To this date the member of Parliament who introduced the bill doesn' define what Islamophobia is but gets down right rude and arrogant having to even consider defining it. Its still not defined and yet its specifically mentioned in her bill. Well we had the usual assortment of trendy leftists come to this law's defence. This is the same Justin Trudeau who of all the Mosques to choose to visit in Canada and who claims to be personal friends with the Aga Kahn the spiritual leader of Ismaili Muslims didn't choose one of their mosques or to visit an Amidyyah Mosque consisting of Muslims who escaped Muslim extremism and openly denounce terrorism. No not Trudeau of all the mosques to chose he went to the Al Rashid mosque in Calgary run by openly anti semitic Imams including Imam Al Rashid who went back to Egypt to head the Muslim Brotherhood’s administrative office, and was arrested for inciting violence against Coptic Christians. I have been to speeches where he has incited open hatred against Israel and anyone Jewish or not who supports Israel. Then again this is a Prime Minister who not so long ago issued a Holocaust Remembrance Day statement but did not think he needed to make any mention of Jewish suffering in the Holocaust. He's quick to encourage an MP to call out Islamophobia without defining Islamophobia but zero mention of bigoted Muslims. So? How do I criticize such Muslims without Trudeau and this MP calling me irrational and Islamophobic? I bring all the above up because the day after yet another terrorist attack by someone in the name of extreme Muslim terrorist beliefs and we have a Liberal government so quick to point out it stands by the UK when it does not. The current regime will not acknowledge Muslim extremism exists and now does what? It passes a bill that makes it possible to threaten and intimidate people for speaking out against Muslim extremism and its not just a slap against non Muslims, its a slap in the face of moderate Muslims Muslims who fled to this country to get away from the very Islamic beliefs Trudeau is courting and pandering to. Make no mistake Aleghbra's agenda is to advance what he believes is a specific agenda for MUSLIM Canadians and only MUSLIM Canadians who subscribe to his specific views. This MP is not inclusive nor is the MP who initiated the bill. They aren't interested in moderate Muslims in fact they are protecting the very Muslims in Canada trying o bully and intimidate moderate Muslims for not being fundamentalist and anti Western enough. In my day going to school meant learning how to read, write, and do arithmetic, learn about the history of Canada, and geography. Today, it seems to be more about teaching children all about the environment, gay/transgender rights, multiculturalism, sex education, and the joys diversity. They are taught that Canadian traditions and cultures are not all that important anymore but the cultures, traditions and heritage of others is. The education of today is a joke. As an example the Ontario liberal party has decided that there should not be any reference to calling people a mom or dad but just be called partners. I guess the reason for that is that gay couples won't be introduced as dad and dad or mom and mom anymore, and there by hide the fact that some kids may have two partners of the same sex. The poor kids of today are being so brainwashed with liberal brainless propaganda bull like what I mentioned above that it is a wonder that more parents don't take their children out of public schools. They are institutions for liberalism foolishness.

Not really sure what you're claiming is a "myth". Are you honestly suggesting that no U.S. servicemen died or were at risk once Japan was effectively blockaded? That the 2 ships I mentioned weren't actually sunk? Or that people in China and other occupied countries were not dying due to Japanese actions in the summer of 1945?

Sounds like a pretty big risk to me.

