Michael Hardner Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 WIVB Buffalo ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Same-sex marriage is now legal in New York after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that was narrowly passed by state lawmakers Friday, handing activists a breakthrough victory in the state where the gay rights movement was born.New York becomes the sixth state where gay couples can wed and the biggest by far. A watershed moment here. I think it will be interesting to see what pushback, if any, comes of this. Where is the new neutral position for a politician ? Is it "I'm personally against it, but the courts have to follow process" ? Quote Click to learn why Climate Change is caused by HUMANS Michael Hardner

I frankly think that in Canada we should have done the same as American states are now doing and left each province to legislate this question in their own way. IMHO, the Canadian Supreme Court erred in extending its interpretation of the Charter in this way. Edited June 25, 2011 by August1991 Quote

Nah...New York is not a big deal because it should have already happened there. What took it so long? I'm glad to see the way this is going in any case. It's just not a priority amoung people anymore. Especially these days. Quote

ToadBrother Posted June 25, 2011 Report Posted June 25, 2011 (edited) No...it will be a "big deal" when Texas "changes". I'm more wondering what happens when a gay NY couple moves to Texas... Is there are 21st century version of Dredd Scott on the way? Perhaps you're going to have gay states and straight states, and it will boil over into civil war, but the new Abraham Lincoln will have a sense of fashion and a love for showtunes. jbg Posted June 26, 2011 Report Posted June 26, 2011 New York state, Auguste. It's a bigger deal. What I cannot fathom, for the life of me, is the relationship that the left sees between gay pride and core issues. The problem is that the everyday voter is motivated by his or her bread-and-butter concerns. I am very upset, for example, that the New York legislature, when the financial and employment situation here is dreadful, just wasted months on legalizing gay marriage. Only a small fraction of gays want to marry. This is not the same as their having equal employment rights. Quote Free speech: "You can say what you want, but I don't have to lend you my megaphone." Always remember that when you are in the right you can afford to keep your temper, and when you are in the wrong you cannot afford to lose it. - J.J. Reynolds. Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? The mantra of "world opinion" or the views of the "international community" betrays flabby and weak reasoning (link).

Only a small fraction of gays want to marry. This is not the same as their having equal employment rights. Sometimes the best thing a government can do for an economy is to ignore it. Although I doubt very much that any kind of ignoring has gone on. Of course, the cause of the economy being so poor in the first place is due to idiots on Wall Street (not to mention Greenspan et al in the Fed). But no, let's blame those politicians who are too busy trying to provide equal rights for some "faggots" (I'm sure that's the word you would prefer). Typical knee-jerk response, throw around some slurs and claim it's coming from the other side. jbg, good point, I hope that New Yorkers vote with their pocket books in 2012. The economy will be a lot worse by then. Quote

The problem is that the everyday voter is motivated by his or her bread-and-butter concerns. The cynical view might be that Republicans can't count on making advances with this issue, so they've thrown their ostensible principles away on the excuse that the economy is 'priority'. I am very upset, for example, that the New York legislature, when the financial and employment situation here is dreadful, just wasted months on legalizing gay marriage. Only a small fraction of gays want to marry. This is not the same as their having equal employment rights. Again, there are plenty of examples of people 'wasting time' on useless legislation - even this issue - thanks to Republicans as well as Democrats. bloodyminded Posted June 26, 2011 Report Posted June 26, 2011 And if the economy never improves to some sufficient level--a level to remain unstated, so a forever malleable benchmark--no rights issues should ever be resolved. Shady Posted June 26, 2011 Report Posted June 26, 2011 I think the most significant aspect of the issue is that it was passed through the legislature. The way it should be. And not forced down on people by unelected judges, writing their own law. Quote
