and over 1,100 combat vehicles, exercised across multiple domains (maritime, land, air space, and cyber) through a series of integrated plans, overseen by an enhanced command structure. Canadian Army personnel will participate to exercise Crystal Arrow in Latvia in March, as well as exercise Spring Storm in Estonia in May. Additionally, Canadian Special Operation Forces Command members will participate in exercise Nordic Response in Norway in March. These exercises fall under the wider umbrella of Steadfast Defender 24 and are opportunities for soldiers to closely work with our NATO allies. In Summer 2024, Canada will also deploy four CH-146 Griffon helicopters to Latvia and periodically deploy CH-147 Chinooks as well, starting in the Fall of 2025. Op Reassurance is Canada’s contribution to NATO deterrence and defence measures in Central and Eastern Europe and is Canada’s largest overseas mission with approximately 1,000 personnel deployed. The mission is set to grow to up to 2,200 persistently deployed by 2026.This press release was prepared and distributed by Canada’s Department of National Defence https://skiesmag.com/press-releases/canada-set-to-participate-in-nato-exercise-steadfast-defender-2024/?utm_source=skies-daily-news-todays-news&utm_campaign=skies-daily-news&utm_medium=email&utm_term=todays-news&utm_content=V1
  17. What rant? All I did was laugh at that fact that Trump can’t even POSE for a photo as a religious person, he has AI generate a fake image of him doing it….and even the AI creates him looking like the antichrist. And his followers still believe it.
  18. So you’re not familiar with the movie eh? Ok ill stop hinting tjis taking too li In the image Trump tweeted of himself praying in church, he has 6 fingers on his right hand. It’s funny, every time the famously debauched man tries to post an image of him looking religious he comes out looking creepy like he’s the the antichrist.
  19. LMAO!! So did Saddam Hussein! By some strange coincidence every brutal dictator report’s massive approval ratings you would never find any democracy..Mist be because they’re so awesome and loved and would never report obviously false numbers, right? Seriously. You’re such a loser. Well probably not any of the dozens of Putin critics who “fell out of a window” or the last guy to run against him who was poisoned with a Russian military neurotoxin and is now in a prison colony in the arctic circle Russia is a dictatorship dude of course the dictator gets re-elected” Seriously you’re getting more and more unhinged and unreasonable on here, you’ve clearly fallen down an internet rabbit hole and now you’re his self-radicalized internet kook right down there with TaxMe and R10. How far you’ve fallen since you first appeared on here not so long ago.
  20. Germany wasn’t defeated by Israel and didn’t surrender n conditionally to Israel. The very same people who heels an ideology to exterminate all Jews soon parted with it. And not because they were afraid of what Israel would do to them. Also note that Germany was as transformed by the Marshall Plan that followed the War as it was by the destruction it sustained during the war. The point is this false claim of yours that societies cant part ways with a extremist ideology or you can somehow beat them into submission just isn’t supported by history. Germans developed their extremist ideology as a result of the harsh conditions and destruction imposed upon the them after WW1, but not after WW2 in great deal due to the Marshall Plan. Ditto Japan. E allies especially the US spent a lot of money to ensure those countries rebuilt in to modern advanced economies. Afghanistan: you can’t be serious The Taliban won, the reason they stopped attacking us is because we left their country Iraq: As far as terrorism against USA goes, that also ended because the US withdrew from Iraq. The organization ISIS was NOT the same as the Iraqi people just like Hamas is not same as the Palestinian people. ISIS was defeated completely without mass subjugation and humiliation of the Iraqi people and the US withdrew from Iraq instead of continuing to occupy Ithem claiming that the citizens are incapable of anything except terrorism and don’t “deserve” a state.
