I am now about to remake our immigration system. Here are a few of my likely policy changes. Immigration numbers will be cut back to 200,000 Family immigration will be eliminated except in humanitarian cases. Investor class immgiration will be eliminated entirely. All potential immmigrants must pass basic language tests given at the embassy or consulate. All potential immigrants must have a job offer for a job which cannot be easily filled by Canadians in order to immigrate to Canada (which is the requirement in the US) The requirement that immigrants attest to their desire to reside in Canada will be reinstated. The period of residency before acquiring citizenship will be raised back to 5 years. All potential immigrants will be interviewed, which will allow an immigration officer to assess their language skills as well as their personal suitability and willingness to adapt and assimilate into Canada. They will also be required to answer, in writing, a series of fairly routine questions related to the profession they claim to be a member of in order to weed out those with fake documents and degrees. They will also be given a version of the 'personality' tests Canadian business routinely use to assess people's values and beliefs to see if they will fit in. In addition for a potential immigrant getting points for language ability, education, job skills, etc., the potential immigrant's spouse will also be able to add points to his score if he/she also has language skills, education and job skills. Canada will prioritize immigration from countries and areas in order to prevent the build-up of ethnic ghettos in Canada. For years Canada has taken a large number of immigrants from certain countries and areas which has supplied a continuing stream of that group to help enlarge and sustain such ethnic communities. Changing the focus of our immigration will allow those ethnic groups to more readily assimilate. This would mean targeting places like South America and Europe which have supplied minimal numbers of immigrants over the past few decades and which, consequently, do not have large ethnic communities here which retain the values and beliefs of their homeland. Every refugee applicant will be kept in custody pending their hearing. Every refugee applicant's story will be checked out by the embassy/consulate in the country where they reside (Which means if you claim to be persecuted because you're gay your family and friends better know about your being gay). Canada will only grant temporary asylum for a perdiod of five years. After which the condition of their country or situation will be reassessed to see if they can return home. Canada will adhere to the UN definition of refugee. This definition does not consider people living in a war torn counry like syrian (except minorities being persecuted) as refugees. Nor does it consider poverty, ie, Hait, to be a justification for asylum claims. Nor would it allow women who claim their husbands beat them to make asylum claims. Immigrants/refugees who have met the residency requirements and wish to apply for citizenship must pass language tests (more than basic) and must demonstrate the efforts they have made to assimilate, as well as having been self-supporting and having no criminal record. (this is the case in most western countries). Citizenship will be automatic only to those born to Canadian citizens. It will not be granted to those who happen to be flying overhead at birth, or to people who come here to give birth, or to visitors or refugees or students (except in the case where the resulting offspring would otherwise be stateless). If refugees become Canadian citizens then any child born to them in Canada automatically becomes a citizen.3 points

Next Sunday it is very interesting to see if there is a lot of uproar by the the so-called good people at the inevitable success of the Swedish Democrats in the elections in Sweden. Namely, it is a cliffhanger. They may even become the largest party but no chance of being in the government as all the rest gang up on them. Sweden would be without a doubt the best place to live on this planet given their history and their wealth hadn't they ruined it all through a totally insane immigration policy which has almost destroyed the nation. This election is the last chance for Sweden to get back on its feet. The sverigedemokraterna, namely Swedish Democrats, are doing well in the polls. But they are also the most hated party in Sweden because of their alleged anti-immigration agenda. Most hated? Yes. But still possibly the most liked too. It will be interesting to see what happens on Sunday.1 point

The CBC should stay out of politics. The CBC is very anti-conservative. They should abolish the CBC news department.1 point

WOW, are any of those items on the liberal platform, did any of them get any attention by the liberal government ….the only thing that seems to be important to Most Canadians is making pot legal.....and that's the only thing the liberals put any effort into.....1 point

