That would explain the low hanging fruit / showboat feel to it. If this results in other manufacturers thinking twice before setting up shop in America then good. I doubt the technicians they employ will be thrilled with the possibility they'll being detained and shackled by ICE while doing their jobs.

Knowing too the way South Koreans like shaming their betters I expect Hyundai's corporate heads will be hanging following this. Look how Ford is reacting to Crown Royal.

From what I've read the attorneys insist that contractors had papers. And 300 are being let go.

Hence the showboat sense I felt about it. I recall when a number of South Korean technicians came to install machinery and then oversee surimi lines in local fish plants years ago.

It was mostly a flash in the pan in the end. What little fish is left is just frozen whole, mostly at sea and shipped to Korea when it's landed. It's temporary work that makes full time work unfeasible hence the corporate/economic argument for bringing in TFW's.

Perhaps Canadians would be happier if Ottawa just let South Korean factory boats fish in our waters out of sight out of mind, then we wouldn't need to bring in TFW's.

That's how it was before things like Economic Exclusion Zones. Almost sounds woke, except for the exclusion part I guess.

My point is that it was hard to figure out what was going on. For example, the title of the thread would lead one to believe that the factory was operational. I thought that too when I heard the initial report. 

If you travel to the US for professional work, as I have, there are various visas that you are supposed to get.  When you were asked at the border why you or visiting the US... Business or pleasure.... You say business.  Then you explain generally what you're doing. 

If you have a Visa they tend to let you pass. At least they used to. But what you do when you get there can be a little fuzzy according to what the Visa is.  

You're doing training? Are you allowed to operate the machine training on? 

Generally, nobody checks. But if there is an ICE then that's a different thing. 

But I also don't think this is going to have an impact on the onshoring process for this factory or generally. 

After all, Hyundai is doing exactly what the US government wants them to do.

1. I'm sure it would be easy to cite sources, including the White House Press, that frames the story differently.  The point is: we don't have to do that on here.  We can go to primary sources, as well as the aforementioned sources and piece together something that makes more sense.