  21. LOL you don’t get it I was making fun of you because clearly the Democrats party doesn’t “meet the dictionary definition” of a cult by any stretch of the imagination. Meawhile the Republican Party is the Cult of Trump complete with: - elaborate and baseless conspiracy theories and secret truths that are to be believed only because Trump says so, including trying to steal the 2020 election, - supporters actually attacked the Capitol when he lost the election - a leader who refuses to debate, be challenged or criticized in person and still sweeps the primaries l - follower’s belief in the leader’s implausible superhuman “genius” abilities (“knows more about the military than the generals”, “just as much about vaccines and microbiology as the scientists” etc. ). - Let’s not forget the “#walk” hashtag from his first presidential run. That’s what you’re supposed to use on social media to brag about cutting off friends and family who aren’t Trump supporters. - Another Key red flag is when the Republican party didn’t release a platform in the 2020 election year, instead stating only:”That the Republican party has and will continue to enthusiastically support the President’s America-first agenda.” That is some straight up David Koresh drink-the kool-aid cult level shit right there. It’s basically confirming that they believe in nothing except unquestionably supporting Dear Leader’s one-man rule in whatever he wishes to say or do or not say or do. in summary it’s hilarious that despite the fact the Republican Party being almost universally described as a one man personality cult foe the last 8 years You (and the celebrity in the OP) think democrats “meet the dictionary definition” of a cult ….all because the politicians don’t live up to their campaign promises. That’s not the definition of a cult, that’s the definition of a political party and all parties in every democracy ESPECIALLY the Republican party don’t and can’t keep all their promises
  22. No I mean the PA which was recognized by Israel in 1994. In exchange for PA recognizing Israel’s right to exist Note the Israel didn’t recognize Palestine’s right to exist, simply PA’s limited civil authority on behalf of Palestinian people PA was formed out PLO political wing but it is not “still” a terrorist organization and once again I’ll point out that Israel’s founders were terrorist groups who were allowed to came to the table and form Israel’s first government That is just a false statement. Israel has NEVER ONCE recognized the right for a Palestinian State to exist. PA however officially recognized that eofht as part of the Oslo Accords, which both sides agreed to and signed. That is done treaty. I think where you’re trying to go with this is the Israeli claim that they’ve made various offers for a Palestinian state during the Camp David summit. Forst not that this is not the same as recognizing a Palestinian RIGHT to a state which is a completely different thing. Second, aside from the fact that most if not all of these “offers” were made in bad-faith and/or were non viable like an offer for the Palestinian state to be made out of isolated villages disconnected from each other and only on a fraction of current Palestinian territory and no right of return for even the internally displaced Palestinians much less Palestinians displaced abroad despite the fact that all Jews worldwide have unlimited rights of “return” including to illegal settlements in the OT and even if they can’t prove an ancestor ever lived in Israel. Fine kill Has. Stop trying to equate Has with all Palestinians. That’s like saying you’re a Liberal because you’re Canadian and the Canadian PM is Liberal Im not “taking the side of terrorists”. Tou can kill all the terrorists for all I care. How best can I explain this? Let’s do a thought exercise: Think of a cause you strongly believe in. Now imagine some ELSE also believes strongly in the same cause but is willing to commit terrorism for it. Does that mean you’re no longer allowed to believe in your cause because you’re “taking the side of a terrorist”? What of Justin Trudeau started sending men to lill conservative families and someone resisted with terrorist, do you have to start supporting Trudeau in order to side against terrorists? Its quite obvious as long as there is Israeli occupation there will he terrorism. Terrorism doesn’t just go away like a bad dream when you kill terrorists its an infinitely renewable resource unless the underlying grievance is addressed.
  23. Sour grapes over what? Learning from that image that it was Trump who killed Inigo Montoya’s father in The Princess Bride? I don’t think you’re using that expression properly
  24. The only place where “Anne Frank” has been censored is in the Republican South and the book ban frenzy that’s all the rage now. The link in the OP is just covering some people’s hysterical reactions to a ONE INSTANCE of a totally routine clean out of old copies…hysteria caused by all the news of Republican book bans down south. That’s why the author in the OP quoted couldn’t claim Anne Frank has been “banned” and instead relies on undefined slang “memory holes”. The OP is just partisan theory lacking in substance.
  25. Trumps campaign tweeted then after ridicule deleted this obviously fake image of Trump supposedly praying in a church Do even his gullible and unquestioning supporters honestly believe this man has ever prayed in his life? Maybe to say “please god let become dictator, don’t let me go to jail” but he’d probably never bother going into an actual church to do it. Can any of them even tell that this is a fake CGI image?
