  1. Protest groups are free to express their opinion, and venue organizers are free to listen to them or not. Free speech is not one way. Do protest groups get co-opted by others who want to spread illegal acts or violence? Yes, this does happen on occasion, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the protest group.
  2. Now you are just pointing out the weakness of the main stream media - inconsistency.
  3. Do you mean the Environics survey? I also noted that it said that more Muslims had respect for other people compared to respect for Canadian culture than non-Muslims. Non-Muslims seem to cherish Canadian culture over respect for other people.
  4. Are you going to give up your little blue Viagra pill because Pfizer is part of that coalition?
  5. I think betsy is aware that Rasmussen tends to have a conservative bias in their polls. They use automated call machines, and select 'likely' voters rather than general adult population. This particular poll seems to be even more off than they have been in the past.
  6. Yes, he was able to sneak into Canada using fake documents. In fact he also passed US INS inspection, it was a US customs official that caught him.
  7. Every time there is an attack in America, the loony fringe point fingers to Canada. How many times have they been out to lunch?
  8. I don't see any problem with a dislike button, only snowflakes would be offended by it. Having additional choices is fine as well (e.g. funny, interesting, etc.) but tend not to get much use. Having a running total for the user does not add much value, so if someone is offended by that then I have no problem not displaying that. The purpose of like/dislike is to show your agreement or disagreement with a post, not a popularity contest. Having only like is similar to the the coddling that so many in here are vocally against. It would be nice if you could see who voted how, nobody needs to hide their opinion.
  9. If I ban the KKK from holding meetings on campus, am I banning all white Christians?
  10. Signing big pieces of paper is not delivering on a promise, only results matter.
  11. I thought the issues was the Mexicans required a visa, and couldn't simply show up at the border with a passport. It was not a ban on travel, but a requirement (as we have with many other countries) to seek a visa before that travel. Do you have any real empirical data to cite, and not one-of stories? Canada has been accepting refugees from all over the world for many years, many of them have done very well in this country and I expect there are some that have not. Certainly the children of refugees that get educated in this country are in a good position to succeed.
  12. The content may belong to the writer, but the publication of the content does not. If we look at a paper analogy, I write a letter to the editor of a newpaper and they publish it. It may be my words, but the copies out in circulation belong to those that bought the paper. You have claims on the content w.r.t. how it can be further used, subject to certain fair-use provisions, but the original publication is already out there. You cannot erase all those copies already printed, you might want to run around town and buy them all so you can burn them but you can't go into someones home and demand the paper back. Yes, things change in a digital world because there are far more capabilities of the technology but the basic premise does not change. If for example Greg was running a web hosting company then he would be a service provider and you could be the publisher, but that is not the case with on-line social forums. Once your words have been read by someone else, then the publisher had a responsibility to the reader as well as the writer. That reader may have taken action based on your words (e.g. wrote a reply) and somewhere a balance between responsibility to both reader and writer must be established. I think we can all agree that the edit function is a great feature to those writing content and none of us wants to see it disappear. If it is abused to the point where it infringes on the reader of the content then we have a problem. Within the capabilities of the software, lets hope that the right balance is achieved and respected by all.
  13. I'm not sure what numbers you are using. From what I can tell you might be able to get 2-3 Gripen's, but not 5-8. On the operational side it would be better, with maybe 4 flight hours in the Gripen for the cost of a single flight hour in the F18 E/F.
  14. "As of today, we are officially putting Iran on notice" So is that Trump's line in the sand?
  15. Since the live video was only seen by a couple of hundred people, I expect the answer you will get in here will be no. Additionally it was a closed Facebook group so obviously the membership is limited. Yes the authorities showed up, and arrested two Afghan migrants (one seems to have been in the country for at least 4 years) and one Swede. The two Afghans are the ones accused of rape, and the Swede is accused of failing to report it. The girl has been described as close to unconscious in the video so she might not be a very good witness. Yes, the police are looking for more evidence just like they would do in any proper investigation of rape. There have been some screenshots, and partial video provided. Just thought posting real facts would be helpful. Reagan became President in 1981, but the Shah of Iran (monarch) fell in February 1979, about 9 months before the hostage crisis began. I don't know if your 'idiot peanut brain' is a reference to Carter (he was a peanut farmer) but he became president 3 years earlier; while it is a violation of the rules of this forum to use such insults, if it is against Carter it will be let to slide but if it is against Reagan then it will probably be censored.