First of all, I'm not sure if you know what a blockade is, but its not like some sort of spell in Harry Potter where you just wave a magic wand an an invisible barrier appears. Blockades require resources... ships, planes, and soldiers. (Soldiers whom would be 'at risk' during a continued blockade; even if Japan's military strength was diminished it still had planes, subs, etc. which would still be a threat to American forces.) And as others have pointed out, despite Japan being 'blockaded', they still had a significant number of forces in places like China, where innocent people were being killed. (Then there is the issue of the Japanese themselves, many of whom would starve or die should the blockade progress.) So perhaps the U.S. could have just maintained a blockade indefinitely until the Japanese eventually did give up/starve to death (I don't think anyone doubts that), but the problem is that option would have caused more lives than it saved. As for the opinions of "military leaders' opposing the use of atomic weapons... They are certainly entitled to their opinions, but they are just that: opinions. There are also military leaders and historians who think it was the correct thing to do. Ah yes, the myth of the imminent Japanese surrender. The fact is, while there may have been a few Japanese politicians willing to surrender, they did not hold significant power within Japan (at least not enough to actually get Japan to surrender). Japan lost at Midway. They could have surrendered then, but didn't. Japan lost Okinawa, but still didn't surrender. Japanese cities were regularly subjected to bombing, but still they did not surrender. It took 2 atomic bombs, and even then those in charge were deadlocked about continuing the war. It wasn't until the emperor stepped in and said "Dude, are you nuts? They wiped out entire cities with a single bomb. I think its time to give up." And even then there were some in the military who wanted to continue the war (even attempting ta coup.) This was not the sign of a country that was planning on surrendering quickly. Ah yes, another myth... that if the U.S. just promised to keep the emperor around then the Japanese would have surrendered. Ok, as has been mentioned before, Japan wasn't a monolithic society, and not everyone was willing to surrender regardless of what would happen to the emperor. And even many of those who wanted to surrender wanted more than just the emperor left alone... they wanted all of the Japanese military and political system left in tact. So, the nitwits who started the war would have still been around and in charge. The U.S. wisely looked at that option, decided they didn't want to have a replay of the war a few decades later, and decided that no, you can't just leave the same political system in place. Prior to Japan's surrender, they had troops stationed in China, Thailand, Laos, and a host of other countries. So Japan certainly wasn't as 'isolated' as you seem to think. It may have not had enough, but that's different than not being able to 'import/export anything'.

Fair question. Depending on what you read literacy rates vary from 40-60 to higher percentages. It depends on what countries you look at It depends on what gender you look at, and what age group y ou look at. Also it depends what you mean by literacy. It you define literacy as basic reading and writing, its higher. If you define literacy as at a level to argue in writing and read nuances its far far lower No one specifically has examined the level of literacy to be able to understand Koran passages. Please do not confuse basic reading and writing with being literate to read the Koran. The majority of Muslims go to madrassas and learn the Koran in "Arabic", a language they don't necessarily understand. A local Imam teaches tem very basic Arabic, not sufficient to be able to read the Koran on their own and be fluent in it.. Further complicating matters is that not all Muslims speak Arabic. Even then, Arabic speakers do not necessarily speak the language of the Quran. It also has to be remembered that WRITTEN Arabic contains a very large amount of vocabulary and a more complex grammar than any of the oral or spoken dialects of Arabic that are actually spoken and limited to the Middle East. Next, ne-quarter of the world's population in Muslim which means many do not speak let alone write Arabic so arfe not literate in the Koran. So the question is how many Muslims can read classic Arabic and therefore be literate to read the Koran. Unfortunately the literacy rates don't address that but common sense tells you that less than 21% of Muslims are Imams. Thus the use of the term 80%. In fact I could have been much more accurate and said 20% of the Muslim world are not Imams, just 5%. However I am assuming a classic Arab literacy rate higher than it probably is. The fact is most Muslims can not read the Quran for one simple reason, and that is because the Quran is very difficult to understand. it is written in the language of Kouriash, which was the ancient language of the Arabs in Arabia and so many if not most of its words are very hard to understand unless you use dictionaries. This is why Imams say the majority of Muslims can not read and understand the Koran. The actual fundamental literacy rate in Muslim countries for arguments sake is somewhere between 40 to 50% of Muslims who can not read or write at all. Of the 50-60% who could read or write at a basic level its usually 20% who go on to universities and so I use the term 80% illiteracy rate to be able to read the Koran. I generaously assume the 20% who go to university could push come to shove use a dictionary of ancient Kouriash with their modern Arabic to try read the Korean but only Imams actually study it from cover to cover and there are no statistics on how many Imams are fully fluent or functional in reading Kouriash. Now before I answer these question even further, there is a very good reason why even people who think they can understand the Koran do not: a-the chapters are not in chronological order, i.e., the order in which they were "revealed"-there's 114 suras (chapters) in order from longest to shortest-that in itself means they are not flowing in sequence of the actual thoughts that developed them; b-each sura contains many subjects or issues that are unrelated and don't connect so necessarily the stories are disjointed, i.e., jump around without cohesion and logical flow; c-the Koran in fact has a sequence where Muhammad goes from distrusting non Muslims to out and out hating them-it progresses but because of a and b you have to look for it; d-then as I have mentioned to someone who came on this forum to preach the Koran and claims to be a young Turkish girl that she has no clue as to the principle of abrogation which means, many passages written after others written before the are said to over-ride the earlier passages but because the suras are not placedin chronological order trying to figure out what over-rides what is very very difficult-according to Muslims scholars only 43 suras are not over-ridden or contradicted and made obsolete by other suras; e-you can't read let alone understand the Koran without first reading both the SIRA and HADITH which are stories about the life of Mohammed and then relate back to suras that are not contradicted by other suras to referencing them back to his life stories to get their actual meaning; f-according to the Koran, you either live in the realm or place of Islam (the right life and way of doing things) or you live in a state of war (all non Muslims) and all non Muslims are viewed inherently and necessarily as the enemy until they convert to Islam-so even if a non Muslim thinks they have read a translation of the Koran in English they can not be said to understand it until they first convert; g-the Koran is designed NOT TO BE UNDERSTOOD by the average Muslim-ordinary Muslims are only supposed to lear on a need-to-know basis which means unless you are an Imam or Mullah you are not supposed to know or be able to know the actual true meanings even if you could read ancient Arabic. Doesn't anyone think that this London-attack has been a bit blown out of proportion? These extreme views by some people on this forum is an insight into how extremist nationalists can become trigger people. Take the Quebec mosque shooter for example, or the guy in the States who shot at two Indians at a bar, thinking they were Iranian, or the brother and sister who were killed by a guy who didn't like Muslims. I think it's important for the government to monitor not only Muslim extremists, but also other people with extremist views. You never know if/when they will go over the edge and get their hands on a gun.

