His mass-printing of money led to massive inflation.

Second, the vast majority of the population of Ukraine had no interest in joining NATO in 2009-10. Ironically, it was the Russian occupation of Crimea, and the Russian hostilities in Eastern Ukraine that made Ukrainians change their mind. Today, the majority of Ukrainians want to join NATO, thanks to Putin's actions.

However, those two countires also went from minimal support for joining NATO before the Ukraine invasion. to essentially demanding their respective countires join NATO, despite Russian "threats"...and this is exactly what has happened.
