  1. Fine but CP can't afford it's pension plan right now. If they reduce services, which they need to do, they probably won't be able to meet the obligations of their pension. Should the taxpayer be on the hook for those pensions?
  2. So you really think Canada Post needs to be funded at the same level it does now, no matter what? Do you really think 5-day a week service is good use of taxpayer money when less people are using the service?
  3. The Pension only really works if you work for the same employer for decades. That doesn't seem to be happening anymore. Pension are nice but the reality simply is, they aren't being offered anymore. Only civil servants and auto workers get them now. People should be saving for their retirement. I'll be interesting to see what happens when a generation of people that didn't save and don't have pensions reach retirement age. And by interesting, I sorta mean worrisome as I'm part of that generation. Besides the point of the thread. Canada Post can't afford it's workforce and pension anymore, what should be done? Should the government just maintain it's workforce so it can fund its pension?
  4. At this point any pension is considered lavish. The point remains, the pension is one of the big reasons they're bleeding money. When do Posties get to retire?
  5. I'm sure not everyone does have access to a computer. But you still have access to a computer with the internet at public libraries etc. I'm hearing people starting to say that internet is a universal human right. Still doesn't justify daily mail delivery.
  6. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/cash-strapped-canada-post-asks-government-for-a-cheque-in-the-mail/article13989680/ First of all there's NO WAY! you need daily delivery. Even if you're one of those people that don't want your bills e-mailed to you, it's not like you need daily delivery to receive bills. I still get mail from family, I still like the coupons I get from certain companies. Sending out actual invitations for weddings are still a thing. . . I guess. But I almost never mail things. I still have stamps purchased for when I got married. The problem with Canada Post is, like with all public sector businesses, it's beholden to a powerful union with lavish pensions that making trimming costs very difficult. If it cuts delivery days then there's no reason they need the staff, but then there's no way they could fund their pensions. It's a similar problem with all public servants. They want to cut staff then the Union talks about getting rid of "Good Canadian Jobs". Same crap the LCBO Union trotted out when it tried to make people think stock clerks need to get paid $20/hour. BTW raising postal rates won't exactly make people more likely to mail things.
  7. I know this must have been addressed at some point in this mammoth thread. Isn't the fact that none of the 20+ officers on the scene don't appear to feel threatened enough to have their guns drawn or to fire on Yatim speak to the negligence of Forcillo? This should definitely be something examined in the trial. I doubt, due to the thin blue line, any of the officers will find fault in what Forcillo did though.
  8. If he fired and he didn't intend to kill the kid, then he improperly discharged his weapon.
  9. If he didn't want to kill Yatim, then he shouldn't have fired upon him. The actions indicate the intent.
  10. Well legally there isn't. But there have been honour killings in Canada.
  11. So does that mean a province, let's say Alberta, can pass a law making Same-sex marriage illegal? Opps no they can't! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_Thirty-three_of_the_Canadian_Charter_of_Rights_and_Freedoms So if the SCOC declared freedom of religion the "exclusive domaine of Canadian Parliament" Quebec would be SOL? It's interesting reading the Wiki page that the clause was a silly compromise that Trudeau never approved of. All the more evidence that creating the charter was a complete waste of time.
  12. All mentions of Hell in the Bible are just earthly personifications of it. Ultimately it's eternal separation from God. I would find it very difficult to believe, in so far as believing in God and an afterlife, that God would create souls just to cast them into a lake of fire for eternity if they didn't meet a certain unclear standard. If someone is worthy of Hell, perhaps an awareness of their falling and then an ultimate deletion of their soul would be a more appropriate punishment. It's ultimately was they've decided on by not believing anyway.
  13. Sorkin has created a terrific antagonist in a non-crime related show in Jerry Dantana. It's a real downer I have to wait until after Labour Day to see this clown get what's coming his way.
  14. Just being fair, as I posted this story in this thread weeks ago. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/toronto/durham-regional-police-officer-to-face-discipline-over-inappropriate-tweets/article13954467/ Less a problem with Marin than the person using the officer's account. Ironically we all know the name of the guy being framed but not the actual officer who created the troll account and maligned Scott.
  15. So the Federal Government can't stop provinces from passing unconstitutional laws? There would be a slippery slope there.
  16. With the evidence we do have, Yatim wasn't moving towards the police. If it can be proven at the time of the shooting he wasn't advancing doesn't that itself prove the shooting wasn't required?
  17. Seems that this plan is proving popular in Quebec http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2013/08/26/proposed_quebec_ban_on_religious_symbols_takes_step_forward.html So it would appear that the PQ are appealing to their base here and it might work. Still the Feds should not allow the PQ to do something like this.
  18. All four big Toronto papers are doing it now. Sign of the times. The New York Times appears to have had success putting up a Paywall. BTW on topic. Toronto Police seem to be willing to make Tazers available to all officers not just supervisors.
  19. This is a significant thread drift as the law would also effect Sikhs and Jews and to a lesser extent some Christians. We see in Europe that fundamentalist Islam has caused many problem in many places. But if we're going to allow immigration we can't ban religious garb and if Quebec uses the Not Withstanding Clause to enforce this unconstitutional law, there should be consequence from the Feds.
  20. Here's a good story in today's Toronto Sun about why treating an exotic animal as a pet is cruel. http://www.torontosun.com/2013/08/25/sanctuary-provides-home-for-unwanted-exotic-pets
  21. It's like they were trying to make a real-world version of Homeland. It's always like this with movies. The courier is the key to finding UBL but only this one woman believes in finding the courier. It's her vs everyone else in the CIA. Maya is just a representation of real-life women who worked for the CIA. I had seen a documentary about how they caught UBL a few months before watching this movie. I could see the similarities. I did think the movie was a tad too long.
  22. Saying that religion dies with the first generation of Canadians isn't exactly accurate in regards to fundamentalist Islam. We actually see that the trouble makers are citizens and we're born in a Western country. Remember the guy that was publicly executed in the UK, the guy who did it was British. Same with the people who bombed the subway in 2005. What about the Toronto 18? Omar Khadr? Homegrown terrorism is as much of a threat as foreign terrorism. Assuming first generation Canadians will reject fundamentalist Islam is a fallacy. It may happen with some, but not all.
  23. Yeah if you were inclined to vote PC and won't because of Hudak, then you're lying. You're happy being led by a completely corrupt party that has no respect for taxpayer money. None!
  24. Ford wins! Musta been the crack. It's nice that most of Toronto's media has nothing better to do today.
  25. Which is why I contend this is veiled racism by the PQ.