What is "necessary"? Do you know that regardless of possible American or Japanese casualties in any possible invasion, that with each day that passed, thousands of innocent people in China and elsewhere were murdered, raped, tortured, and subjected to twisted medical experiments by the Japanese Army? Against an adversary like Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan in WWII, absolutely any means are completely justified to achieve the soonest, most complete, and most assured victory possible. Neither Germany nor Japan would have hesitated an instant before using nukes on the US, Russia, or any of the allied powers. People think about the morality of war in terms of the wars of today... which are essentially optional wars, police actions, addressing minor (almost non-existent) threats. In such wars, yeah, avoid civilian casualties when possible. Or better yet, don't get into optional wars to begin with. But WWII was not such a war, it was an existential struggle, it was total war as the world has never seen since and with any luck will never see again. Past a certain point, there can be no hesitation to use any means available. If there had been nukes before Germany had surrendered, it would have been entirely justified to have used them there, too. To not use every means possible to bring about the swiftest and most complete end to the war would have been a betrayal of every single person that died at the hands of Germany and Japan, and every single person who sacrificed their lives in fighting them.

That's just fine. Different countries have different defense needs. Setting defense spending as a % of GDP is stupid anyways. Our nation does not cost more to defend just because we produce more widgets. Some of these other countries exist in hostile regions, and have multiple international borders with potential adversaries. There may be valid reasons for us to increase defense spending but meeting NATO guidelines is not one of them.

I happen to agree with you that both Judaism and Christianity, for the most part, have evolved to a point of critical thinking where I would hope we do not literally take every word of the Bible verbatum and use it as a moral guide and historical record. I do think there remain very fundamentalist Christians and Jews, often referred to as "Orthodox" but what is the likelihood of them being terrorist today? You just don't see Amish, or Orthodox Hasidic Jews attacking people on terror cells. . Evangelical clergy still exist full of fire and piss and vinegar against Jews, Catholics, etc., but for the most part we Jews and Christians have found peace and in modern democracies Christian leaders whether it be the Pope, Queen of England, etc., embrace in inter-religious faith services and cooperation. We can't say that about mainstream Islam at this point. Unfortunately its stlll not at the stage where people have developed critical skills to question its clergy. That is because 80% of Muslims remain unable to read and therefore are dependent on Imams. Those Imams are not subject to one central, uniform education system. Imams are often self-educated. Unfortunately Islam is where Christianity was 500 years ago if not further back. Its full of feuding sects that hate each other as much as they do non Muslims and the Koran is still very much used as a weapon. That said the reformist movement in Islam, the peaceful moderates who are emerging no different than with Christians and before them Jews are coming. We need to find a way to reach out to them and make alliances. To me the greatest weapon against terrorism is getting moderate Muslims out to meet with Jews, Christians, Hindus, etc., and practice inter-faith tolerance. Until we do that, this terrorism and the use of the Koran to promulgate it will continue. Humans tend to take their faiths and turn them into reasons to act like the apes we are bashing each other over the head with sticks. Its a travesty we don't use these books as codes to find peace but instead use them as weapons to justify war. I am generalizing. I don't know what or how each of these individuals can justify killing innocent people.
