  1. The land is still changing hands. A two state solution is being paved over as we correspond. The basic point I am making is that land is at the heart of this matter. Anti-Semitism or bigotry of any type are secondary. Even Bill Maher and Sam Harris have chosen to ignore this truism. People fighting over land hate each other and always find good reasons to hate each other in Bihar, Fermanagh or Hebron. The only time I have been threatened with violence in a forum was during a discussion of a property lawsuit where I made some mild comments about the rights of way of hikers through farms.
  2. BTW I am aware of the absurdity of a North American resident like myself lecturing anybody else on this topic. At least the Jewish People do have an ancient claim to the land of Israel which is more than can be said for my lot here. The Beothuk of Newfoundland conveniently disappeared in various ways as the Europeans encroached on the island. Were I a surviving member of that tribe, I would feel perfectly entitled to regard the foreigners with some lack of affection.
  3. So if you get a generation in, you keep the loot? Does that apply to all stolen goods? Anyway, no matter what one wants to call this process or whether God has privately gifted the real estate to one side or another, it's happening right now in the West Bank - no need to bother the grandparents. The possibility of a two state solution is disappearing in front of our eyes as Bibi protests his innocence. At least Naftali Bennett is honest enough to declare his intentions. There is a larger issue of Islam's failure to modernise but that is peripheral to the land feud in Palestine. Needless to say, both sides are bigoted. In fact, ALL humans are racist and sectarian. We all prefer our own. Some hide this better than others but that's how it is. Many of my SA Indian relatives prefer the Afrikaner approach to race relations because you know where you stand with those people. The Anglophones were full of pious lies like their kin in Canada.
  4. What will he do to help all the opioid users who voted for him? In West Virginia, for example, where he did very well: http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/2016/12/19/How-West-Virginia-Became-Ground-Zero-Opioid-Epidemic I didn't hear a lot of specifics about that in the speech.
  5. So if I steal a racist's car, I am not a thief? The absurdity of this thread is transparent to anyone from a country that has been colonized. It's one of many jaded arguments colonizers use to justify their theft.
  6. I think they are predicting decades of deficits, not decades of Liberal government.
  7. How much time does O'Leary spend in Canada these days? Is he vulnerable on that front?
  8. The thing is how will brash celebs be seen after a few years of Trump? O'Leary might not seem so endearing then.
  9. Apart from jobs, restaurants and concerts (big considerations I'll admit), Toronto's allure mystifies me. It is an ugly place.
  10. The way things are going, some sort of universal income will be necessary.
  11. Notwithstanding equalization and taxes etc., Alberta should still have saved more of its oil windfall.
  12. If O'Leary gets in, it may just be between him and the not-O'Leary of the establishment, maybe Raitt or Scheer. Leitch's abrasiveness will look tame by comparison with the real thing.
  13. Not as much as one might expect. The people I saw in the Sixties and Seventies suffered serious mistreatment but they and their kids got on with their lives. It's a few of the grandkids who are causing the trouble. Radicalization is a result of many forces. What we do is one of them but it matters less than other factors.

  15. Even if effective, this would be a short-term solution. I presume kids wouldn't be subjected to this test. Kids grow up. The Pakistani community in Britain used to suffer serious discrimination yet had very few extremists in its ranks. Now a small number of the descendants of those immigrants have very different views.
  16. That's true in some cases. It's also true that the best foreigners are as good as any one in Canada and they are not that hard to spot. However, the hurdles that foreign grads must get through to work in Canada are now deterring some of the best candidates from even applying here. It's simply not worth the trouble.
  17. Perhaps. What country has successfully used this model?
  18. Here's the CBC's Dr. Brian Goldman's mea culpa: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/i-was-part-of-big-pharmas-big-influence/article535295/ And two recent appraisals of the crisis: http://www.cbc.ca/radio/whitecoat/blog/no-quick-fix-to-prescription-drug-abuse-1.3131971 http://www.cbc.ca/radio/whitecoat/into-the-breech-this-midwife-says-breech-births-are-safe-and-natural-now-she-just-has-to-convince-doctors-1.3837164/action-needed-for-opioid-epidemic-1.3839994
  19. I am not up in arms about that, actually. This particular 'lefty' (not very left, mind you, by any reasonable standard) is merely pointing out the failure to detect nonsense in standard interviews of Canadians within Canada, interviews that Leitch would certainly have conducted herself. If you really want to hear PC gibberish, attend some of these.
  20. I hope Kelly Leitch would do a better job of this test than she and her ilk currently manage interviewing candidates for medical residency programs. The Canadians are full of pious and tedious lies about saving humanity which somehow manages to impress Canadian interviewers who probably told the same shameless porkies in their time; it is refreshing to hear bald statements of self interest from the foreigners, the truth at last.
  21. It is up to the doctors to do no harm. They have made a terrible mess of treating pain and many of them are willing to admit it now.
  22. Neither could care less about Canada. That's always been the case with Putin. He must have wondered who that fat fellow was who nearly bumped into him at the G20. Freeland is a good choice. I'd say we have rarely had a MFF who is as well informed about Russia. How many have even been able to speak Russian?
  23. So how are you all preparing for global warming? There will be catastrophic floods and storms in coastal regions. I'm not near the coast and I'm a nice bit above sea level here so I guess I have that little part taken care of.
  24. Leitch does not look or sound the part. She's just not leadership material.
