It's the irony of this whole situation. Trump got elected saying the whole world is laughing at the US. They really weren't, but with him as POTUS, they certainly are now. You have a US government that discounts their own scientific agencies as peddling partisan hoaxes.

We have to live with deaths from this disease. Just like we live with the Flu. If the new normal is shutting down the economy every time infection rates reach a certain point, then what type of future are we looking at. The only excuse for shutting down the economy like has happened is if Healthcare systems can't cope.

Federal leaders aren't dictating how these re-openings should happen. They're assisting with financial support and information. Ontario will keep the schools closed until September, Quebec has partially re-opened them. The US is handling it similarly as well. In fact in some states the municipality can be the leading driver. Like in Wisconsin where the shutdown was struck down by the Courts, so cities jumped in with their own orders.

You typecast people as Dems/Libs so how does it fit your worldview that Conservative leaders are also participating in these shutdowns and gradual, responsible re-openings?

Huh? I'm not sure what your take is here. Who do you think is unhappy by opening? The Premiere of ONTARIO is a Conservative and is acting responsibly in re-opening. Schools won't re-open until September.

States like Texas and Georgia are good indicators of how this re-opening will work in the US. Both states are on the exponential upswing. Texas is below the national average on testing.

Japan is an island and their reported testing per million is pathetically low. Like embarrassingly low. Many third world countries have higher testing than Japan.

How do you "pay attention" to elderly and vulnerable groups? Lock them in their homes? What of people who live with the elderly? What of people over 65 that still work? The idea of the shutdown was the preserve healthcare capability. New York, Italy, Spain, France and even the UK all showed that action before the system gets overwhelmed could save lives. People were dying, not because they got COVID-19, but because the system was too overwhelmed to help them. And lives have been saved. It's convenient to say that because Social Distancing worked that it wasn't necessary. BTW private companies shut down well before public ones did. Governments actually followed the lead on a lot of this.

Why do you Trump fans keep citing Travel bans as if they did anything. Unless unilateral, Travel bans are essentially useless.

I suspect what was seen in New York would have repeated had Social Distancing not happened. It can't be proven, but Europe is a good example of how it would have happened. And just because you died from a complication related to Corona, doesn't mean you didn't die of Corona. No one dies of AIDS, they die of complications associated with AIDS.