Wilber I get it your passionate about dairy , judging by your posts, protecting our SM cost consumers 1.6 bil each year, it does not allow our dairy industry to grow, milk will flow both ways across the border...it will also allow those dairy farms not covered under SM to find a place to sell their product as well, it will become cheaper for dairy farmers as they won't have to pay for quotas..... And lets be honest our economy has always been about cheap stuff, the cheaper the better, if it was not why is most of our manufacturing gone to Asia or other 3 rd world countries, where slave labor and grossly under paid workers produce all of our luxuries....want to survive in the business you have to be competitive....why should dairy be any different it might not be as cheap, but they will have to be competitive as well , and with no sm to set prices they will fall. because the Canadian consumer is not going to be paying for inflated US prices.... The government ...1 point
-
There looking to Canada to find a larger market for their dairy, and because Canadian consumers pay out of their pocket for higher priced dairy products, look at the numbers a large portion of diary farmers are not even part of SM, locked out due high prices for the quota itself paid to each province as a tax of sort....much like the fishing industry want a larger quota pay more money....so the small guy is screwed right out of the gate....hardly fair Yes US dairy farmers are losing their farms, seen a news bit yesterday about NY state farms being a dying breed....Milk should be treated like any other product, where free enterprise rules, the company that can sell products to the consumer the cheapest rules.... Why is it always the consumer that has to keep private companies or farms afloat, I thought we had a free market, where supply and demand dictate price, and not set it artificially by some board...why do we not do this for all our products....1 point

A KKK cloak represents a person with a given set of beliefs - which is also what a niqab represents. We know full well that the wearer of either of these is going to dislike Jews because the known beliefs of both fundamentalist Muslims and the KKK are anti-Semitic. Similarly, we know that the doctrine and beliefs of both groups is extremely hostile to homosexuals. The belief it is otherwise generally rests on the very conceited western notion that Muslims are just like secular western Christians, and don't really take their doctrine seriously. Yet the fact a woman is willing to wear this... shroud everywhere she goes her whole life tells you how completely devoted she is to her religion and its doctrine. And that includes severe and violently anti-Semitic and homophobic beliefs.1 point

Good. I have no use for Trudeau's Charter anyway. All it has done is made massive amounts of money for lawyers and slowed down every single thing we do in this country. It's also enabled legions of lawyers to push their own agendas and then find some fig-leaf of justification with the Charter. Our law schools are all heavily politicized and indoctrinate students with the view that their job, as lawyers, is to push for a progressive agenda. Hell, the Ontario bar association is now requiring all lawyers to put down, in writing, how devoted and dedicated they are to progressive ideals! Political excess can be remedied by voting the bums out of office. What do we do about judicial excess? Cities, all municipalities, are the creations of the provinces. They have no constitutional protections. The provinces can create or change them, can change their borders, merge them, get rid of them, and change how they operate however they damn well want under the BNA act. This judge coming up with the novel excuse that reducing the Toronto council goes against the "freedom of expression" of the candidates is ludicrous. Personally, I don't give a damn how many council seats there is in Toronto - or for that matter, where I live. I do care about judicial political activism, though, and am happy someone outside Quebec finally had the balls to push back. Now cue all the squealing progressive talking about the end of democracy...1 point

I agree with the gist of your immigration proposals with a few exceptions and/or modifications. In particular, I don't agree with keeping refugee claimants in custody and I'm not sure this would even be legal. I think it prudent to adhere to the UN definition and to process claims much more quickly than is reportedly the case at present. I believe it might be okay to grant temporary asylum pending review of both the conditions in a claimant's home country as well as the ability of claimants to integrate and adapt. I think the system should be set up on an incentive basis, though, whereby accepted claimants who have demonstrated English or French language proficiency and adapted economically should be entitled to apply for permanent status after the temporary status period has been exhausted whether or not conditions have improved in their home countries. We have to be fair in all of this.1 point

Agreed....CBS' "respected" reporter and news anchor Dan Rather had to resign in disgrace because of "fake news" backed up by fake documents about George W. Bush during the 2004 election. Rather felt that his mission to bring down a president was so important, his end justified the means. Unfortunately for him (and CBS), the forged documents used Microsoft Word fonts/spacing that did not exist when they would have been typed by an IBM Selectric typewriter...so "fake news". With the internet and social media, the old guard "journalists" can no longer control the narrative, and with severe pressure for more content, several more have been caught flat out lying (e.g. Brian Williams in Iraq). Print media like the NYT has been busted on several occasions as that industry comes under severe pressure and lost of advertisers. Donald Trump was able to seize upon the decline of hard news media credibility and the rise of entertainment / celebrity reporting.1 point

