"We have a president who does not believe in truth. This is far different from anything we have experienced." - Carl Bernstein

Journalist Carl Bernstein said this in 2018, referring to then-President Donald Trump. Bernstein, who gained fame for his reporting on the Watergate scandal, has repeatedly contrasted Trump's approach to the truth with that of previous presidents, including Richard Nixon.

Context of the statement
  • Trump's use of untruths: In a 2018 interview with CNN, Bernstein explained his viewpoint: "We have had presidents in the past who have lied... But what we have never had is a president of the United States who uses lying and untruth as a basic method to promote his policies, his beliefs, and his way of approaching the American people and engaging with the world".
  • "Worse than Watergate": Bernstein has said that the Trump presidency was "worse than Watergate" because in the 1970s, the political system worked to hold President Nixon accountable, and there were Republicans who demanded transparency. In contrast, Bernstein argued, many Republicans in Congress later undermined legitimate investigations into Trump's actions.
  • "The enemy of the people": The quote also related to Trump's frequent attacks on the media, which he often labeled "the enemy of the people." Bernstein and others viewed this rhetoric as an assault on the First Amendment and a dangerous act of an authoritarian leader.
  • War on truth: Bernstein has described this behavior as part of a broader "war on truth" in which "forces that believe in untruth are gaining ground". He believes this cultural shift extends beyond Trump but finds its "paramount figure" in him.

Man, you might as well be describing Obama and the Democrats when they shoved Obamacare down our throats.

What a load of crap

Obama literally instructed is intelligence apparatus to lie and fake a connection to Russia with trump that didn't exist for political purposes.

It was the very definition of using lying and untruths to promote his position

Sounds like Carl Bernstein is not above a little line to promote his position either

"That which doesn't kill me...

Had better start running."

The problem with Bernstein is that his opinions are very selective and biased.  He mostly writes on issues that cater to his liberal readership so he can remain somewhat relevant. If he truly cared about truth, decency, and writing about facts, then he would have been writing the same thing about Biden's 48 years of lies.

His book on Hillary was a joke.  He could have saved himself the hassle of writing the entire 640 pages of "blah blah blah" by just saying what everybody already knew.................  that Hillary was more than happy to put up with Bill's sexual escapades so as long as she could get a run at the Senate.

No, nobody in the history of politics has been anything like Trump. Ever.

All politicians have a set of constituents who disagree on perspective and policy. All politicians have been wrong sometimes, some frequently. Most of them have told lies occasionally, and a few frequently.

But we have never had a pathological liar in office. Constantly, incessantly, as reflexively as breathing. From day one. About policy. About politics. About people. About big things. About small things. About everything.

And we've never had that kind of politician before because people used to have the self respect not to trust--and certainly not to follow--a person of such low character.

But whatever generational shift has happened, modern "conservatives" will stand there in the rain, and Trump will look them in the eye and tell them it's not raining, and they'll just swallow what's left of their dignity and nod along. No self respect. Apparently that's the price of "owning the libs." Well, that and American democracy. Hope it was worth it.

Not even remotely close.

And no, I do not feel better. I derive no joy or comfort from contemplating advancing decay of our crumbling democracy.

Our first president refused a kingship and retired to keep democracy healthy. That ideal is so, so far away at this point that it might as well be another country entirely. We just re-elected a the first president in history who fomented insurrection, who literally tried to overthrow democracy with a slate of fake electors. A man who wasn't just ambivalent to the will of the people, but who would disenfranchise the entire country to retain power. And you voted for it. Incomprehensible.

The problem with ^these OPINIONS is that they are very selective and biased, with ZERO ACTUAL EVIDENCE to support them.

Yep and they are LYING because they have NO WAY of KNOWING that "Trump didn't receive or send any messages" other than the commonly known tendency of Trump to not use email. AKA almost ONLY tweets/"truths"

"Not accused" is NOT "exoneration." Duh

It is ONLY the safe way of saying "we don't KNOW of any evidence."

Carl Bernstein rode in on the talent of Bob Woodward. On his own, he's nothing but a hack.

Too bad your ^OPINIONS mean NOTHING. Maybe try citing people who are fully familiar with what happened.

In the series of stories that followed, Bernstein and Woodward eventually connected the burglars to a massive slush fund and a corrupt attorney general. Bernstein was the first to suspect that President Nixon was involved, and he found a laundered check that linked Nixon to the burglary.

There is a LOT of circumstantial and CHARACTER evidence.

Like Trump's DESPERATION to prevent the EVIDENCE from being disseminated.

He OBVIOUSLY believes it is DAMNING and has FOOLED YOU.

This is your conjecture. This is not evidence.

You're stuck on Trump.  I don't like Trump either but to say that he's the biggest liar is a stretch.  Ever watched any stump speeches from early Biden, or Bill Clinton?  The difference between Trump and another other liar like Clinton, is that Clinton never had to worry over alternative media outlets exposing his lies within minutes, and the same goes for Joe Biden until the later years.

In your analogy, a man can robbing a small bank isn't quite as bad as a man robbing a large bank.

So when Republicans said Obamacare would force Americans to go before “death panels” who would decide whether they were worthy of receiving life-saving treatment that was the truth?  Remember the Republican claims of death panels?

Obamacare might not have been able to achieve all of its initial promises thanks to resistance from Republicans and industry but it wasn’t the absurd lying we see from republicans.

Tellingly it’s actually Republicans who want “death panels” for women in need of lifesaving abortions, but I digress….