  16. Yes, it does break the forum rules, although as it is not against someone that is identified as right winged that faux pas will probably be exempt or ignored. I think however using the term 'liar' defeats your point. As I suggested earlier duplicity is much better. Perhaps you might want to use deceived, or coward. I think they all are valid observations. A lie however is not a factual assessment, because this was a broken promise which is bad and he should be held to account for. I am not trying to paint it as any less important to an actual lie, just different. Sorry, but Harper's record is far worse. You have every right to complain about Trudeau as having failed here, but to pretend that Harper is better is completely wrong.
  17. I can get over the air CBS, NBC, and PBS. I will have to try and see if I can get Fox, although that is not an option for most Canadians depending on where they live. Things have certainly changed from the days where cable meant community access television and was essentially about sharing a common antenna placed on a mountain, etc. Now the business model is substantially different. I think timing is a big issue here, when did Bell negotiate the contract for the Superbowl and is the CRTC decision changing that. I have no love for Bell, but if they negotiated a contact based on the premise of simultaneous substitution then that should be honored. If they were aware however at the time of negotiating the contract that this change was coming, or at least possible, then too bad you rolled the dice and lost.
  18. You are right, we didn't see the blame the victim happening in 2014 like it is happening today; much of this thread is testimony to that fact.
  19. Thanks for that, it has been many months since I visited the Rebel. Nice to see that I am not missing anything but nutball conspiracy theories. Back to the topic at hand. FoxNews is a major news source (unlike Levant) and a Canadian citizen was being wrongly accused by them, I see nothing wrong with the Prime Minsters office intervening by providing real facts (as opposed to Trump alternative lies). There might be an argument to be made that they didn't need to make it public, but I don't see that as a big issue. The big problem is that the correct information was known for quite some time, yet Fox did nothing to correct it by themselves. A major news media has a duty to correct errors, and especially when they involve individuals in these highly charged situations they need to act swiftly.
  20. You are digging in the trenches and throwing out any crap you can find. The schools in Ontario are banning a group (Hasbara Fellowships Canada) from participating in an event, that is not banning Jewish students, not even close in any far fetch imagination.
  21. I see this incident as almost exactly the same as the one in Ottawa just over 2 years ago where Corporal Nathan Cirillo was shot, the only difference is the number of victims. In both cases members of an identifiable group were sought out and attacked. The individual doing the shooting had previously attempted to associate with groups but didn't seem to fit into the mainstream. It is also a good contrast in how to deal with radical individuals. Just like people were asking 2 years ago what could have the mosques, family, homeless shelter, etc. do to identify and prevent the act we should be asking the same of the conservative groups and fellow students, etc. today.
  22. Sorry but a 'school' with 6 instructors and 1 administrator hardly qualifies as a representative sample of Canada. The President of the United States however is supposed to represent all of America. b.t.w. At least the school was grown up enough to review and reverse its bad decision, the same cannot be said of Trump.
  23. It is sad when the actions of one member invoke changes like this. I think the 24 hour compromise is reasonable however. There are many valid reasons for changing a post, and as I stated earlier if someone comments on something I posted earlier I sometimes do go back and change it but strike out the old version so it remains visible to keep their response in context. Most common changes are simple typo's, or to better clarify what I wanted to originally say. It even happens on rare occasions that while in a rush I say something that is completely opposite to what I intended by forgetting or including a negation. On-line forums are not the same thing as published content, we are typing quickly and not fully proofreading our content; that is the nature of the beast.
  24. Trump does connect with many Americans, but he fails to connect with the majority and he offers nothing of substance. It is not by chance that he polls well among old uneducated straight white men.
  25. Time for the NDP or Greens, as the Liberals and Conservatives have proven they have no intention of changing the system. I prefer the term duplicity that overthere uses. Cullen chose to use the term 'liar', and that kind of rhetoric turned me off his otherwise very good critique of this action. It is hard not to feel a little sorry for Ms. Gould having this dumped into her lap, when it seems fairly clear that she was handed a new portfolio with this decision already part of it. I didn't catch question period, was JT there to be grilled?