There are two traditional blocs in Swedish politics; the red-green bloc consisting of the social democrats, the left-party and the greens and the other bloc is the centre-right bloc consisting of the conservatives, the liberals, the centre party and the christian democrats. Before the SD emerged to the scene one of the two blocs always got a majority of the votes. Not any more. Last night's result means that the bloc-politics must end in order to have a functioning government as neither bloc wants to rely on the support of the SD. It is noteworthy that as the traditional party of power the social democrats had their worst result in 100 years but yet the result was considered a relief for them as SD was expected to get more than 17.5%.1 point

I don’t care about anyone’s track record of previous “successes”, when they lose their credibility it’s just gone like anyone else’s would be. Why would I care about what Lisa LaFlamme did 8 years ago? I know now that she’s a fraudster. If she won awards 8 years ago that doesn’t carry any water. The tough thing about journalism is that when your integrity is gone it gets backdated to the beginning of time. It’s not like being a hockey player or something, where your previous accomplishments still count even when you can’t compete anymore. Or it is like an athlete of the Ben Johnson variety. Right now Hannity is on point. If the day comes that Hannity is a cheap huckster of anonymous trash then his integrity will be shot and his show will cease to have meaning. Woodward can keep his accomplishments, Hannity will have this FBIgate feather in his cap, but neither will trusted to opine about the issues of the day.1 point

There are two more examples right above that. That’s 3 if I’m not mistaken lol. Re: my inclusion of the other two topics as “lies”....the fine line between “spinning” and “lying” is crossed when the insinuation of something as serious as the accusation of treason is made in all seriousness when it is known to be a lark. And news channels shouldn’t be spinning any more than they should be lying. How important is it for the media to “NOT TELL LIES”? If they’ll lie straight to your face about these things then what makes you think they’re ever going to tell you the truth when it runs against their narrative? Why do they even have a “narrative” in the first place? It’s time to re-evaluate the way you think about “the news”. The National is not really news, it’s CBC’s opinions with some accompanying facts. Facts that don’t support their opinions won’t be covered at all, or they’ll get the barest of mentions along with some insinuations about their legitimacy and that’s it. Eg, Duffygate was 3 years of headline coverage. Trump-Russia collusion ditto. Both have no actual traction. IRSgate and FBIgate on the other hand are extremely serious topics with mounds of actual evidence and no news coverage.1 point

Nope, and that is exactly the point to be made. RBG now finds herself with the burden of carrying on to protect a liberal Supreme Court seat no matter how old she is. CNN films recently ran her biography complete with personal trainer and strength conditioning to keep her going. Pump that iron Ruth !! The Democrats already outsmarted themselves when they had a Senate majority for voting on nominations, something Trump will be able to exploit...again.1 point

I was fortunate enough to have respectable parents who taught me not to be too quick to judge at people....what more when there are those who specialize in law, who say the person (Kavanaugh in this case), isn't guilty of what he's being accused of. Thou shalt not bear false witness. I thank God for that. Btw, Bush-Chenney was referring to Ginsburg - who was expected to retire at the time of Obama (which would've been helpful to Obama as it would've given him the opportunity to appoint her replacement). Instead, pundits are anticipating her retirement could very likely happen while Trump is sitting president - she's now 85 years old. There is a difference between laughing at people and laughing at situations/circumstances. It's the situation the Dems find themselves in with Ginsburg that's funny. We haven't seen desperately desperate, yet. We might - if Ginsburg retires soon. Even God has a sense of humor. Why do you think God named Abraham's son, "Isaac?" It has to do with laughter. Because his mother laughed when God told them she'll bear a child with Abraham. She laughed at their situation - their age! Genesis 18 10 Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him. 11 Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” 13 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” 15 Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.” Poverbs 17:22 A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Genesis 21:6 And Sarah said, “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.” I thank God for............. humor. Do you think the Dems would want Ginsburg to retire any time soon? I don't think you do, either.1 point

The SD rose from 13% to 17.5%, which is good but nowhere near what was expected of them. The social democrats remain the largest party but two traditional blocs are equal in terms of seats. Therefore a total impasse. Could trigger new elections.1 point

