She has said she would do one debate.  THat's it. 

She knows she loses if she starts to appear to the public without a teleprompter.  Which is true. 

She can't not have at least one so she'll risk it and mitigate any damage if it doesn't go well, but she's probably thinking she'll do well enough to get past it and then can go back to teleprompter rallies.

I'm not sure they do.  I believe this is more about addressing their own insecurities and mental health issues by trying to assert dominance over others who don't agree with them. IT's the age old favorite of the coward and bully - "I don't really like me so i'll be mad at someone else and hurt them to show how i'm the boss".
