The Liberal government is looking to cut almost $1 billion from the annual budget of the Department of National Defence (DND) — a demand the country's top military commander says is prompting some "difficult" conversations within the military.

Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Wayne Eyre and Deputy Minister of Defence Bill Matthews testified before the House of Commons defence committee late Thursday, where they acknowledged in more detail the ramifications of the federal government's spending reduction plan.

Earlier this month, Eyre and Matthews released a joint internal statement warning that the department would be expected to contribute to the federal government's overall plan to reduce spending.

"There's no way that you can take almost a billion dollars out of the defence budget and not have an impact," Eyre told the four-party committee. "This is something that we're wrestling with now."

And as we all know the defense department is over funded at the moment so with world tensions up this is probably a good idea, right?

Like - what's left to cut?They don't buy new gear, they've given away alll our tanks and new APV's, we're still flying 40 year old planes..  are they going to just stop feeding the troops or something?

I don't actually get why Canada should have that big of an Army.

We don't have many enemies and a military invasion against Canada is... unlikely. Not only that, but the most probable invader would be the US, and we wouldn't stand a chance to defend ourselves against them.

we have a lot of enemies.  China, russia we've had tiffs with a dozen others and the ONLY reason it's 'unlikeky'l we'll get invaded is because of nato.

And we're at risk of losing that if we continue to under spend.

Russia alone has pushed it's claim on our sovereignty in the north and sent subs into our waters etc.  Did you forget we share a sea border with them?

Yet, the only thing we do is kill Arabs and intervene in poor countries through black ops. Our military is not used for defensive purposes right now by our leaders.

China and Russia won't invade Canada, this is preposterous. We have virtually no enemy at our borders. If you consider Russian submarines threatening to our sovereignty, it is a very mild threat to be frank, and a full scale invasion would be deterred by the US.

So you're saying we don't intercept russian planes regularly? You're saying we don't patrol our own oceans? How interesting,

And you're saying going after the taliban and al queda wasn't protecting canada? You know - the guys behind  9/11 - the attack that haopened on north american soil?

Do you know what our military does for this nation every hour of every day....I'm not sure you do, and if not how can you make a informed decision on what we do need or Don't need...

The US is not our enemy, it is the only nation seemed to be concerned with our defense... Thinking that an actual invasion is our only threat shows that you don't understand what our security apparatus does everyday for you and me...

What would you call our troops in Latvia are doing...

You are aware we have signed on to defensive treaties, i know Canadians seem to think they are worthless, and we don't really pay them much attention anyways... then we sit back and wonder why our inter national reputation is the worst it has been in decades...

Yes everything is going to be deterred by the US, until one day they get tired of our selfish acts, our pure laziness our greed, and demand payment for that service, or take our sovereignty away from us....if we are talking about being frank...we have no excuse not to be able to protect ourselves or do our part in the defense of north America...and yet we have thrown our hands up and said, ya we give up...we want to be part of the gang, we continue to sign defensive pacts including the latest one were they have in silence let us go, with a huge rubber stamp on our foreheads that reads "Unreliable" ....The world does not need Canada, we barely contribute to anything....Canada needs the world...we have become nothing more than a tick on the worlds ass.

Our enemies are stronger now than at any time since the end of the Cold War.  You have to at least have the capacity to defend your own borders.
