  1. Just google Out of Africa theory, there is a lot there. You might want to read this report in Science Daily from the University of Cambridge. Yes of course there are "alternative facts" from the fringe element with their debunking nonsense, in today's world we can't escape "alternative facts" they have risen to the highest office in the world.
  2. In the US there are 21 states with smaller populations than Puerto Rico, in fact 2 states have smaller populations than the District of Columbia. I think there is a lot about so-called democracy the is not equitable.
  3. I guess I misinterpreted "How's that equitable?" to mean you thought it was not equitable. Do you not see any value in having some level of checks and balances in our legislative process? Especially in a country with the power resting almost 100% in the hands of a single individual (party leader dictating what party does, and with majority government that means absolute power).
  4. I would put this in the same category as parents who allow their kids to veg out in front of the TV, or dine at McDonalds. Yes, they are all health issues. Vitamin D can be provided through supplements, I think inactivity and excessive sugary foods is a far more serious issue. Once we start throwing parents in jail for the latter two, we can talk about this one.
  5. Why do they have to make payoffs to 'fringe' parties as you call them? They can make their deals with the other 'moderates' as you call them. The fact is that the major parties run roughshod over the majority of the population because they have a system that virtually guarantees they have their kick at the can for 4 years. Most people don't vote for the party because they support them entirely, they vote because they are forced into making a single decision that they have to live with for 4 years and the alternative is worse. Some of our most productive Parliaments have been minority ones because they are forced to make compromises and not push their own agenda.
  6. Doesn't this belong in the BLM thread. We all emerged Out of Africa, somewhere near the Congo.
  7. Isn't that the lady that doesn't believe in public education? Trump wins again, and the people lose.
  8. Since you claim there is a large overlap between the two major tyrannical parties, they obviously hold the people hostage for their own payoff far more frequently. You paint minority as monsters, when in fact they are often the victim of the far bigger monsters.
  9. So tyranny of the 40% is what is good for the country as a whole? Those who don't conform will be assimilated?
  10. Since Mary was was a jew, would that be a Tichel? Jewish tradition: Married women wear a head covering (Ketubah - basically prenuptial agreement) Christian tradition: Women wear a head covering while praying (1 Corinthians 11:2-9) Muslim tradition: All women after puberty wear a head covering in public (Surah 33:59)
  11. FPTP is so bad because is forces people to park their vote in parties that are likely to get 100% of the power that those parties think their are entitled to and actually do exercise. FPTP is trying to find the least horrid alternative, not the best. FPTP is the tool of the dictator pretending to actually give any power to the voter. PR is about finding workable solutions for the entire population, and not running roughshod over the majority. The cleaning house strategy you brought up earlier is necessary in FPTP because it is so bad in day to day operation. Unfortunately the problem with cleaning house is as a nation we never make any progress, we just have opposing ideals with 100% of the power tearing down what the previous government did just out of spite.
  12. Most seismic vessels are operated by oil companies doing exploration for potential drilling sites. While the industry has been responsible for artificial quakes, that is generally from practices like fracking and not seismic exploration. I am not aware if any fracking going on in that area of the world, but the common outcome is more smaller quakes and not large ones. Turkey does experience a lot of earthquakes due to geography. It sits between two huge tectonic plates, Eurasia and Africa/Arabia, and there is significant movement of them relative to each other in the order of about 2cm/year. The pressure builds up until eventually there is a fracture in the rock and an earthquake is the result. The best way to minimize the loss of life would be to tighten up the building codes, but that will not be an overnight fix.
  13. You are forgetting the 8.1 million people, representing 59% of the voters, that got 0% say for the next for years - they, the significant majority got screwed. This country is run by parties, and party leaders.
  14. Let's see, both the Reform party and Progressive Conservative party had more support than the Bloc Québécois in 1993, yet it was the Bloc that became the official opposition. FPTP is completely screwed up in both selecting government as well as opposition. PR doesn't screw anyone, FPTP does including supporting fringe parties.
  15. It is very clear the FPTP & Ranked ballots favour major parties, it is almost impossible for a smaller party to get representation in the house with them where a major party can get 100% of the power using them. How can you possibly dispute that fact? Yes, local representation and housecleaning are different topics but they have absolutely nothing to screwing the voters as Queenmandy85 suggested. I know that local representation means exactly nothing for the Conservative party because when I had a Conservative MP and asked about something that wasn`t in their handed down from high party platform they completely ignored it. The Ontario Progressive Conservatives were slightly (only very slightly) more responsive.
  16. No, proportional representation will support the voters. FPTP and preferential ballots are ways to screw the voters, they end up giving all the power to a minority of support.
  17. Can we at least define 'arms' as muzzle loaded muskets with a single shot as the traditionalists should.
  18. That is not exactly true. Yes, DND has studied the issue and gave an opinion on what would be required to extend the life. Here is what they say on the ELE (Estimated Life Expectancy): An ELE of 2020-2025 represents a target beyond which significant structural investments will be required to maintain the fleet’s airworthiness. As such, it represents an ELE extension for modest cost while still resulting in reasonably low to moderate technical and operational risk respectively. Once the US Navy drawdown begins in earnest, and prior to final fleet retirement, sustainment will become more difficult and costly with less access to either Repair and Overhaul (R&O) facilities or the availability of spare parts for purchase.7 An ELE of 2025-2030 represents a technically feasible albeit risky stretch target. It would require the entire fleet to undergo the Control Point 3 (CP3) Life Extension Program (LEP) along with other significant structural refurbishment investments. This option is a high risk solution, from both a technical and operational perspective. Also, reduced R&O and spares sources increase sustainment challenges. From a cost perspective, there is increased uncertainty in projecting non-recurring engineering (NRE) as well as sustainment costs out that far since even small changes to current assumptions could cause significant impacts to cost projections. From an operational perspective, the fleet will be exposed to a more lethal threat environment. In addition, there will be decreased interoperability with newer aircraft flown by Canada’s allies. Remember that the CF-18's already underwent a major overhaul (2006) to extend their use to 2020, and it involved changes to how the CF-18 was flown, and reductions in the planned yearly flying rate (YFR). They are crippling along as it is.
  19. Sure thing, even though one of his first actions was to kill Dodd-Frank and restore Wall Street to the position where it caused the 2008 global recession.
  20. That was with the odd addresses, Donald is only aligned with the even ones.
  21. The ship is leaky

    • Phone call to Mexican President
    • Phone call to Australian Prime Minister
    • Details about stage managing his supreme court pick
    • Drafts of executive orders including the one where Trump wants to promote/protect those who discriminate against gays

I would say the new President's hand picked team is not all on board.

  22. Supreme court - yes he made an appointment, just like the Republicans refused to confirm any Obama appointment for the past year and shirked their responsibility Temporary ban is a joke, and currently lifted by the courts Extreme vetting is just rhetoric What wall, show me the wall Drain the swamp and fill it with Goldman Sachs alligators Rebuilding the military, exactly what has he done? Destroying planned parenthood and increasing the number of abortions due to more pregnancies from lack of access to contraceptives - big fail
  23. That is a doctors prescription for the vitamin D deficiency the suffer from
  24. I'm not sure what you want. Quebec is represented in the Senate in proportion to it's population, and Ontario is underrepresented. They do not dominate the Senate. The biggest problem with the Senate however is the appointment comes from the Prime Minister, so it has just been a puppet of the Prime Minsters. Justin Trudeau did try to address that, but he didn't really go far enough. I have always maintained that the Senate appointment committee (he did that part right) should have representatives from both the federal and provincial level and in proportion to the popular vote (ie. not just a puppet of PM and Premiers).