Because Trump has never claimed to be otherwise, unlike Trudeau who plays the usual passive aggressive Canadian version of identity politics instead. Regardless, your "fandom" or disdain for American political leadership reflects the reality that Trudeau and Canada find today....dependence and influence by American culture and power. Most Americans don't know or care what brand of "fascism" exists in Canada (e.g. Crown corporations)....it just doesn't matter. Clinton and Obama started more wars for the U.S. than Trump has to date. Canada sold out for NAFTA...long before Trump became the latest U.S. president. Canada has a domestic challenge and international reputation for not being able to get big things done....it has more trade barriers between provinces than with the U.S. or Mexico. Pipelines don't get built....refineries don't get built....LNG terminals do not get built....ships do not get built. Sometimes, Canada is its own worst enemy, and blaming Trump will not change that.1 point

Tantrum noted, but the answer has been and will be more trade dependence on the USA. The "international community" has seen how things don't get done in Trudeau's Canada.1 point
-
You know as well as I do that the US is seeking to take unfair advantage of trading partners by using its power to make economic threats and instill fear in the smaller power. It must not be tolerated by the international community. To allow such behaviour, even by remaining silent, is nothing short of appeasement, and we all know how that worked out for Britain under Chamberlain. The answer to might is right pressure tactics must always be “Fuck off!”1 point
-
No, it is exactly what happened, now documented in Canadian news media. More will be forthcoming as the incompetence of the Sunshine Band on NAFTA is revealed. Canada is only 8% of North America's population and is very dependent on the U.S. export market (75%), just like the United Mexican States (79%)....the number that really matters. Canada and Mexico have an order of magnitude less trade with each other than with the United States. Predictably, Mexico chose its own national interests over partnering with a Canadian dead end.1 point

Just highlighting the problems: 1) Ok but you have no idea how many 'good' immigrants you will lose because they can't, say, bring their mother also. There's a baked-in assumption here that may be wrong. 2) Leaving money on the table. Why ? Makes no sense, as more wealth and investment is good for everyone. 3) Devil is in the details. We don't know why hiring companies throw people out, and the reasons are varied anyway. 4) I doubt you are basing this on numbers. How many Poles and Russians live in Toronto right now ? Also, how do you know what the potential supply of immigrants is from other areas ? 5) Detention camps ? Is that what it is ? Ok, but if the purpose of this plan is to help Canada, what is the value on spending billions on detention ? What is the problem you are trying to fix ? You spend money to save money, or because we can afford to spend money on something that has personal value to us.1 point

Glad that you admit even with your own link that it was indeed operation countenance as I had previously stated... What your link fails to show is that since the invasion Iran took a hostile approach towards the Third Reich and the Hitler was carrying on with the programme of extermination of jews... Your selective argument fails to show the dynamics of those relationships at WW2! Here is an excerpt from an article from the holocaust museum. Iranian Jews ruled by Reza Shah and later his son, Muhammad Reza Pahlavi, enjoyed many rights and freedoms that they had not previously experienced, including relative cultural and religious autonomy, increased economic opportunities, and significant political rights. Jews also benefitted from the Pahlavi tilt towards a more secular domestic policy. The Iranian government informed the Germans that it considered Iranian Jews to be fully assimilated Iranians And the article continues.... Reza Shah declared Iran neutral at the start of World War II. He feared both Soviet and British ambitions in his country and despite the benefits of economic relations with Germany, he considered Germany to be too committed to its program of race-based expansion and ideology. https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/iran-during-world-war-ii1 point

Culture is the shared values, history and experiences of a people who grew up together and who, by and large, shared so many, many cultural touchstones of childhood, youth, adolescence, of growing up here, of what we all experienced together or separately. What it felt like, what we did and thought and learned and were taught growing up in Canada. And no, it wasn't all identical, but anyone who grew up in Canada would recognize so many things that they had shared with others who had grown up, even a thousand miles away. It all produces a similar mentality, a similar sentimentality, and common customs and values and beliefs. No unanimity, of course, but a basic, core centre you'd find the great majority of people agreeing with.1 point

Yeah I hope we don’t do a deal with these cheats. Keep crap American dairy and produce out of Canada and protect our resources. I think Canada should counter in negotiations with a 20 year sunset clause, expansion of supply management to all agriculture, a stronger dispute resolution process, Canada first priority for our resources, additional cultural protections, you get the idea. Throw gender equality requirements in there to really piss off the neocons. Make this so unpalatable that the US doesn’t sign on. Let Trump proceed with his irresponsible tariffs, so that we can do counter tariffs and redirect trade away from the US. Screw ‘em.1 point
