Why do you think it was the Republicans who originally attacked him and why they continue to attack? Because he had classified documents and failed to give them up quick enough? Trump represents a serious threat to the run-of-the-mill political elite. They must destroy him or chance losing their various gravy trains. Its yet to be determined if they can keep him off the ballots, or bruise him enough that he can't win a general election. As of today, his support in the Republican primary is at 45%. I think that's slightly lower than it has been.

I know what your theory is, but it’s not part of the law.  At any rate, the ruling is done and the odds of a successful appeal are very poor. Trump waived his right to a jury trial in this case, and the judge saw prima facie evidence of fraud before the trial even began.  
 

It’s surprising to me that Trump couldn’t even describe any means of validating his properties.  There are well-established means, such as comparing the property to recently sold comp properties.  
 

Let me give you one example: Mar-a-Lago.  The Palm Beach tax assessor stated that Mar-a-Lago was worth $26 million. Trump appealed this, explaining that the property was encumbered by certain deed restrictions which reduced its value. The assessor then ruled a value of I believe $18 million. So the judge in New York simply repeats this, and the Trump family loudly complains that their property is worth $1 billion! 

You tell me: Is Mar-a-Lago worth $18 million or $1 billion? Trump has said both, but it must be one or the other.  
 

He also stated on many disclosure documents that the square footage of his Trump Tower penthouse was 30,000 square feet, when it was under 11,000 square feet.  That’s a 300% discrepancy.

It’s a good question. I don’t know whether lenders routinely rely upon tax assessments in order to determine the value of a piece of property. 
 

For that matter, when I’ve bought or refinanced property in the United States, the lenders have required me to pay a professional of their choice to perform an assessment of the property’s value. I don’t know how it works with larger transactions; do you?  
 

I think that, whether the banks perform their own evaluations or not, they ask on the application forms for statements of square footage and value.  And the judge said there are margins in these estimations, but not on the order of 300% in square footage and jumping $18 million to $1 billion in value.
