Rebuilding the Liberal Brand
Newfoundlander replied to cybercoma's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Ok, I've heard this stuff about the NDP being able to balance a budget but it's one thing to balance a budget and another to grow the economy. -
And the new leader of the NDP is.... Thomas Mulcair

Is Audrey McLaughlin aloud to show her face at NDP events, I never hear tell of her? -

It did in the 90's but then they abandoned that philosophy. -

Just watching re-runs of the presentations for the first time now on CPAC. I saw a lot of criticism of Tom Mulcair's presentstion and speech, as Ed Broadbent said he "bombed". However I just finished watching Peggy Nash's presentation and thought it was much worse and I felt really sorry for her. Her campaign obviously dropped the bomb when it came to organizing it, those who introduced her were poorly rehearsed and she just seemed totally out of it and confused when she ran out of time. -
Walkom: "These high-income docs want the rich to pay"

So what happens if we have people unable to spend as much in restaurants or retail stores or buy cheaper cars and less expensive homes? -

Craig Scott wins the bi election!
Newfoundlander replied to WWWTT's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
City cores seem to attract similar demographics and personalities. Dennis Mills I guess was a popular figure. As well he only narrowly won election in 1988, which despite their loss was a good comeback election for the Liberals, and the Liberal Party owned Ontario in the 1990's for various reasons. The Liberals have not had strong polling numbers in years, if they were polling in the 30's and the NDP were in the teens the riding probably could have went Liberal under Jack Layton or Craig Scott. -

So we should regulate what people are allowed to advertise? Plus if the Conservative Party couldn't run ads I'd say we'd see a lot more ads from the NCC, the Manning Institute and other conservative think tanks. Same goes for the left wing think tanks. -
It's believeed by some that not much more then 50% will vote.
-
Angus Reod has them 8 points behind the Conservatives, which is consistent with all recent polls.
-
All Dippers should remember if you don't vote Mulcair it will be an "overwhelming insult" to Quebec!

A lot of people didn't think it looked good on the Conservatives when they "attacked" Michael Ignatieff, but it worked. -

Do you agree or disagree with the Liberals having Bob Rae billboards or the NDP having ads on the gun registry? -

Turmel was a ticking time bomb so there was no need to attack her. -

You might stand behind the leader 100% but it doesn't sound like Ed Broadbent will. You might think Broadbent was just being "scrappy" but he criticized Mulcair for wanting to bring the party to the centre, criticized his personality, casting him as someone who could not work with others which was the reason why not many senior members of the party were supporting him. The Liberals are going through a leadership process, the official campaign might not have started but the party is looking for a leader. Are you saying you would have agreed to the NDP spending millions of dollars defending Nycole Turmel if attack ads had been released on her, even though you knew she would only be leader for a few months? -

Your party just had a former leader come out and attack the frontrunner in the leadership campaign. You're a completely blind partisan if you consider it fighting for Holland to say the Liberals should not spend money on defending Rae's term as the NDP premier of Ontario but it's not fighting when Broadbent blasts Mulcair for not being a real New Democrat. -

How are they fighting? They disagree over protecting the interim leader but I don't see how that's fighting. I guess we could also say the NDP will fall apart and not be the official opposition for long because they are fighting, couldn't we? -

Interesting to note that possible leadership candidate Mark Holland sees no reason why the party should spend money defending the INTERIM leader of the party against these attack ads. http://www.torontosun.com/2012/03/21/liberals-ponder-whether-rae-worth-defending -

There's no limit on how much can be spent between elections, to my knowledge, and I've heard no party advocate for there to be a limit. -

Those things are always a factor, it doesn't change the fact that our unemployment rate stayed on the lower side during the recession compared to other places in the world and compared to the 1990's. -

The Liberals, NDP and Bloc should have tried to get a limit put on political advertising between elections when they had a majority in the House of Commons. -

Well WWWTT is saying that the Conservatives are just buying democracy. Maybe I took what WWWTT said a bit out of context by saying the Conservatives are doing nothing wrong.
