Most Trump tariffs are not legal, U.S. appeals court rules

NEW YORK - A U.S. appeals court ruled on Friday that most of Donald Trump’s tariffs are illegal, undercutting the Republican president’s use of the levies as a key international economic policy tool.

Trump has made tariffs a pillar of U.S. foreign policy in his second term, using them to exert political pressure and renegotiate trade deals with countries that export goods to the United States.

The tariffs have given the Trump administration leverage to extract economic concessions from trading partners but have also increased volatility in financial markets.

“The statute bestows significant authority on the President to undertake a number of actions in response to a declared national emergency, but none of these actions explicitly include the power to impose tariffs, duties, or the like, or the power to tax,” the court said.

The decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., addressed the legality of what Trump calls “reciprocal” tariffs imposed as part of his trade war in April, as well as a separate set of tariffs imposed in February against China, Canada and Mexico.

Was the ruling stayed until review by the SCOTUS?

If not, should be a good day on the stock market tomorrow.

Tomorrow is Saturday. The tariffs are left in place because the SCOTUS will likely rule in his favor.

Don't you think that if I were wrong that I would know it?

'left in place because'.... that sounds like your lower courts know your Supreme Court is bias and will rule in Trump's favour.  Is that why you think likely rule in his favour, or because of the legality of them?

Legality. All the tariffs are temporary and are only made permanent when trade deals are signed and ratified by congress. They have no case and they know it.

They must have something if 2 courts have now ruled they're invalid.  A president can only apply tariffs in event of national emergency which he claims is illegal immigration and flow of drugs from oversees.  Seems like a stretch to me and a real stretch applying tariffs to every country in the world.

It appears to be stayed at the snap of The Orange Overlord's fingers.
He's already moaning about the biased liberal Judge that ruled the Constitution says that's the job of Congress. How dare he stand up to King Shit, who does he think he is?

Roberts’ Supreme Court has backed Trump’s authoritarian moves on multiple occasions. Unfortunately for America and the world we may see more of the same from it on this matter. Let’s hope for the best.

The will stay asleep because they are so scared of Trump to be woken up.

Trump just fire a boat and killed many persons and it is forbidden to kill people in US than the police must arrest him to be judged and be put in prison. You can't take justice into your own hand and the people he killed was probably just tourists travalling between ilands. He is mentally a kid who doesn't know what he is doing.

Fascists hate straight white males. It's why they tried to derail Trump's presidential campaign. The man is lucky he wasn't murdered.
